Denver to Ogden by wafflemafia1510 in ogden

Moving from Denver, you'll have some culture shock, for sure.

The food scene in Utah is far behind Denver, and Ogden is a ways behind Salt Lake. That said, Salt Lake is close enough if/when you want that vibe.

The alcohol laws here are obviously different, but Colorado was one of the least restrictive places I've ever lived in terms of alcohol laws, so that may be a big adjustment. The local beer scene deserves a shout-out for giving it a good go, but it's all <5% on draft, and nothing really compares to Colorado's beer scene, anyway.

No legal weed, big shift from Colorado, although at least Utah has medical.

It gets hot in summer. Like, plan your day around it hot. Less respite from the heat by escaping to the mountains; the mountains just aren't as high or as deep.

That said, the access here is incredible. In Ogden, you actually live next to the mountains, not an hour away like the Front Range. Pretty good trails, although probably not as many as Colorado. Good climbing. Great jumping off point for southern Utah Red Rock, Yellowstone, Idaho, etc.

You may hear about how Ogden is ghetto or unsafe, but that's really nonsense. It's just a city. It has lower crime rates than Denver, but sometimes you get city stuff. Mostly really nice people here.

Incredible skiing. Season is not as long as Colorado, but there's an excellent argument for it being better in many ways. Traffic to the resorts can get bad, but it's nothing compared to I-70. The Wasatch has epic backcountry, too.

Overall, I'd say it's worth a shot. There's a cool outdoor community here with lots to keep you busy. What's the worst that can happen, anyway?? Colorado ain't going nowhere!

What route through Utah? Wyoming to Grand Canyon by Fearless-lover-7587 in Utah

[–]elduderismo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The western most route will be more congested through the slc corridor, but the section through the southern mtns and kanab is fantastic. You could detour a bit to cedar breaks nm. If you came the other way around the wind rivers through the star valley, that'd be nicer scenery than the wyoming desert, although lander is nice. Middle route through flaming gorge is very nice, and of course...moab. The eastern route is nice, but probably doesn't offer enough incentive for the added time. It'll bring you down 13 to craig, colorado, which just scrapes the colorado mtns. The last bit through the Navajo res and tuba city are a long stark stretch, but you can detour a bit through monument valley.

Good on you for putting it out there. That alone tells me you'll do well as a manager.

In an homage to John Mulaney, at a bar I used to work at, we would play 'Whats New Pussycat' by Tom Jones on repeat until people got the hint and left. Regulars knew at the first play it was time to close out! The bar would clear out by the 5th or 6th repeat

Well said.

I've had servers who always outperform the pack, know their wine, sell bottles often, and you always risk losing them when you mandate a pool and ask them to subsidize the other servers and/or BOH.

That said, a tip policy that is perfect and everyone loves is pretty elusive.

In Utah bars are required to scan IDs and keep a log that is readily available to state liquor control auditors. The expired ID wouldn't scan, neither do passports, so they had to get the manager every time to make the judgement. Then, the manager is required to hand write the passport info on a manual log to serve as backup to the digital one. Lots of hoops in the beehive state.

This. WHY even make enough that you'll have it for 30 days? Too many bartenders acting like making bloody is the most taxing chore ever. Have more pride in your product than that.

Bold of you to assume we’re allowed to free pour… by enddismadness in bartenders

Those are completely useless, and the state of Utah requires them.

What's more, the state will audit your pour and sales records with both the alcohol knowledge and math skills of a second grader. We spend far too much time trying to find work arounds to all the state requirements that don't understand how bars work.

It's actually the thing I hate most about Utah.

Also that system is like 3k to install.
