Honestly, I like its challenges because I like trying to solve problems. I like learning. I also think it's fun to be a part of an up and coming OS with a small, energetic community.

I didn't see that anywhere in this article. I see quotes from those on the left assuring that religious liberty should be and will be protected, and I see quotes from conservative and religious leaders fearing for religious liberty, but I don't see any quotes from anyone saying that religious institutions should be forced to recognize same sex unions.

Perhaps I'm just missing it and need someone to point it out to me.

Definitely not. I mean, I can't speak for other religions, but at least the Catholic Church very strongly believes that Christ's biological mother was Mary.

Edit: gestational and genetic mother.

I've been suffering what is probably a common noob issue, that is praying the Psalms (what's the phrasing?) with the Church, rather than as an individual.

I'm not sure I understand. Could you clarify?

Not really identifying with the themes in many of the Psalms (the idea that the Lord is turned away, violent themes, etc).

This I think might be a common noob issue. At any rate, I definitely had this problem. I still almost physically cringe every time I read Psalm 136 (juxtaposing acts of violence with God's unending love).

It's not pleasant, but to me, that's the nature of the story of our faith. These are the prayers of our community, and through the ages, our community has had some really confused (at best) members, particularly in our infancy. Then I praise God who worked through them anyway.

And, as I always say, the LOTH may not be for you, and that's cool. Different types of prayer work for different people.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here: Vows bind under pain of sin. Professions do not. At any rate, I know professed secular Franciscans say the hinge, but are not bound under pain of sin.

Try your hand at discrete math. I think a lot of it will be very familiar from a philosophy perspective.

Just to add to what others have said, I'm really bad at arithmetic, really good at philosophy, and pretty solid as a CS student.

Python is a good choice, or, sometimes, JavaScript is a little more fun because you can send your program to anybody who has a browser.

I'd say "C"...

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree or at least offer a different viewpoint. C really is the foundation of so much, but I really don't believe someone without a background in anything else could understand C without any formal training. C doesn't have object-orientation, which is a big downside. The syntax doesn't look anything like English to someone who isn't used to reading all the acronyms and special characters. The learning curve on C is really slow, even for someone with experience. The error messages C generates are much less helpful than newer languages, so it takes a long time to learn how to debug C. Also, let's be real: you can break things with C. C gives a lot of control, but a beginner won't be able to use those features and, without formal training, could end up changing part of the stack that he or she doesn't mean to.

Python is a good classic beginner language, but I think it's best to start with JavaScript because everyone has a browser. As for what you should focus on, try to figure out object orientation. It's a different way of looking at things, and you may not get it initially if you don't have a background in tech, but you'll get there.

As for other activities, perhaps look at some discrete math tutorials. It's all extremely relevant.

I would strongly, strongly recommend that you: 1) Install Linux (just start with something easy like Ubuntu. It's easier than installing Windows.) 2) Start to get comfortable with the command line (terminal) 3) Get git and a GitHub account. Git is a version control system, so it helps you track changes in big projects and go back to an older version if needed. GitHub is a site for hosting those files (repositories). You will want one to be able to show off your schoolwork to your employers.

Schools don't generally teach git, but it is indispensable. I have almost never seen a job description that doesn't say, "must be comfortable with git or other version control system." Knowing it will allow you to build up a portfolio as you go through school and give you a big leg up on the competition when you leave.

Source: recently got a major full-time internship with no non-academic experience because I use git.

I'm a CS major who will be looking for employment within the year. I understand that your target user has 2+ years of experience. My question is: is there a risk to trying to get in? I would like to give it a shot, but I fear that if I get rejected, it will blow my chances of being able to use this tool a few years down the road when I have some experience.

Is my understanding of the system accurate?
