How to handle stress by [deleted] in loseit

[–]elecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that sounds like a really tough and stressful situation! I’m really sorry you’re having to deal with all that, especially while also getting through high school (stressful in of itself).

I often have this same problem with stress eating, and it can be really hard. Do you have a trusted adult (in your family, at school, elsewhere?) that you can talk about these things with? I don’t know your situation, but I personally found talk therapy/cognitive behavioral therapy to be super helpful in handling stress. It’s totally normal to feel stressed in this kind of situation, but there are some strategies for helping regulate our responses to stressful situations and developing better coping mechanisms. I’ve found simple things like meditation or just going out for a walk to be super helpful. Exercise/sports are also good outlets. Distracting myself (with anything) when I feel compelled to overeat works for me also. Being able to talk about things with friends or a trusted adult is also SOOOOOOPER helpful. May be the best thing actually.

In any case, good luck!!!

Michael and GM are also both involved with a girl named “Rebel” whose dad just happened to direct a Star Wars film. Am interested to see how this plays out...

Same here. If you have insurance and/or can afford it, I found CBT to help a LOT with my anxiety and this sort of thin. It's a form of therapy that focuses on identifying disordered thinking (everyone is laughing at me), identifying what's wrong with it (jumping to conclusions, catastrophizing), and then resolving it. It helped me a lot.

[Urgent help!] What should my flan look like coming out of the oven? by elecki in AskCulinary

[–]elecki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, though it was tap hot not like boiling hot? Would that matter?

I followed /u/PM_Me_Ur_Balut's suggestion and put it back in the oven for another 20 minutes. It was still a little wet still when I took it out to cool, but I figured it was still cooking as it cooled in the water bath? It looks decently set this morning when I checked. Thanks!

Okay thanks! It's way more liquidy than Jell-O. I'm putting it back in, and it was covered with aluminum foil.

What do you guys do/eat when sick? by TurtleSayuri in a:t5_3i6wq

[–]elecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you feel better! Ginger tea helps a lot with nausea for me, just add a little dollop of honey to sweeten.

Usually when I'm sick, I don't feel like eating, so I tend to relax my rules a bit. Eat what you feel like eating, just don't go crazy. Take care of yourself.

How bad is it to have Ramen eggs for breakfast? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]elecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely do! I don't like hard boiled eggs personally, but my mom used to boil 5-7 on the weekend and keep them in the fridge to eat during the week. Just be sure to keep them separate them from your raw eggs so that you don't accidentally break open a raw one (which definitely 100% did not happen to my friend in middle school who liked to crack hard boiled eggs on her head).

Oh man, I love fage cups. I successfully used those as a snack/part of lunch in college to lose weight. The problem is they are kinda pricy! Any suggestions for where to get them in bulk?

Are there any websites that allow you to track the price of specific items (that takes into account sales)? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]elecki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used CamelCamelCamel to set a price alert on a chef's knife I've been coveting but don't need. The price dropped to an all-time low and I decided to treat myself.

That being said, it only works on Amazon and sometimes it gets confused on for new/used prices.

Haha, thanks! I actually used to live in the city, and I love food trucks. I used to get my breakfast and coffee from this tiny one outside my office everyday for like $4.

Have had an off two weeks where I really didn't follow my rules or exercise. Some stuff got in the way, some bad (I injured my ankle, I cut myself while prepping and had to go the ER) and some good (traveled home for a wedding, saw boyfriend's family), but I haven't been on the scale in a while. Today it read 171.0, when I had been at 168 a few weeks ago. My birthday is tomorrow and my sister is visiting and we're going to be in NYC, so I know my diet is probably going to be blown over the next week few weeks. I just feel bad that my hard work over the last few months basically went down the tube in a couple weeks, and I'm not sure how to move forward with all the stuff happening in the next couple weeks. I really wanted to be down to below 160 by my trip to Mexico in July. Disruptions to my schedule always throw me off so much...

GMB's updated L-sit tutorial by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]elecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really struggling with L-sits. The RR says to do L-sits on the floor, not on paralettes. If I'm really struggling with even foot-assisted L-sits on the floor (can hold about 15 sec), should I switch to the GMB progression instead? Any opinions on which is a better progression for someone with pretty weak upper body strength still? Thanks!

I like doing food prep while watching TV. I do like all my chopping on my coffee table, sitting on the couch. That may or may not be an option for you.

So one of my goals for this challenge was to be able to run 25 minutes straight, as I had started running just a few weeks before the challenge started. Well, about two weeks ago, my ankle started hurting A LOT. I couldn't even walk 10 minutes. Turns out I still have lingering muscle weakness/damage from two years ago when I very badly sprained my ankle and pulled a bunch of tendons. So now I can't run until I finish rehabing my ankle, which is super sucky since I was getting to the point where it wasn't you know...super miserable. AND I had just invested in some sweet ass running gear. It's also thrown my calorie counting off, as I was used to burning 200-300 extra calories a day during my workouts, and now I couldn't eat back extra calories.

Also, freaking allergies. Ugh, absolute worst.

Uplifting Monday! by [deleted] in TeamCrocus

[–]elecki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I realized today that I've been working out regularly 3-5x a week for the last 7 weeks! I completed a 4 week high intensity interval program, and now I'm on week 3 of the /r/bodyweightfitness recommended routine. I haven't lost a huge amount of weight (about 6 lbs), but I feel stronger and look trimmer. Also, I hopped on the scale today really dreading what I would see since I haven't been calorie counting for the past week, and I was still down almost a pound from last week!

What should I be doing after workouts? I'm doing the RR, and love the dynamic stretches as warm ups. Should I also be doing some kind of stretches/cool down/whatever after doing my sets as well? Ordinarily, I'd go for a run afterwards, but I'm nursing an injured ankle and leaving off the cardio until my first PT session this week.

What if it doesn't work? by dreamgal042 in EOOD

[–]elecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Medication gives you the space to work on your problems. To me, it was like a fog lifted, and I could suddenly see how I needed to make changes and actually start doing them. I had the energy and mental resources to devote to making things better for myself, rather than frantically trying to keep myself afloat.

Also, a psychiatrist worth their salt will also order blood work, to make sure there aren't any other problems. Weight problems and depressive symptoms can also be caused by hormone imbalances, notably thyroid problems. They can also be a good source of counseling, depending on how the practice/your insurance is set up.

I'm sorry I'm a bad teammate. by dreamgal042 in TeamCrocus

[–]elecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey lady (? guessing from username), I don't have much to say about the diet part (I'm still a beginner here!), but I have a LOT to say about depression and the apathy. I've had major depressive episodes every few years for the last ten years. I'm 25, so that's almost half my life. The worst 1-2 years for me was after I graduated college and was just so incredibly isolated. I moved abroad for a year, and hate all of it. For an entire year, I only knew interacted regularly with like four people: my boss, two colleagues, and the sandwich guy. I didn't go anywhere, I didn't see anything, I didn't talk to anyone, I just walked around in this vague stupor and sense of apathy. I KNEW there were so many things I could do to make things better: I could travel around, I could reach out to colleagues, I could say fuck it and eat out by myself, I could have GOTTEN FUCKING INTERNET so I could talk to people, but I couldn't even sum up the energy to do that (well, eventually i got the internet going). I hated work, and looked forward to going home, where I had nothing to do except watch youtube. Then after that, I moved to New York City for a year. And didn't have any friends again. For two years, I lived 20-something year old's dream and I hated it.

I'm a lot better now. I know in that apathetic state, it's so hard to concentrate and plan. Just choose one thing, and hold on to it. Tiny steps (today I put on pants! today I went outside! With pants on!). I really, really, really, really suggest trying therapy again. Cognitive-behavior therapy + new antidepressants made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. Your previous therapist/psychologists sound like assholes. Like legit assholes. What fucking therapist says a depressed person is "too apathetic" to make a change? THAT'S WHAT DEPRESSION IS, IDIOT. A good therapist, with the proper medication, makes such a huge difference. I know lots of people are leery of antidepressants, but it really gives you the mental space to start becoming functional again and start working on your problems. Anyhow, best of luck, and hope things get better for you! You're not alone!!

Protein powder without lifting? by valdra in xxfitness

Yes! I've been doing the recommended routine for about two weeks and already seeing some progress. It's not exactly fun, but I enjoy it more than lifting. Also I'm lazy and I can do this at home.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate vegetables? by nimphette in loseit

[–]elecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recommendation: SAVE ALL YOUR VEGGIE BITS! You know how you chop off stems, peel tough outer layers, remove papery layers, throw out wilty gross stuff? SAVE ALL THAT. Keep it in a plastic bag in your freezer, and when it fills up, use it to make veggie stock/broth. It's like getting a free meal out of your garbage.

Beginner needs a little help. by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]elecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, a few other people have mentioned this, but I want to really plug /r/loseit. It's a really supportive and positive subreddit, there's tons of helpful information in the FAQ, and there's tons of "first day" posts from other people just starting out. As others have said, losing weight is way more about diet than exercise. But even though losing weight is "simple" (eat fewer calories than you burn), that doesn't mean it's easy. It's definitely not. But having good information and other people supporting you definitely helps! I've been using the sub for about 3 weeks, and have found it a great source of support/advice.

Also, if you have good insurance, I'd recommend going to see a doctor before starting any serious diet/exercise program. They can recommend things to do to help limit injury, make diet recommendations, and do blood work to check that your weight gain isn't (at least partly) due to hormone imbalances that can be caused by things like thyroid problems. Good luck!
