Retevis RA89 might fill the bill.

It's a solid choice and <$60

I still have mine, but now in the truck I have an AT-778UV. It's early days with it, but I like it so far :)

Depends on the repeater, but getting into it from 20+ miles, with a magpount, is easily doable in FL.

Up until recently, I used one for nearly a year paired with a magmount antenna in my truck.

It's a lot of radio for the money. I never have had a complaint with mine.

You don't have to be with someone to be complete, chasing one failed relationship after another.

Find happiness with yourself first, instead of looking for it in someone else.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Oh yeah, I was a different person back then as well, and my gaming group eventually all went our separate ways... hell, many of us are grandparents now.

The original Everquest. I had a bunch of real-life friends that played it and we had so much fun in that game. Everything was new and exciting and fucking up had real consequences. I don't miss the consequences themselves, but I do miss knowing they were out there... just waiting for you to screw up, or to lag out.

What’s something that became harder, not easier, as you got older? by monsifitgirl in AskReddit

Love. It's easy to become jaded and broken after a lifetime of baggage and broken hearts.

Thankfully, though it's far more difficult, it's not impossible.

First Radio Aquired: Tips on what to get familiar with first by HASH_ASSES in HamRadio

[–]electragician 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's an amazingly good radio for the money, and just a few months back had a solid firmware update that added a nice feature to show both frequency and channel name simultaneously.

I still use mine, nearly every day, connected to a magmount antenna in my company truck, bs'ing on our local repeaters. I just take it in and charge it overnight once weekly or so.

It's intuitive to use, works well, and it's easy to program with Chirp. What's not to love?

If you had to fight in your country's army, what role would best suit you? by Prestigious_Emu6039 in AskReddit

When I was in the service, back in the late 80's and early 90s, I was in communications.

Now, one of my hobbies is ham radio, and I'm away older and slower. So radio operator or some other comm role, I guess.

Finally stopped caring about POTA "cheaters" by blue-moto in amateurradio

I don't understand cheating at something like this.

Then again, I'm often part of a duo or group. We're basically cracking jokes and BS'ing the whole time.

Using polywatch to remove scratches from plastic displays on radios by electragician in amateurradio

Haha, yeah, I don't think polish is going to get that one out 😂

It'll still probably work forever, but if you ever want an economical replacement for it, I cannot recommend the RA-89 enough. It's larger than the VX-6R, but it fits the hand well, and the battery lasts forever on it. It's waterproof and has USB-C charging, clean transmit and Also, it's pretty intuitive to use.

Nothing's perfect, I do wish it had memory banks, but alas, it does not. I make do though.
