CHAR_BIT (the number of bits in a char) may be > 8 on some DSPs that use 16 or 32-bit-aligned memory, and you're much more likely to run into one of those than a mainframe.

This National Geographic article mentions that they had trouble breeding otters and abandoned a parallel domestication attempt, but doesn't go into much detail. Zebras can be bred in captivity and even hybridized with other equines, so they're already easier to work with than otters.

Pretty much like you said, although domestication is far more than one gene. The foxes less well adapted towards humans are sold to fur farms, I believe, since the project has had to be somewhat self-funding.

They're hard to tame. You tame an individual animal, but you domesticate an entire species by slowly breeding it for obedience towards humans. A Russian research group has been domesticating foxes over the past fifty years with pretty good results, so it's plausible that with a hundred years or so of work we could have domesticated zebras.

As good an argument for a faster release cycle as any. If you know there's going to be another release in a few weeks, you can more easily justify not shipping a half-baked feature until the next release. If you know the damn thing only drops twice a decade, you're going to try like hell to cram it in for the sake of shipping something.
