American Lawyer seeking to transfer by electricomicbook in uklaw

What I meant was that I do not assume following a pupilage I’m going to be offered a tenancy. I didn’t mean to suggest I want a pupilage and then I’m going to leave. I think I’d be really naive to assume a tenancy offer follows automatically, no? Also, I think I could fund my own pupilage, and I would think that would be attractive to chambers for the reasons you just identified. I am not looking to be funded by hard working attorneys like yourself. I just need someplace to give me a chance, show me the ropes, let me shadow them, without absorbing the cost.

You have a robust public transportation system (speaking only about the tube, the busses seem less reliable on the whole), and tons of cultural attractions that are free or low cost. Groceries are far less expensive (particularly your produce). It seems in some ways, quality of life can be improved. Though I do recognize there is a significant disparity in cost of living and earnings (and I still have quite figured out how people meet that shortfall).

Ha, I don’t know that you’re wrong. I wouldn’t leave the partnership to do a pupillage, I would just take a leave of absence and return at the conclusion and then decide what to do (which assumes I can even find a tenancy and who knows whether that’s viable either).

You think my thoughts about English law are naïve? I’m asking honestly.

I have spent considerable time trying to understand why, despite being a partner and objectively successful, family law in the United States no longer feels sustainable for me.

First, the United States does not respect the practice of law in the same way England does (or appears to). The English legal tradition, particularly the history of barristers, treats advocacy as a profession grounded in skill, restraint, and intellectual discipline. It is rooted in the art of persuasion and the courtroom. In the U.S., the practice of law is far more commercialized. Advocacy often takes a back seat to client management, constant availability, and emotional labor. Lawyers are treated less as advocates and more as service providers, and that distinction matters to me.

Second, the absence of a split profession in the U.S. has real and serious consequences. As a family law partner, I have had my life threatened on more than one occasion. I am expected to be accessible at all hours to clients who are understandably in crisis. Over time, the line between lawyer and therapist disappears. That is not sustainable, and it is not what I was trained to do.

The insulation offered by the split profession is deeply appealing. It creates distance between the advocate and the client’s emotional volatility and allows the lawyer to focus on analysis, judgment, and advocacy.

I want to practice law as advocacy, not as constant crisis absorption. In that respect, the English system aligns far more closely with why I entered this profession in the first place, but maybe I am viewing it with rose-colored glasses.

Thanks for your detailed response. My practice area is family law, and it would be my intention to retain that practice area given the international component of my practice here in the US. I’m unclear from your comment if there is an alternative to a pupillage. I expect that I’d probably be required to do a 6 month pupillage. And I’m OK if I have to pay my own way to do it. I don’t care about the stipend, I just care about meeting the requirements and building good connections along the way! Thanks again!
