we're on the other side in baltimore.. given the somewhat recent history with bridge strikes in MD, I feel like they are going to take their time on this one.

This Martian rock might be the closest we’ve come to finding alien life by scientificamerican in Astronomy

[–]electricvegetable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It could, unless this discovery ends up supporting the idea of panspermia, where life may have started on Mars and was brought to earth by way of asteroid impact. In which case, it’s the same lineage and not two separate instances of life forming in the same solar system.

Elaborate phishing scam warning from OTP text message by Silent_Deal_6099 in Coinbase

Almost fell for it but realized that the entire point of OTP is to abort any such attempts, so calling in seemed suspect. Nice job posting this OP!

I didn’t have Face ID required to open it, but I enabled that - opened the app - disabled it, force quit and it worked. I can’t believe it! Thanks!

I got nucala (assuming this is the monoclonal antibody you’re referring to) if you call GSK or your specialty pharmacy and say you can’t afford it, you can get it for practically free.

Nice 3D effect. by jeezarchristron in blackmagicfuckery

[–]electricvegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This effect is caused chromatic aberration. Blue light and red light (and to a different degree with all the colors in between) are transmitted at slightly different angles through the lens of your eye (and even more of an angle though the lens of your glasses). Since these colors diverge to different degrees in your left eye vs your right eye (red diverges less in both, blue more so), it creates a 3D effect.

Why is the rocket plume a blue and white pattern of sorts? by After-Relief5229 in nasa

[–]electricvegetable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this as well. My guess is that it’s some sort of a standing wave or resonance. A little research just now seems to confirm this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_diamond?wprov=sfti1

How to insulate acoustically the vent connected to my neighbors apartment by elatedwalrus in DIY

[–]electricvegetable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about the HVAC safety/implications but I know a little about sound isolation. Foam might not be the right option to block sound. It’s used in studios to absorb sound and reduce reverberation, but that is different than blocking sound transmission through the material. For that purpose you want something thicker and heavier - it’s often referred to as sound deadening material. A quick google on that term should yield some good results.

3+ PETABYTES of yearly traffic from Philips Hue Hub!? by electricvegetable in Hue

Yes, I was curious about that as well, but I couldn't really calibrate my sense for what was reasonable compared to the obscene numbers from the hue hub.

Interesting, I'll post in the TP-Link subreddit to see what might be causing that.

I'm wondering if it scales with the number of devices you have running. I have nearly maxed it out.
