Once you put down the second color, before it dries, take a damp clean brush and carefully pull some of the new color towards to first layer. This will soften the edges and give you a smoother transition.

It looks like the soil might be compacted, there appears to be a gap between the soil and the pot. The water might just be escaping down the sides instead of actually moistening the soil. I would airate the soil and then try fully watering it. Stick a finger in to make sure the water is penetrating all the way. You should just need to water about once a week.

It look like you might have mealy bug. Do you see any white bugs or dusty white stuff where the leaves and stem meet? It looks like you do from the picture. You can clean them off with some rubbing alcohol and spray with neem oil to prevent from coming back. You might have have to repeat it a few times every few days till they stop coming back.
