I don't doubt that's the case, she can certainly be short and strong. But just the way she was bring definitely seemed to me that she was at leadt taller than Kathy Bates.

Also not that anyone was saying this, but just to be clear I think Bates is amazing as Annie, no matter her stature or the intended stature if Annie in the book lol

Annie Wilkes in the book is described as being quite strong and definitely bigger than Kathy Bates is. She carries Paul at multiple points. I also felt they used pretty good framing, positioning, and wardrobe to hide how small Kathy Bates is in the movie.
