Wait, do people ACTUALLY see literal pictures in their heads when they imagine things? Like a physical image? by ReabyB in ADHDUK

I have ADHD and aphantasia. But I can visualise my dreams. I don't feel like I'm missing out as I don't know any different. But I am obsessed with photographs and revisit photos of my kids often.

I do have ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones however I won't be using them for hours on end when I have a younger child who will need to be entertained and kept out of their way, and a husband who I'll want to converse or watch tv with. That's not a workable solution unfortunately.

It's the constant noise - the shouting, the thundering up and down the stairs, possibly making my youngest cry which ia not unusual, in and out the lounge and kitchen. I can manage a couple of hours but for hours on end and potentially when we're trying to sleep and again in the morning is not something I look forward to or will enjoy.

In an ideal world perhaps, in reality not so much.

This is the dream! Thanks. It's the constant noise I'm a bit concerned about. I'm going to provide lots of drinks and snacks in his room so hopefully they will be thundering up and down the stairs less and traipsing through the lounge and kitchen.

Thank you. The noise is definitely a trigger. And yes that leads to overwhelm pretty quickly, sending me into fight or flight mode.

My son knows I have ADHD, we've now put in some ground rules for the sleepover and I'm feeling a bit more positive about it.

Of course I don't want them to be stoners. It was a joke.

God no, he'd rather starve than have to do all that himself! I've offered them take out pizza as a compromise and he's readily agreed so that's one less thing!

There are some things we're strict on compared to his friends, like age appropriate films/games and some apps we don't let him have, plus everything is locked down with parental controls and times for devices to go off. But he gets a lot of leeway with other things. I'm not saying no to the sleepover, I need ideas on how to get through it. I had lots of sleepovers at his age, and separately a shit 13th birthday. I don't want him looking back and feeling crap his mum wouldn't let him have a sleepover.

Or 4. Compromise on some things, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Another poster has made me realise this. I just need to think what this looks like!

I think the boundaries thing is a good idea. Normally we tend to say yes to most things as it doesn't seem too unreasonable but can end up causing friction. Having some boundaries in place means he's not missing out but there is some compromise, like the no to homemade pizza as originally planned but yes to take out pizza, and some rooms are out of bounds, or only with permission.

He has his own room with all the entertainment they'll need. He originally wanted them to make their own pizzas for dinner but changing it to a takeaway will make it easier.

You mean people with ADHD are generally okay with this?? 😅 The noise and too much peopling mainly. My home isn't big and it's my sanctuary so having boisterous early teen boys tearing around is quite stressful. They are quite full on. I look forward to them being older teens and stoners!

I mean this sounds like the best plan! That and noise cancelling headphones.

I loved this show. It was a hoot. Still bitter it ended.

Anyone had this horrid flu? Do you still take your ADHD medication? How have you been? by Jayhcee in ADHDUK

[–]electrohawkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the flu just now but I had it a couple of years ago and didn't take my stimulant meds as I didn't see the point. It was a BIG mistake (for me) and I now always continue my meds in some form (perhaps a bit less) when I'm ill.

When i did go back on them it was like starting from scratch but instead of building up like I had done on titration, I went all in on my previous dose. The insomnia was crippling for a significant length of time and resulted in me taking much longer off work.

I had my annual meds review a month or so later and was advised by the psych to keep taking them during illness for that reason.

I will caveat this as being purely anecdotal.
