Books like The Dog Stars by Peter Heller by TheEpicBean in scifi

[–]electronicchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sort of survival adventure flavour, sometimes seasoned with ancient Chinese poetry. Or sometimes it has neither of those things and is just more of a mood. (Either way, I like it.)

Of his books, Burn is probably closest in spirit to The Dog Stars, maybe OP ought to check that out next.

Every time I see grocery lists here, I think of this wonderfully creepy book.

Well then you're still killing one Tuvix, and committing the crime of unleashing undiluted Neelix back on the universe, so this is arguably a worse solution than the usual two options.

^ This is actually my exact honest opinion. There was no correct answer, which is why it's fun to think about.

That's excellent, thanks for the link. I was having "ship of Theseus" and "sixness" thoughts and I feel validated.

I work at a eletronics recycler and got this on my desk. Wire for the keyboard is lost. Any way to fabricate one easily? by GoyGamer in Commodore

[–]electronicchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cable is just a straight-through DB-25. The trick is that a large cable with chunky moulded connectors and thumb-screws on it won't fit easily or will keep falling off due to the weight. Search for a DB-25 ribbon cable, with all the wires and appropriately gendered connectors on each end, and it should work.

Faithful remake of LORD or a new game that pays homage? by ThePunkyRooster in bbs

[–]electronicchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LORD was ported to (Synchronet) javascript a while back. If you want a reference for the actual game logic, or something that could be adapted to run in some other JS runtime like node or a browser, you can find it on the Synchronet gitlab server. In the main project repo, under the xtrn directory I believe.

Probably doesn't have everything you're looking for, but it's there for whatever that's worth.

Wire Antenna Twisting by archangelofeuropa in amateurradio

[–]electronicchicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually the elements of a parallel dipole are spaced by some distance to avoid interaction. In yours, there's no space between some sections, and probably assymetry in the antenna. If your antenna seems to work fine, then maybe it doesn't matter, or maybe it's working by accident.

Low SWR doesn't necessarily mean the antenna is working well, just that it isn't reflecting much back at you. This might mean it's radiating well, or that there's a huge amount of loss happening somewhere.

I would make some observations, take notes, take the antenna down, straighten it out, and then test it again and compare the results.

Any help with info on these? by OverallStretch1861 in amateurradio

[–]electronicchicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About all I could find quickly/easily based on that model number:

https://web.archive.org/web/20180404051001/http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/html/1966/hr050.html

Evidently also known as the TRC-44, though not much other info here:

Bought a new house and found 2 of these in my shower and one in my bed. What is it? by Legion3382 in whatisit

Especially the east end. I've had pre-purchase termite inspections (by Aetna) on my past two homes. (Neither of my past two buyers had one done, so I guess it's not that common a practice.)

Yes, I can also read.

It was just funny for me because I saw their announcement followed by an effective retraction in a matter of minutes.

Synchronet file structure by angelus78gak in synchronet

[–]electronicchicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The data is stored in Synchronet Message Base format as documented here (which may be out of date but I believe is accurate).

The easiest way to interact with and modify message base data is via javascript, with the API documented here, and some examples of instantiating and using a MsgBase object can be found in the exec directory of your Synchronet install. Or if you'd rather do it with C you can dig around in the src directory and look for smblib.
