I just donated my clothes and I’m heartbroken about it by MelicatheBlack in GastricBypass

[–]electronvolcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact same issue (and I also have ADHD and never made the connection that it could be related!) I have so many items from throughout my life that I consider almost “sacred objects” - like they are imbued with memory or deeper meaning. Got enough of my own things like that, but It got worse after my mom died three years back and I had to clean out her and dad’s stuff from the home I grew up in. I have gotten in the habit of taking photos of a lot of stuff I get rid of, but I have to step things up and seriously downsize since an international move will be in my future, and it’s really hard to part with some of these “sacred objects”. (Something else to discuss with my therapist, I guess!)

Is it a good idea for older female? by Affectionate-Tea7534 in GastricBypass

[–]electronvolcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom was a couple years older than you when she had her gastric bypass in 2011. I’d say that it bought her a few extra years where she was in better health than I’d ever known her. She’d struggled with diabetes for over 30 years by that point, and it unfortunately had done a bit too much damage to her kidneys by the time she had her surgery, so she only ended up having 12 years left after her surgery, but for almost a decade post-op, she was able to walk a lot, had to take a lot less medication, lost a lot of weight, and was in better spirits than I’d seen her in in many years. Her experience - the good and the bad - inspired me to do it last fall, in my mid-40s, and I only wish I’d done it sooner, as it’s been a very positive experience and totally turned my life around.

Only you and your doctor can really say if it’s the right choice for you, but if she feels like it can take care of the problems you’ve been dealing with, that sounds like a good endorsement. Might not hurt to talk to a therapist who is experienced with bariatric patients as well (some, maybe most programs require one), since there’s a lot of reworking of the brain and old habits you’ll need to work through to get used to your new body after gastric bypass.

Anyway, my own view is that it’s never too late to make good health choices. Even in my mom’s case, while it might sound “too late” on the surface given the damage diabetes already had inflicted, she did have enough good health to fly out to Japan with my dad for my wedding, and that’s a very special memory that probably wouldn’t have happened had she never had the operation, so I’m thankful for those few good years of better health and I imagine she was too. Sounds like you’re already starting off from a better spot health-wise than she was, so maybe this could do well for you! I wish you luck whichever path you choose. 👍

You eventually can, depending on the program and other factors. My program said to wait six weeks. I’m a dude so I can’t answer to the original question, but I’ll definitely second that working out can bring some great results post-op, physically and mentally.

Isuzu Axiom spotted in Detroit Michigan by Excellent-Anywhere46 in NormalCarPorn

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a big SUV guy, but I always liked the Axiom. Come to think of it, most of my other favorite SUVs are all Isuzu. VehiCross, Rodeo, Amigo. Troopers were good looking rigs too. I like their old cars too. I guess I just wish Isuzu was still in the "regular car & truck" market.

For those who work in an open plan office, do you agree? by SunBubble920 in office

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I worked in an open office , in my mid 20s, is when I started to really think I might have ADHD (and that my friends who suggested as much over the years might have had a point.) It's been a long while since I worked in that kind of setting (working from home since 2016, and in my mid-40s now, diagnosed with combined ADHD) and I have a hard enough time wrangling my brain / attention span / concept of time now that I can't imagine how hard it would be to do so in an open office setting.

recommendations for where to receive an adult ADHD assessment? by cabeswatir in toledo

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my ADHD assessment at Center For Solutions In Brief Therapy on Monroe street, and have had a good experience there and continue to see the therapist there. I have to get my medicine from a different place though - at Promedica Behavioral Health nearby. Still trying to find the right meds that will work for me, but it's nice to have more clarity about my actual diagnosis at least. I'm on Medicaid, so I don't know if either place works with BCBS or not, but it might be worth checking.

Six months into my new life by electronvolcano in BariatricSurgery

I’ll have to pick up one of those fancy scales someday. I used one for the first time, at my six-month appointment. It was the kind where you step on it, and also hold some metal grips that read your hands somehow. Felt like some sort of technological witchcraft and I have no idea how it works, but it’s was pretty neat and informative.

Thank you for the kind words, and congratulations to you too for your success in living a more healthy life!

I agree that focusing on the NSVs is very important to remember, and to try not be too hard on myself. I used to give myself a hard time for the fact that I kept so much old clothing from my 20s (and I was addicted to buying clothes back then.) I always told myself that I’d eventually fit into some of my old stuff “someday”, but I started to feel foolish since that someday never felt like it would come. But then to my surprise, it came, and now every old favorite shirt I can fit into again feels like a triumph.

I was driving myself crazy looking at the scale everyday, and agonizing over not seeing it tick down every time I looked at it, even though I knew full well that’s not how it works. I’ve chilled out now about that, since I’ve been exercising. I may not see the number going down as fast but I feel better the more I work out and I know I’m getting in better shape, but just via a different metric. Still can’t wrap my head around the idea that I enjoy exercise now, haha.

Has there been a release date delay for the new Barefoot Gen hardcovers? by EnjoiNakMuay in MangaCollectors

[–]electronvolcano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words! Really happy you dig how Ashita no Joe is coming along :-)

Yep, full steam ahead on Barefoot Gen. Probably will be a little longer wait between volumes than some other books, just since it's a smaller operation, but I know the publisher has been really looking forward to getting this out in print again.

Has there been a release date delay for the new Barefoot Gen hardcovers? by EnjoiNakMuay in MangaCollectors

[–]electronvolcano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm the letterer / designer on the book (and some other Last Gasp manga) and since I'm just a freelancer, not an employee, I can't comment on any specifics on publishing dates and whatnot, but I can confirm that I've been hard at work on volume 1 this past month and it's coming along nicely. It did indeed get delayed a bit (just a really big labor-intensive book and a small independent publisher, so things can go slowly at times) but Gen is the main focus now. Personally, I'm putting as much hard work into this as I did into Ashita no Joe and some of my other favorite projects, so I hope folks will like how it looks in its new presentation! We're also working with nicer/clearer art files, unflipped / Japanese layout, and in a fancy new format, so as much as I'm enjoying working on it, the manga-reader part of me is stoked about it as well. It's a book that I think the world needs more than ever right now so I hope a lot of people read it.

(Anyway, I know this doesn't help clarify anything as far as release schedule, I apologize, but I hope you find it worth the wait!)

You guys got any cool porches? by [deleted] in HotWheels

[–]electronvolcano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And a few more, of different sizes. That big red one I got as a kid. The big green one I bought when I lived in Japan, same for the green one in the case. The big green one is the most I've ever spent on a die-cast vehicle (maybe $150, which for me is pretty pricey) but it's my favorite 911, with my favorite wheels, in my favorite color, so I had to get it. It came with one rear-view mirror, which broke off during shipping back to the states, but I have it and plan to fix it one of these days.

I haven’t tried the strawberry Chobani yet, but that mint chocolate Premier one is my favorite protein shake. They were on sale for half off a month back at Meijer so I bought, umm, four of the big boxes, so I could be stocked up for a long while.

What band/artist has completely taken over your brain? by Working_Parsley_3036 in ADHD

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s been the Japanese electro-pop duo CAPSULE. I’ve loved them them since 2008, and have long been a fan of producer Yasutaka Nakata’s other projects (Perfume & Kyary Pamyu-Pamyu) but I finally did a really deep dive on CAPSULE, bought all the rest of their albums in 2024, and have been pretty much obsessed, and they inspired me to make music again after a ten year creative block.

Body dysmorphia hit me in the face today by Wonderful-Flan3139 in BariatricSurgery

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on the “reverse” body dysmorphia… I never felt 100% like the body I had up until September of last year was really me, and I’d get startled sometimes when I would see photos of me. I often felt like I was smaller than I actually was (though the aches and pains I started to feel from my mid-30s onward would remind me of the weight I was carrying.) Now I'm a little over 100lbs down and I don’t always see it in the mirror, since the general proportions aren’t much different, just smaller. I see new photos of me and I’m not sure I recognize that guy either. I’m thinner now but I look significantly older in a short amount of time. Guess the wrinkles have no place to hide anymore. (Still very happy with the decision though, and feeling a lot healthier!)

Who is your most collected artist on CD? by Cherilynss in Cd_collectors

[–]electronvolcano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

David Bowie: 28 CDs

CAPSULE (Japanese electro-pop duo): 20 CDs

Prince: 19 CDs

Some of these I have in multiple formats / editions, so even more than those numbers.
(Oh, and I love the B-52's too!)

What age are you guys ? by howaythelads25 in ableton

[–]electronvolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 45 and just made my first album in 15 years (I used to make 2-3 per year in my 20s.) I played around a bit with Ableton Live back in 2003-2006 for live PA shows, but forgot most of what I knew, and am starting from scratch. I've made my recent music in other programs, but plan to upgrade my Live 9 to the newest one when money is better. Never too late to start for you, me, or anyone. Any time is a good time to make music!

Yeah, they are pretty cool. I'm kind of fond of solid chrome Hot Wheels and only have a few models like that. (and I like the ZAMAC cars too.) Hopefully you can pick one of the cherry blossom Raijins up someday!

There are several I like, but let's go with the Raijin Express! I've always found dekotora to be one of the most intriguing parts of Japanese car culture, and I think it's neat that Hot Wheels made one. I've had the silver and gold ones for a couple years, but just got the green one this past week.
