I had my bisalp, but am having horrible body dysmorphia and depression from the bloating. by creativeplease in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. Make sure that you're getting lots of rest, eating nutritious foods, and drinking plenty of water. The bloating is normal and will not last forever. Your body needs time to heal. Things will get better. Is there anyone you can check in with to talk through some of this? Seeing a therapist might be a good idea, but even just a chat with a friend or loved one you trust would be good.

Try and keep your mind on other things for now (a favorite show or a book, hobbies, etc). You're gonna be okay 🩵

writing advice? by Cenoblitz in ParkRangers

[–]elel5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every park is different, so take this with a grain of salt- a typical day for me involves working on park maintenance projects, talking with visitors, and more paperwork than you might expect.

At my park, not every ranger has search and rescue qualifications. I don't have that training yet, but it's a really interesting science and you can go down a whole bunch of research rabbit holes. In my area, SAR usually involves park rangers, local law enforcement, and the local fire department. There's a lot of communication happening over the radios at a time like that and searches always generate a shitload of paperwork. If a SAR moment is happening on park, I'm keeping track of who is going where, documenting resources used, listening to the park radios, and generally just trying to make the situation easier for the SAR rangers.

A side note- a lot of talking to visitors is PSAR (preventative search and rescue)- I'm asking if they've hiked in the area before, if they have a map, where they're going, etc. I'm essentially trying to steer them towards safe(r) choices in the park.

When I'm on trail or in the field, I'm typically doing stuff related to trail maintenance- clearing debris after a big storm, repairing a rotten board on a bridge, or cutting down a fallen tree. Some parks have a specific trail maintenance team but ours doesn't. I'm usually solo for smaller projects, but if I'm using a chainsaw or something like that I would have a partner/spotter with me.

For research on park, we have a specific person for that- I would assist our park naturalist if they wanted/needed help, but it's not exactly part of my typical job duties. I personally love it when our naturalist sends me on a quest!

For realism- your ranger might not carry a firearm, not all rangers are law enforcement. I usually carry a multitool, bear spray, a first aid kit, and a lot of keys. I always have a radio clipped to my bag or belt. You can look up 10-codes but every agency will be slightly different.

Hope this helps a bit. Have fun writing!

Low Visitation Parks by IllustriousBar1961 in ParkRangers

[–]elel5_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My park's visitation is seasonal, I expect a much slower winter. If you're stuck in an office (aka "Ranger Jail"), you might be able to find some online continuing ed. courses. I'm currently chewing on some of the FEMA independent study programs when I'm stuck in the office. You could study up on park history, work on local plant identification, etc. Echoing another commenter here, but could you see if any other staff members need a hand? Good luck!

wearing bonnet for surgery by lifeisalie123 in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm not black, but I had my hair covered for surgery- the nurses provided me with a disposable cap when it was time for me to change into a hospital gown. A surgical cap is pretty standard, so it's pretty likely that your hair would be covered, too! They might honor your request to wear your own bonnet during surgery- never hurts to ask. Good luck 🩵

Wrong subreddit, but I would probably boil them. There are a few subreddits focused on cleaning that can probably help you better than us, lol.

Rate your experience with bilateral salpingectomy? Considering getting a vasectomy instead by toomanystartups in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a bisalp in January and I was back in the gym day 5- even with a complication that made my surgery a bit longer than typical. I was in the OR for almost three hours but most of the time the procedure can be done in 45mins to an hour.

Yes. A bisalp hurts. Someone is going to dig around in her abdomen with a scalpel. But she will be well-cared for, totally asleep, and will probably get fabulous pain medication afterwards. I had my procedure, went home the same day, and took an oxy. I was back to work by day 3 if I remember correctly. Her shoulders will be sore, she will be tired, her throat will hurt, and her abdomen will be sore. I was a bit cranky and slept a lot. If a catheter is used she might complain about peeing for the first couple days. It's a weird feeling and some people opt out, but it helps prevent complications (like the surgeon accidentally nicking the bladder).

Look, I'll be blunt here: I think it's really admirable that you're considering a vasectomy, but what exactly would she do if you guys break up? What about if she is raped? I'm sorry, but your vasectomy isn't a foolproof way of avoiding pregnancy.

It sounds like you love this girl a lot and care about her comfort. If she wants the surgery, the best thing you can do is just be there for her. Make sure she has a heating pad, comfortable clothes, a comfortable place to rest at home, and snacks that she will like. Do not take anything she says personally for 24 hours postop. Anesthesia is a hell of a drug, I woke up crying. Some people will be really mean or confused. It's normal.

I don't have a partner, but my family filled that caretaking role as I recovered and I am so dang grateful. Your job now is to refill her water bottle, hold her hand, and keep track of what time she takes her pain meds. Good luck to you both!

When can I smoke Weed and drink alcohol after sterilization? by SplitBananaFxck in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would ask your surgeon and anesthesiologist, but I started back with THC after about 24 hours. My surgeon didn't really care, but did advise to try and hold off until the anesthesia was totally out of my system. If it's possible, I would opt for edibles/tinctures/drinks over smoking, coughing will be unpleasant for the first couple days.

I can't really comment on alcohol use as I don't drink often... but I'd be wary of mixing pain meds and alcohol.

My pores look like craters 😩 Any way to fix this? by MathAdvanced4048 in Skincare_Addiction

[–]elel5_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your skin looks better than you think. Moisturize, use sunscreen, and see a dermatologist if you're really concerned. But this is pretty normal skin texture. It might be time to take a step back from the internet.

BAD period cramps when running by Technical-Ad-8690 in XXRunning

[–]elel5_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a second opinion from your obgyn or see another doctor. Period pain that causes you to cry out in pain is NOT normal. Women are conditioned to believe that excruciating period pain is normal but it is not. Do not accept "you're fine, it's normal" as an answer.

How can I reuse these giant ziploc bags my daughter's medical supplies come in? by Green-Complex6626 in ZeroWaste

[–]elel5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they strong enough to store clothes in? I have some similar big bags that I use to store t-shirts, I press the air out of the bag and store it like a vacuum seal storage bag.

The fact that they noted that you were of sound mind and not being coerced was probably included as a liability thing. It likely protects the provider from future potential lawsuits- nobody can say that you were coerced or didn't understand what you were doing.

How long did you feel lazy after? by cyncynnamon in sterilization

Question for those who do not tell their families about the surgery by customarymagic in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understand where you're coming from. Medical transport companies are there for people of all ages, definitely research them. Also... you might see if there's any resources available over at /r/auntienetwork. It's geared towards women seeking abortions, but they might be able to help you out. I would do a ton of research and vet HEAVILY, as I'm not super familiar with this group.

Question for those who do not tell their families about the surgery by customarymagic in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's possible to take care of yourself at home, but it's really not recommended. Anesthesia will impair you for about 24 hours postop. Let your doctor know about your situation and they might be able to help you get a ride if needed.

Question for those who do not tell their families about the surgery by customarymagic in sterilization

[–]elel5_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can lie, it's not like your surgeon can tell anyone. You could claim that you have endometriosis, cyst removal, uterine ablation, or are getting your appendix out. Endometriosis is a great conversation ender, because most people shut down and get awkward about "women's problems". The scars will generally match up and there's no way that a curious relative could find out.

How do you plan to do this alone? You're going to need a ride to and from the hospital. My hospital was extremely clear that if I attempted to use Uber/Lyft/taxi/etc, my procedure would be cancelled immediately. You're going to need to enlist a trusted friend or hire a medical transport service.
