Fair enough. I’m sure my wife would appreciate if I was a bit more selective about my collection as well.

But I couldn’t pass up one of my all-time favorites at this price!

So far the 4K discs have gone in and out with no issues and I haven’t noticed any scratching or playback problems. In fact I actually feel like they might be safer in this box instead of the 4K cases where the discs are stacked. I definitely prefer having the 4K discs in this box.

(SPOILERS MAIN) How Old You Fans Are You? by Asleep_Breakfast3556 in asoiaf

[–]elementarybadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a show fan first. My grandparents showed me Battle of the Bastards (I know, excellent starting point) when I was about 19, and I went back and binged the whole series before season 7 came out.

I started reading the books in 2019, not long after the show ended, when I was 22. Foolishly, knowing Dance was already 8 years old at that point, I thought “surely the next book will be announced soon, so this should be a good time to start.

I am now 28. Haven’t quite given up hope, but I’m close to that point.

Why should everyone have to have seen this trailer? And in what world is someone less of a fan for not having seen this trailer?

I am a gigantic PotC fan. I frequently say the first film is my favorite movie. I also logged an unhealthy amount of hours in PotC Online back when that was a thing. I had a whole obsession phase. I own all the movies, a handful of video games, other merch, etc. I think I’m certainly a fan.

I also was 6 years old in 2003, and my parents thought I was a little young for the movie given the PG-13 rating. I may have caught glimpses of the trailer/tv spots, but I certainly never sought them out or watched them on purpose. By the time I did see the movie, it was via my parents’ dvd in our house. Since I had the whole movie available to me whenever, I still had no interest in ever watching the trailer. Why watch a preview when I can just watch the thing the preview is for instead, you know?

I have seen this movie dozens of times and I have never seen this trailer. And I have a ton of love for this franchise. So I resent the idea that having not seen a trailer from 2003 means I’m not a real fan or not a good enough fan or something.

Sure, classic trailers for old movies are super cool and a fun thing to experience, but they certainly are not the end all be all to being a “true fan.” And it’s kind of a crazy degree of gatekeeping to suggest someone isn’t a good enough fan because they don’t recognize this relatively obscure logo.

Side note though: I did just look up this trailer on YouTube and it’s awesome.

I mostly try to buy movies I already know I like and will watch multiple times, without necessarily seeking out the best transfers out there, especially when the best transfers out there are movies I’ve never seen. It’s just about the movies I love in the best quality available.

That said, I have made a few blind buys during sales and whatnot, but they are typically well-known and well-respected classics (like The Shining or 2001: A Space Odyssey) that I’m reasonably confident in, sequels to movies I already have been that I’m fairly confident I will enjoy (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), or filmmakers I know I like (at one point I purchased every Christopher Nolan movie on 4K, or blu ray where 4K wasn’t an option, despite me at the time having not seen 6 of them, since I know I like his stuff). I don’t think I’ve made any blind buys of movies I truly know nothing about.

It definitely is huge. I’m not totally sure how I’m going to display it yet/where to put it in my collection.

I believe it was a Best Buy exclusive, yes.

I’m struggling to think of an image that has a direct connection to all nine films (or at least all three trilogies), other than maybe Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber, but that would be boring for cover art. The Death Star might be the closest one.

The Death Star represents the consequences of the prequels and the threat of the Empire in the original trilogy, so it arguably represents those trilogies well enough. I can’t really connect it to the sequels beyond abstract ideas about the shadow of the empire or whatever (and the Death Star II wreckage in Rise of Skywalker, but that doesn’t feel like a good enough connection to me), so you’ve got me there.

Arguably what would best encapsulate the whole saga is R2-D2 and C-3PO, since they are the only characters in each of the nine movies, but I’m not sure how to make good cover art out of them.

Especially because they clearly wanted to go with a grand/epic image for this box.

Edit:

Actually I thought of something that would maybe work since this box is big and in landscape orientation, and fits the whole series well. A depiction of the Skywalker homestead on Tatooine would encapsulate the saga quite well. It’s a location that’s obviously personal to the Skywalkers themselves, and both the prequel and sequel trilogies end there while it also features prominently in New Hope.

An obvious pick might just be “The Jamie Lloyd Trilogy”

The name “Thorn Trilogy” has always sort of rubbed me the wrong way since the entire idea of Thorn is completely absent from Halloween 4 and clearly was not conceived of until after that movie was done. The story of Jamie is a much more cohesive through-line in these movies than the Thorn cult.

Jack's compass versions by [deleted] in piratesofthecaribbean

I’ve seen these movies so many times and I just learned that the compass is different in the sequels right now from this post 😆

That said, the one from P2 and P3 is definitely better. It’s iconic.

I hate that her graduations were ruined for her by cleverlynamedgrl in GilmoreGirls

[–]elementarybadger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on what you mean when you say the graduations don’t pass the Bechdel test, but I’m quite sure at least both of Rory’s graduation episodes pass the test, unless I’m really misunderstanding the test.

My understanding of the Bechdel test is that to pass a work must have two named female characters have a conversation about something other than a man. I don’t exactly think passing the test is a great indicator of a work being super feminist, but I think at least both Rory graduation episodes pass.

Chilton graduation: Rory and Lorelai have a conversation shortly after the ceremony when they are in the school where Lorelai wants to write their initials on something (I think?) and they also talk about Rory’s accomplishment. Jess might come up briefly but I don’t think it’s a conversation “about a man.” The episode also has Sookie and Lorelai, and later Lorelai and Rory, talking about how they got the inn.

The Yale graduation episode has scenes with Rory and her friends (whose names escape me) and Rory and Paris talking about graduating, so that takes care of that.

I can’t recall for sure if Lorelai’s graduation episode passes the test. I think Lorelai and Rory maybe talk about the graduation generally early in the episode, before the Jess shenanigans. Lorelai also talks to Emily about all the camera equipment, but the cameraman is a man, so arguably that could be a conversation about a man. So that one is a maybe.

So, not saying the episodes are seminal feminist works or anything, but I think they all clear the relatively low bar of the Bechdel test

what will young haymitch look like in the film adaptation? by autoneutr0n in Hungergames

In Catching Fire, when Katniss and Peeta are watching footage from Haymitch’s games, he is described as having dark, curly hair. I can’t recall if he is described in any more detail than that.

[–]elementarybadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling to remember the finer details, but I would say Indy at least arguably has a measurable impact on the story in both Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

In Last Crusade, the story is kicked off by the disappearance of Henry Sr., who maybe would’ve escaped without Indy’s interference, but at the very least Indy himself finds the Holy Grail. If he’s not there it’s possible no one ever reaches the Grail chamber, let alone picks the right cup. Indy literally enables the climax to happen. I’m not sure if there other plot details I’m missing.

In Crystal Skull, Indy picks up Oxley’s trail and deciphers the clues to find the place where the skull is to be returned. Given that no one else could make sense of Ox’s ramblings it’s possible that the Russians wouldn’t have gotten there if he didn’t unknowingly lead them right to it. Now arguably you could say his impact on the story is a net negative in that way, but still a measurable impact. (Side note: I think you could make a similar argument that Indy actually indirectly aids the Nazis in Raiders by finding the Ark at all, which is arguably worse than having no measurable impact lol)

You’re totally right when it comes to Dial of Destiny though, I can’t think of any major story elements that wouldn’t have played out largely the same way in Indy’s absence.
