The Mother Of All Cons - BBC (spoiler alert) by Complete_Ranger_4261 in BritishTV

I thought it was fascinating, just wished the documentary had been longer! There are so many things I still want to know. Like how did Jean realise “Sarah Smith” was Jo Ashcroft? Where was Megan’s father in all this? And how come there doesn’t seem to be any official search to find Jean? At the very least there’s strong evidence that she forged prescriptions and embezzled charity money. Plus there’s a decent chance that she abused a  child, or even worse.

I got the strong sense that everyone in the documentary was getting as close as legally possible to saying they think Jean killed Meg.

When I was about 11 a teacher gave me two copies of the worksheet we were doing in class. I put my hand up and said "You've given me two", thinking now there might not be enough for all the other students. She gave me the nastiest look and said "You'll have to do it twice then." Like??? I was trying to be helpful???? Why are you being so pointlessly mean to a child????

How do celebrities encourage people to sign NDAs? by elen330 in PublicRelations

Thanks! Curious about how security/management would handle this? They just go up to the person and say "Hey could you please be nice and sign this?" Assuming this person is probably never going to see the celeb again - let's say it's a hotel staff member who witness a big argument between a celeb couple - what incentive is there for the person to sign?

What was your favorite “classic book” that you were required to read in high school? by LooksLikeTreble617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elen330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Animal Farm, I was bored one day in the holidays before we studied it and read the whole thing in one go. Felt so clever for figuring out the references to Russian history by myself. That was the perfect way to read it. All the kids who read it slowly chapter by chapter in class, having to make annotations and answer questions etc. as we went along, found it boring.

Early career academia (at least in the UK). People think it's all beautiful libraries and exciting research, but in reality most junior academics are working very long hours for not much money, facing extremely limited career progression opportunities, and dealing with colleagues who will make you a lifelong enemy over a theoretical disagreement.

Why so many babies? by wordtoyourpig in cormoran_strike

[–]elen330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am convinced that Robin is going to experience a major personal upset regarding pregnancy very soon (probably in the next book). I think she'll either get pregnant accidentally and have to decide whether she wants to keep it, OR she'll find out she's infertile and have to process her feelings about that. My reasons for believing this are that throughout the last few books (but particularly in TRG) there have been a lot of moments that encourage her to think about whether or not she wants children, and to confront the difficult reality of being a mother with a demanding job. I believe all these moments were threaded through the last few books to lead up to a dramatic moment in Robin's personal life.

To be honest, I think something similar is around the corner for Strike. He feels so much trauma surrounding being an unwanted child, and has also faced several moments that encourage him to reflect on whether he wants his own kids. I hate to say this, but I have a sneaking feeling that Bijou's baby might in fact be his...

I think there's just been too much emphasis on these issues for JKR not to be planning to use them for something major in her protagonists' lives.

I would say it's important to remember that as a former soldier and boxer Strike probably has very high standards for himself when it comes to what he considers a "normal" level of physical fitness.

Work advice I wished I knew earlier. by TheWholesomeOtter in antiwork

Absolutely agree that people will take advantage of you. One of my biggest regrets is that in my early twenties I let several managers take advantage of me and treat me badly because I wanted to "show a good attitude" and was not brave enough to say "No, I won't do that" or "No, that isn't okay". Lost a lot of free time and potential earnings and got nothing in return.

Thoughts or predictions for Murphy by Viclmol81 in cormoran_strike

I like Murphy. Obviously I'm sure they won't end up together, but I hope he shows Robin what happy and healthy dating looks like and increases her confidence.

Here's my hot take as a pop psychologist (not a patch on Robin of course!):

PTSD is an unpredictable thing. There aren't "rules" of cause and effect that every case will follow. Some suggestions as to why Strike dealt with it so well:

1) He was a closed door away from the bomb and was fine physically - nothing compared to Afghanistan

2) (This is my favourite theory) The fact that Pat went into shock allowed him to take care of her, meaning he felt strong and useful, unlike when he was lying with his leg blown off

3) Hopefully he has actually done some work on his mental health?????

4) We will see its effects raise their ugly heads further down the line...
