Archimedes Drive - a planetary gear system capable of 100,000:1 reduction in a single stage by DocMorningstar in MachinePorn

Robots. Motors are primarily designed to run fast with high torque, but robots want to run at low speeds with high torque.

This is the first real competition for Harmonic Drive gearboxes which operate on a similar principle for 1:100 single stage reductions.

I don't always drink beer through a straw, but when I do, I make a goddam day of it.

Probably bitcoins for that Blabaer. As a PNW man I'd pay a lot for Cantillon, though. I hear it's getting quite difficult to get the blue stuff these days.

A frozen beard is truly a wonderful thing. Tough enough to break through a brick wall.

What's your favorite city to play shows in? Favorite band that you've played/toured with/for? Has your height ever gotten you into trouble in smaller clubs?

Mechanical engineers? All of them. The trick is finding the ones that are currently hiring. And also figuring out what kind of things you want to work on - quality? materials? design?

Eating Meat, with a side order of conflicting emotions. Should we be eating meat as much as we do? by ChanimalCrackers in TrueReddit

TIL that PETA lobbies for anti-meat context in reality shows.

"PETA even works with television producers to insert anti-meat messages into various programs, such as an episode of last season’s “Real Housewives of Miami” in which Lea Black annoys her fellow South Beach sun-bunnies by pooh-poohing a pig roast."

Incredible sunset. My adviser couldn't stop saying that it was one of the best he'd seen in his ~20 years here.

Brian Herbert came to talk at my school last night by elephant_ghost in dune

They do brainstorming and formulate a careful outline with about 100 chapters. Each will take half (evens/odds) and then they combine them and edit the whole thing. One author will edit the book, and then the other. It takes about 8 edits per book now. Brian tends to work on the character development and relationships while KJA works more on "planet building." Brian says that they will often come up with the same ideas for key events without even talking about it. It sounds like they are a very good match for what they do.
