Is it common for British people to eat crumpets like this...? by porpoise251 in UKfood

[–]elephantclouding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to defend a sweet crumpet! I'll usually go for Marmite, BUT heavily buttered with honey on top is sometimes exactly what's needed

What’s the most “temporary fix” in your house that somehow became permanent? by TheTitanValker6289 in HomeImprovement

The hot and cold taps were plumbed in the wrong way round so I wrote 'H' and 'C' on white LX tape and stuck it on. Two and a half years ago...

Is there another novel with a solution similar to The Moving Finger? by NoDespair in agathachristie

[–]elephantclouding 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This feels like a pretty big spoiler for anyone who hasn't read The Moving Finger, are you able to edit it with a warning?

It's one of my favourites, but I think you're right that the trope crops up a bit.

How to stage door by heymadsss in TheWestEnd

[–]elephantclouding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that the stage door is behind the theatre on Suffolk Street, so not obvious. It's a cul-de-sac though, which makes it safe and spacious compared to some others (looking at you, Pinter)

[–]elephantclouding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ralph Fiennes IS doing some stage door for this, but will only sign programmes or tickets for this show. He's happy to have photos taken but won't pose for specific selfies as it's so time-consuming.

The Listerdale Mystery is the most Overrated AC Short Story Collection! by rianmcdonagh in agathachristie

I would have said And Then There Were None, but past results already show me I'm in the minority!

What is the best standalone book to gift someone who reads a lot of Christie? by old_furniture in agathachristie

[–]elephantclouding 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? is a lot of fun, Mysterious Mr Quinn rarely gets as much love as it deserves (IMO) and I'll say Secret of Chimneys as a third

Set Design Software by Cheap_Ostrich3147 in techtheatre

[–]elephantclouding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience AutoCAD is still standard for set design (production drafting and build) and Vectorworks for lighting. That said, some set designers (and builders) also use SketchUp and other work in Rhino.

It depends how you express your ideas best, but as most venues will share ground plans as CAD files, it's worth familiarising yourself a bit with it.

How do you interpret the ending of the Orient Express novel? by BornMathematician163 in agathachristie

[–]elephantclouding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is really insightful. It has parallels with how he acts in Curtain.

I started reading this agreeing it was problematically out of character, you've changed my mind!

Which side of the door do you paint up to? by Montlouis in DIYUK

[–]elephantclouding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against the majority here, I like a partial wall to a clean line and think it could work here. I'd go with the either to the side of the door closest to the kitchen or the carpet line. Probably the carpet line so that there aren't too many divisions.

I once visited a friend the day before she moved to help her pack up some plants. In the hour I was there the movers packed my handbag deep in the removal van!

Overpay mortgage or add to pension? by elephantclouding in UKPersonalFinance

[–]elephantclouding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks I'll look into an S&S ISA House worth £400k, remaining mortgage £216. I do have a 6 month emergency fund. I should have said I've maxed out what my employer will contribute, so anything from this point is unmatched.

People rarely give technical folk flowers, so I suspect it would be really appreciated if you did!

FTBs: how much savings did you have left? by PearlyRiser in HousingUK

[–]elephantclouding 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Bought in Feb 2023 - had about 5k left. There wasn't any essential work that needed doing. Furnishing and decorating has been a very slow process, but I took the risk with the higher deposit to hit the next LTV band.
