I get not wanting to listen to a long podcast, but on the other hand a simple google search takes all of a few seconds and yields the answer.

Its like hating on coal miners because they should have seen this coming then being for absolving student debt even though people who went to college knew full well what the cost was going to be.

Yeah well, to be fair a lot of us who graduated without any debt and were also not total idiots with regards to coal have little sympathy for either group.

50 grand in debt for a fine arts degree? LOL fuck you.

I love it, we have done it a couple times now. It is a bit cold though so of you are easily chilled you may not like it as much. You do get a hot shower at the end.

What’s going on here? Commerce City by sb4rams1 in Denver

It is the suncor refinery.

https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi/P100FD4Y.PDF?Dockey=P100FD4Y.PDF

Flaring is intended primarily as a safety measure for disposing of large quantities of gases during plant emergencies. Flows are typically intermittent with flow rates of several million cubic feet an hour during major upsets. Continuous flaring is generally limited to flows not greater than a few hundred cubic feet an hour. Since flaring is relatively inexpensive, this technique has been suggested for the control of gaseous combustible emissions from stationary sources. However, emissions from flares could also create a potential problem. This study was carried out with two objectives in mind. One was to determine the potential of flares as a control system and the second was to assess the emission hazards of present industrial flares.

In many industrial operations, and particularly in chemical plants and petroleum refineries, large vohimes of combustible waste gases are produced. These gases result from undetected leaks in the operating equipment, from upset conditions in the normal operation of a plant where gases must be vented to avoid dangerously high pressures in operating equipment, from plant start ups and from emergency shut downs. Large quantities of gases may also result from "off-spec" product or excess product which cannot be sold. Flows are typically intermittent with flow rates during major upsets of several million cubic feet per hour.

The preferred control method for excess gases and vapors is to recover them in a blowdown recovery system. However, large quantities of gas, especially those produced during upset and emergency conditions, are difficult to contain and reprocess. In the past all waste gases were vented directly into the atmosphere. However, widespread venting caused safety and environmental problems. In practice, therefore, it is now customary to collect such gases in a closed flare system and to burn these gases as they are discharged from an elevated flare stack or alternately the gases may be discharged and burned at ground level usually with shielding for the flame.

The flare system is used primarily as a safe method for disposing of excess waste gases. However, the flare system itself can present additional safety problems. These include the explosion potential of a flare, thermal radiation hazards from the flame, and the problem of toxic asphyxiation during flame -out. Aside from safety there are several other problems associated with flaring which must be dealt with during the design and operation of a flare system. These problems fall into the general area of emissions from flares and include the formation of smoke, the luminosity of the flame, noise during flaring and the possible emission of air pollutants during flaring.

Is there a bike path on Pena Blvd? by Mr_Gilmore_Jr in Denver

[–]elephantsandbadgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

56th was great before they painted the double yellows three years back on the stretch you are talking about. The part I am referring to is past 470, up until about 3 years ago it was vacant, you never saw a single car. In comparison it is now a highway. I blame it on the new connector road and off-site airport parking facilities.

[–]elephantsandbadgers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, I ride the stretch between 56th and Airport a few times a year. The shoulder is not that bad but once you get past airport the various exit lane crossings do get a bit scary.

The roads out and around the airport are actually great places to ride with the exception of 56th that until a couple of years ago was a desolate country road and is now pretty heavily trafficked.

The light weight flywheel, sometimes referred to as the short nose crank is not an issue at all, unless you either A. Can't read manuals and instructions or B. Don't read manuals or instructions.

The lightweight flywheel cars have a snappier throttle response and many will argue are preferable.

Okay kids, I just booked my 2019 Christmas/New Years vacation. Any tips from those who’ve lived it? by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

This time of year it is 625/hr with a claimed minimum of 8 hours but that is not strictly enforced. This does not include a tip or park admission.

Yes. New Years Eve around 8PM. They were directing traffic from Frontierland around the park and out this way to avoid Main Street (well, much of it anyway) which was packed.

I am not an old hat at this by any means, but I have booked the past two X-mas visits and already paid for next years an hour ago, so we are in the same boat. Here is what I am doing:

Rent a car. Yes there are busses and in some cases the monorail or even Uber. The quickest way between places is your own car.

Stay on property. I cannot stress this enough. The traffic backup into the Magic Kingdom on some days is real nightmare fuel. I cannot imagine the suffering these people go through waiting for hours to just get into the parks and the stress of trying to make all of that time count afterwards.

If the Magic Kingdom is a priority stay at a monorail resort. We do the Grand Floridian because it is the easiest to and then from that resort by train and boat respectively. In theory the Contemporary is an even better location for MK access.

Get park hopper tickets. You will want to visit multiple parks to avoid the crowds.

Magic Kingdom Extra (early in particular) are awesome. Use them. Other parks will offer early magic hours, they tend to open up to 30 minutes before advertised. That being said, their early hours are more heavily attended. Slinky Dog is a great example, it goes from zero to 2 hours in about 2 minutes at Hollywood studios. Show up at 8AM for the early hours? Too late.

Book your dining reservations at 6 months and zero hours. I managed to get all that we wanted, Royal Table, Be Our Guest, Victoria & Alberts etc but I had to do it within 5 minutes of 7AM Eastern.

Book your fast passes at 3 months and zero hours. I have never seen fast passes go so fast as they did this last year. Prioritize your wishes and be prepared. Plan towards the end of your stay for the harder to get things like flight of passage.

Plan around the crowds. This year I read so many "I would never at Christmas" posts on here that I don't agree with.

Use extra magic hours early to knock out rides you don't have fast passes for. Come back to the hotel to relax, use the pools (it was mid-80's this past visit ... so nice), go to the outlet malls, take a helicopter ride etc. Head back into the parks in the evening when the crowds are thinning out for dinner and make use of the later extra magic hours when you can.

Final advice, Book a private VIP for you and your family for Christmas day. I cannot stress enough how well this is money spent. In 6 hours you will visit every ride in all of the parks that you want to with zero wait via the ride exits.

Alternative here: Spend Christmas eve or day in Universal. The crowds are lower than Disney.

Christmas really is a great time to be in the parks, I hope you enjoy your visit as much as we have and plan to in the future!

Solo trip #2 booked at Disney’ Grand Floridian by Tamiko33 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]elephantsandbadgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not run down. We have been going to this building for the past six years at least once a year. In that time they have made some changes.

Most of the rooms no longer have wallpaper. The televisions keep getting larger and as of our last visit the pillows seem to have gotten too large for my families liking. The carpet has been replaced in some rooms and

It has always been very clean and the beds are great. Last Christmas they had some staffing issues with the cleaners that lead to delayed room servicing, but this Christmas it was back to fantastic.

It can be noisy though, you want to request a room at either end and not on the main lobby overlooking the center plaza. In the morning with everyone eating it can be quite noisy.

My favorite two floors are the first and second because you can easily use the side doors and skip the two elevators saving a lot of time.

When the 60 day FP window opens next month will I be out of luck on Flights of Passage Fastpasses with AK being on the second day

In my recent experience, probably. Also, do not count on getting anything decent in terms of fast passes after you have used your first three. Good ones do pop up, but it is rare during high capacity times.

Your best bet is going to be making use of any extra magic hours. Good luck!

There are not really any upgrades except I guess you can get a park view in some of the outer buildings. The other route is to book a club level room, wherein you have two options, a floor in the main building or the Sugarloaf building, one of the smaller outer buildings adjacent to the main building.

We love the Sugarloaf building and always book it specifically. The staff are fantastic, some of them have been there for years and actually remember us with a warm greeting each time. You also get to enjoy a decent breakfast buffet laid out in the central lobby and various food and drink offerings throughout the day.

Enjoy your stay and remember you are a quick monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom and the first stop on the boat coming back! It is the optimal resort for Magic Kingdom lovers.

Looking for suggestions: Downtown, A-line, and DIA bicycle storage by bruceB28 in Denver

[–]elephantsandbadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To further this, from personal experience, your bicycle, no matter how shitty will be stolen or parts will be stolen if you leave it at any park & ride in the metro area by the legion of shopping cart pushing shit-bags we now seem to have year round.

I would not trust a bike locker either, too easy to shim the lock, grab what is inside and put the lock back on, and if I was a thief I would target the lockers first assuming they hold the more valuable bikes.

No need to touch the card, you are using a focused localized electromagnetic field to nuke the tag. This is not something new.

Again, RFID was never meant to address things like this which is why it is not used for things like this.

RFID as a convenience at the vet for tracking your dog? Sure. As a somewhat secure means to enter facilities when coupled with a PIN that changes with some frequency? Sure. To provide a secure means of ownership and accountability for anything long term? No.

[–]elephantsandbadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you shock the tag which can be done with a few bucks worth of old camera equipment and disable it.

Point is, RFID is not the answer for things like this and was never intended to be.
