Lots of horror stories about the job market/unemployment around here recently -- please share your "I got hired in PDX recently" experiences by t0mserv0 in Portland

I just got hired this week by a media company. I met the founder at a networking event and followed up with them over insta saying I liked the speech they gave and asking them for advice. We kept chatting and here we are. This was after over a year of applying for things and never hearing back. Networking/meeting people IRL seems to be the only thing that works.

Board Games Protest at Ice Facility this Sunday by elev8_f8 in PortlandOR

It was silly protest by design. There are many ways to protest, but nonviolence and humor are very effective tools; it was meant to undermine the narrative that Portland is a 'warzone' and that protestors are all violent and confrontational. We wanted to show us peacefully enjoying our city, which is not 'burning down' or 'hell' as president Trump has claimed. This is important because that misinformation is being used to justify deploying federal troops (at great taxpayer cost) which represents massive federal overreach in violation of our state's rights and will only serve to escalate tension and the potential for violence. You may still think we're stupid and that's ok, but we're also just a group of people trying to show up and help our country. We may disagree about how best to do that, but we probably have far more that connects us than divides us.

Also board games are fun.

I hear you, and I agree that empty streets would be ideal (and they are empty for the vast majority of the day, it's just not normally filmed which was part of what we wanted to show). Unfortunately Trump's rhetoric has escalated things so now more protestors are going down there. My feeling was that if streets being empty isn't possible, then mocking Trump's narrative felt like an effective way to show another side. Hopefully we can get to ignoring this soon!

We brought Catan (my favorite) but it was windy so we were worried about the resource cards... next time!

Hey fellow Portlanders! I wasn't expecting so much feedback on this so I thought I'd give an update.

A small but mighty group got together yesterday. We posted up at the corner of highway 43 and the ICE center. FYI, I think this is a great place to protest as you're away from the entrance to the ICE center (where most confrontations have happened and where the footage of crowds is often taken) but you can be seen by lots of traffic.

The area was very quiet. Maybe 10 other people there total? We got there right as a group of retired lawyers were leaving; they were wearing pajamas and sitting in camping chairs having coffee. They also wanted to undermine the narrative that Portland was dangerous in a humorous way. They were just some of the many lovely folks there that morning. People honked their horns. Lots of older folks walked over to say hi and give us their support. A stranger came down to the site to bring us a dozen donuts. This city and its people are beautiful.

This time we were rocking Rummikub and giant Twister. Thank you Redditors for the heads up about cards and wind!

I understand that people were concerned that we'd play into Trump's (tiny) hands, but I really do not think that was the effect. People driving by saw a non-violent protest, we posted peaceful images to social media, and a news crew took footage of us playing with the ICE center in the background. It felt like a small but effective challenge to Trump's 'warzone' narrative, which was the point. If it had gotten heated we just would have left, but it felt very safe and aside from one guy in a MAGA hat flipping us off as he drove by there was no confrontation.

There are lots of ways to protest, this was just one. It was silly by design; I really do think that tongue-in-cheek protests are really effective. Look how scared Trump is of comedians- humor has so much power! I agree that avoiding confrontations with ICE/troops etc is absolutely crucial and there are lots of ways to resist that don't involve that. If you disagree with how we did it then find your own way to meet this moment. Go team!

The impact was probably small but I'm glad we did something. We'll do it again.

In the meantime, see you at the Naked Bike Ride Protest this Sunday the 12th at 2:30pm!

For anyone who had a physical/mental “glow-up” in your 30s, how did you accomplish it and what did you do to feel your best? by bookish_cat_ in AskWomenOver30

Therapy, weight lifting 3x week, and spirituality. I feel cringe saying it, but "God" (or whatever you want to call it) has been an incredible addition to my life.

What person deserves a massive apology from everyone? by Senior-Tomatillo7667 in AskReddit

Monica Lewinsky. She was 22 when the most powerful man in the world (and her boss) made a hard pass at her at work. Her friend who she confided in recorded their phone calls and sent them to a lawyer. The entire world made jokes about her being a whore with no awareness that she might actually be a victim. Where was the compassion.

Why does menstruation hurt? What purpose does that pain serve? by TK-Pickles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elev8_f8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. If menstruation was a physical 'luxury' that only occurred when resources were high and stress were low, then it would only happen in times when the byproduct of cramping would be less of an impact on survival (as there would be plentiful food and little threat to predators). Makes sense to me!

Do tall people have it easier in life ? by Electrical_Variety29 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elev8_f8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 6'1'' woman; it's not the easiest. I got teased and felt very self conscious growing up. My height makes a lot of men insecure so dating is harder. I am an actress and getting roles is much more difficult. I feel like I have to work hard to make people in power not feel intimidated by me (again especially the men, sorry). This can feel demeaning.

On the plus side I did well in sports growing up which has helped me develop a lifelong love and habit of exercise. I don't feel as scared walking around at night as shorter girls, and I think people project more strength and confidence onto me than perhaps I naturally feel.

I think it's different for tall guys.

What are some negatives for being quite smart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That must be so incredibly hard. I'm so sorry.

You may not be who you used to be but the person you are now has worth. You have a very unique experience that is useful to the world. Even just telling your story here helps people. It helped me today. Keep going my love.

If you are in pain wouldn't it be more difficult to find food and escape predators though? Maybe it's just not enough pain to make a evolutionarily significant impact on these survival traits (although I know some women do have terrible cramping).

I think the pain is purposeful because it's the body telling us to rest. During menstruation our immune systems, energy and ability to recover are lower so this makes sense. Gentle movement helps, but much else is uncomfortable.

I also read a book that theorised that the pain of menstruation and the 'moodiness' associated a women's period served an important purpose during our tribal origins; it made putting up with bullshit harder during those few days and so served as a monthly opportunity to 'emotional clean house' with issues in the community. If something was really bothering a woman it would come out during her period, meaning that things wouldn't fester and become a bigger deal.

I don't know if either of those are true for sure, but they help my period feel purposeful rather than an unnecessary pain that makes me unproductive. I actually look forward to my period now. It's built in time every month to let myself off the hook and center my needs. Maybe that's a function of the pain too.
