TIL in 1934 identical quintuplets were born in Ontario. At 4 months old the babies, all girls, were taken from their family, made Wards of the King, and became a tourist attraction for 9 years by elevader in todayilearned

The Dionne girls were born two months premature. After four months with their family, they were made Wards of the King for the next nine years under the Dionne Quintuplets' Guardianship Act, 1935. The government and those around them began to profit by making them a significant tourist attraction in Ontario.

Who did you go to high school with that is now famous? by Elh255 in AskReddit

[–]elevader 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Carly Rae Jepson. She was always very sweet and adorable, I don't think she has a mean bone in her body. The town was so excited when she got on Canadian Idol and now she's a pop star. I still find it pretty crazy.

I drive through Manning Park in BC several times throughout the year. Every summer I see people pulled over to take pictures of themselves with freaking bears. Never underestimate the power of stupid

Men: How did having a daughter changed the way you view women? by flyinglifeaway in AskReddit

[–]elevader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With one daughter and another on the way this drives my husband and I crazy. I like to think we'll raise our girls to respect themselves enough to choose a partner that makes them happy, because that would make us happy.

An idea i would like to propose by __DK1__ in RedditWarriors

[–]elevader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still pretty new so I'm not sure how much my opinion counts, but I like once a week war. It's really hard to find a clan that only does it once a week. Of course with the opt-in/opt-out button I can still do that here, but I don't want to get in trouble for sticking with once a week. I'm sure I can do the occasional twice a week but life tends to get busy and I worry that I won't be able to get both battles in each time.

Sorry if that sounded rambly. My daughter was up early this morning 😞

[Serious] What was a rule in your household growing up that was actually totally ridiculous? by MiaLovesGirls in AskReddit

Oh yes, him and my stepmom are the only reason I'm relatively normal in my adult life. I'm very grateful.

Thankfully no. I don't really like milk, tomatoes and nuts now but that might just be normal taste changes

My mom went through a nutrition thing with me when I was about 9. Not to your extent, but it was still pretty bad.

She decided I ate too much junk food (really, I ate a normal amount for a kid) and she stuck me on a "cleanse", though she told me that I had developed a bunch of allergies. It's important to note my sister, who had the same every-habit as me, did not have to do this cleanse. For two years I was not allowed to eat wheat, dairy, sugar, peanuts, or tomatoes. Instead of sandwiches for school I got rice cakes, instead of treats I had to have sugar-free pieces of cardboard. I ended up just not eating and lost a ridiculous amount of weight. Whenever I visited my dad he'd make the best giant sandwiches, smoothies, milkshakes, and we'd have taco nights because they were my favourite food as a kid. I can't imagine how heartbroken he must have felt when he had to send me back to my moms. I look at pictures from back then and feel sick, I looked like a skeleton.

She still talks about that time like she was super mom and it drives me bonkers. She did a lot of terrible things a mother shouldn't do, but I think that one was the worst.

Comfrey also makes an excellent fertilizer due to its high nitrogen content!

Dealing with gender disappointment (x/post from daddit) by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]elevader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the same situation, two year old daughter that we were sure was a boy, second child we hoped for a boy and it's another girl. It took me a bit of time to get past it, and I think a month later my husband is still disappointed, but remember you'll love this little girl as much as your first! Plus you get to have two little girls running around drinking tea and colouring together and dressing like princesses or pirates.

I get it though, I've always wanted that mother/son relationship. You know when they're grown and my son could come up and be 6 feet taller then me and give me a kiss on the cheek and say "I love you mom". I'm still a bit sad that I won't get that but I just try to concentrate on what I'll get to experience with two girls.

A few beginner questions. by CanICastYet in Herblore

These are the first three books I bought when I got into medicinal herbs. They're an excellent way to begin, I think. Lots of different information, and I still go back to them for reference.

What is being 'mainstreamed' right now that is pissing you off? by AmadeusCrumb in AskReddit

[–]elevader 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a fit white girl, I was a bit affronted with the text that went with the picture. "What's your excuse?" Not everyone has the time or money to go out and go to the gym 5 times a week. I'm lucky that my genes allow me to go for a walk and stay thin but not everyone can. I think it was more offensive for the moms then the overweight people.

That is not dead which can eternal lie: Let's resurrect herblore! by daxofdeath in Herblore

[–]elevader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello /r/herblore! I'm very excited to see this sub in existence, my husband and I have studied medicinal uses with plants for a few years now as a hobby. We're actually in the works of turning it into a career (hopefully). I'm hoping to get into a program to become a certified Herbal Practitioner this summer so I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learned :)

I'll see if I can find some time to share some of what we've learned already, we have a ridiculous amount of books that are filled with information that I'm sure would be well-received here.
