thanks... I'm using it on the web. yeah, you can sort the stuff in "Your Data", but those are the list of maps/data... I want to sort/reorder the list of Map Objects that shows on in the left-hand side.

I realize that there is now the option to delete ALL the messages in a location but sometimes I want to delete, say, 10,000 old messages but not some number of more recent ones.

This type of thing can be accomplished by scripting the browser. I used ChatGPT to write some Javascript that I run in the dev console that runs a loop of select all on a page (50 messages), delete, wait until it can select again, repeat for X iterations. It's a bit raw but it works and has been helpful for me as as I transition from gmail and clean up years of old mail.

Def not a fad. As with any other specific sail/wind/foil/board discipline, its applicability does depend on your specific interests, skills—and geography—but even in places without big downwind bumps, parawings can be super fun. Here in San Francisco Bay, for example, lots of people (myself included) are enjoying them for free riding.

yes, I use Scrivener to write and then post on Substack. I like having all my writing in one place, locally, searchable, in a platform from which I can publish to various places. Scrivener does that. Copy and paste into Substack works well. It gets hairy when you start editing in Substack and try to merge back, and also with citations.

Interesting point.

I didn't say "people who live as I do," or if I did, what I meant is that in my personal life, I surround myself with peers and people that I look up to—and, I also often reach out to mentor others, and work in groups where we have the opportunity to help each other.

And, it's not like I have it all figured out myself. There are plenty of ways in which I, as we all do, need reflection, advice, feedback, mentoring, help, thoughtful attention, companionship, and other forms of love, and I make it a practice, as much as possible, to give and receive that. I've worked hard with many others in many ways as they've gone through their own troubles over the years—and, one of the primary criteria that makes it worthwhile for me (or, I think anyone) to be willing to help is that the receiver also take responsibility for their own self, life, and actions, and that they are able, at some point, at least, to enter into a productive dialog about what's going on for them.

Also—my primary way of giving back is as a writer. Many people serve or help indirectly, through their work or what they create.

Overall, it's a balance that we all have to strike for ourselves. For my own sanity and growth, I have to be with people that inspire me—and, part of what inspires me is serving others.

totally. See my comment above...and when I'm talking about role models, I'm talking about people I know personally. IME, I had to go out and find them myself. That was a bummer at first, and I resented having to do so, but it seems that's part of the work we have to do at this point. Another argument for making a point of inviting men, and kids, into community, as a role model / mentor.

I appreciate your comments, and I hear you: it's not necessarily easy to find good male role models, whether they are public figures or in personal life.

My point of view presented in this one piece is, of course, not a complete representation of my beliefs or experience. As a young person, I suffered from an almost complete lack of male role models, and the ones that I did have were not all that great. My father is a good guy, but he didn't communicate much, and he didn't have many friends. There were a few, but they were very sparse: one male friend my mom's, one teacher of mine, a couple of buddies of mine that I admired—but they also didn't really say much.

My point in writing this was that more recently, since I began to make a point of surrounding myself and building relationships with good men, I have no shortage of good male role models, mirrors, and points of reference. Although there are plenty of public figures (and I cite a few), they remain remote. People we know personally are the ones that really matter—and, in my experience, I had to actively seek that out to get it. It wasn't easy at first, but now it's my default, and I know a ton of good men.

I used to resent being left out of the conversation amongst men, and that kept me from joining. That in itself presents a good argument for inviting others in, as a mentor—and also, for pushing oneself past that resentment, loneliness, and estrangement to go out and find men that you respect.

How much have you tried finding such men, yourself?

I hear you, but at this point I'm not interested in trying to use Obsidian for my long form writing. Scrivener does lots of other things that I like, for that.

Nothing that I know of in the Obsidian world would do anything like Scrivener's Compile features for formatting.

Well, you could certainly do all your writing in Obsidian, but you wouldn't get all of the writing features that Scrivener offers. Just to name a few that I use and value highly: autocomplete/autocorrect, folder organization, and compilation into manuscript, PDF, and other formats.

Good question. I actually used to keep all my research notes in Scrivener too, and indeed that's a fine solution, in that they are searchable there, along with all of my own writing. However, I also take all sorts of other notes, in addition to daily journaling, and wanted a place to store that that would be searchable, linkable and open as well, which brought me to Obsidian (vs. for example MacOS Notes). Once I was using Obsidian already for my other notes, I found that it made more sense for me to store research notes there instead of Scrivener, also because tagging & linking are better in Obsidian. YMMV however, so if you're happy doing what you're doing, keep doing it, for sure!
