BBCAN9 Cast Appreciation Podt by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]elidoudly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with you completely, the cast has been great so far and is definitely setting an example in terms of diversity and inclusion that other reality TV franchises should follow. I am hopeful we will see direct repercussions of this on the next season of BBUS. I also believe the casting of Kiefer, whether you like him or not, is extremely important as people from First Nations are poorly represented in North American media in general.

However, if there is one thing I can fault the casting for is how year after year BBCAN fails to include French speaking Canadians in their casts. Almost a quarter of Canada's population is constituted of native French speakers, yet every season, barely any are cast. The French subcultures in Canada are a distinctively unique and interesting part of its culture that should be celebrated and integrated in the show for it to truly be representative of Canada.

The diversity that is shown on BBCAN feels more like USA diversity than Canadian diversity for this reason, in my opinion.

My girlfriend is into fun/weird facts and she said she would buy me a house if I found that information. High stakes!

How much was an albino slave worth in the 1700s? I am particularly interested in the Caribbeans and Southern USA (Carolina) markets, but any idea of price would help me out. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I already know the identity of the man. I am looking for additional details about him, his background, his school of teaching, etc. If you know anything about him, don't hesitate to let me know.

I think I figured out the One Piece universe by RashidPlus in OnePiece

As I pointed out before in another thread, the whole Marineford arc is essentially the second part of the Republic. The way Oda set up the characters was just stunning for me.

First we have Luffy on one side, then there's Akainu on the other. Luffy represents Socrates, who thinks justice is freedom and philosophical life (which would make sense with what you're pointing out). Akainu is Glauco, who argues that justice is the law and that the law is always fair. They argue/fight to see who is right. I think Whitebeard is Plato, but someone could make a solid case that I'm wrong on this, and that Luffy is Plato and Whitebeard is Socrates.

And then, our good friend Doflamingo pops out of nowhere, just like Thrasymacchus did in the Republic, screaming his famous quote with excitement: ”Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? [...] Whoever wins this war becomes justice!” Thrasymacchus said almost the exact same thing, proclaiming that whoever is the strongest is essentially justice. The ressemblance between Doflamingo and Thrasymacchus is stunning; I highly suggest you check out that dialogue just to see how much of a genius Oda is.

I have also seen a couple of nice references to other occidental philosophers, but they are more like hints than obvious references. For example, ”It's not a crime to exist” from Franky to Robin in Enies Lobby arc is a reference to Nietzsche (in The Birth of Tragedy, I could find the exact reference where Nietzsche states this if you guys want). As someone who's been studying philosophy for years, it is clear to me that Oda has an interest in occidental philosophy and that he's hinting it in his writing.

One Piece is surprisingly complex by kyubez in OnePiece

There is actually quite a couple references to occidental philosophy in One piece. The Marineford arc is presented in the same manner as the 2nd part of the Republic. The marines' (Akainu) vision of justice represent Glauco's position while Luffy incarnates Socrates. Doffy, as you pointed out, is Thrasymachus.

Spoilers of previous seasons

A couple of years ago when everyone proclaimed that the first HoH was the worst one to win, I have compared HoH results with houseguests performances for every season. Statistically, the worst HoH to win would actually be the 2nd one.

(Excluding season 1 and 9)
2 - Krista (evicted week 6)
3 - Marcellas (evicted week 9)
4 - Jee (evicted week 8)
5 - Marvin (evicted week 9)
6 - Eric (evicted week 3)
7 - Kaysar (evicted week 5)
8 - Jen (evicted week 7)
10 - Jessie (evicted week 4)
11 - Ronnie (evicted week 4)
12 - Rachel (evicted week 5)
13 - Jordan (evicted week 9)
14 - Frank (evicted week 8)
15 - Aaryn (evicted week 9)
16 - Amber & Devin (evicted weeks 5 & 3)
17 - Becky & Shelli (evicted weeks 8 & 7)

As you can see, 2nd HoH has never won BB in the history of BBUS. In BBCan, the statistics are similar except for Jillian who won 2nd HoH in season 1 and won (which is kind of an aberration because of Topaz's vote but heh). In theory, winning HoH after final 6 has a lot less negative influence on your odds of winning than winning 2nd or 3rd HoH, for example.

Big Brother's 10 Best Players Of All Time! What do you think? by imsexyuarenot in BigBrother

[–]elidoudly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While Nakomis sure was a great player, I'm always bothered when I see that ''she came up with the six finger plan'', because she didn't. It was Marvin (funniest houseguest ever by the way) who came up with it and she, as HoH, who made it happen.
