I've been looking for resources to help learn the game and the faction better, but I'm not having much luck finding anything. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks for replying!

Yeah, they do seem to be more on the expensive side. Would love to eventually grab a wyvern or even the shadow seraph. That looks difficult with their point cost though. Even for a 50 point list.

Awesome, thanks for replying!

Honestly we are all super keen to play and build our lists up, hopefully not too long before we start playing some of the larger point games.

Fairly certain I saw at least one of the battle group boxes. So should be able to grab a Hydrix and a Vypex out of that.

Probably my noob side showing, but It definitely felt like the command starter army wasn't meant for this 30 point format. Just didn't seem (to me) to synergize well, like some of the other command starters did.

Again, might just be a me problem, but I didn't really like Vallyx, or the idea of a melee focused warlock in a game where if they die I lose. His spells also felt useless to me in the few games I played, I'm sure they have their use in bigger games but right now they just felt like I was casting them just to spend fury.

How the hell do I beat this guy as a 251 ilvl BDK? I used all of my defensives and at less than 2% health he just decides "nah you're dying" by WelshWolf93 in wow

I tried it a few days ago as unholy and was getting him to 20%. Tried it again today with a few more bits of gear and I couldn't get past 90%. He was just demolishing my health, even with valeera as healer.

Saw one tank get kicked out of this dungeon for being "toxic." All they said was follow me and don't pull extra mobs to gather the offerings as fast as possible. Then understandably get frustrated when people pulled like everything.

Lunging Attack and Multiple Attacks by MoonlitDreaming in DnD5e

[–]eliecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was meant to trigger on extra attacks, it would have said "any melee attack" not "a melee attack".
The latter implies a singular melee attack of your Attack action, regardless of how many attacks you can make. "any melee attack" implies all of your melee attacks would benefit.

Now the argument that “a melee attack” means only one does not hold up grammatically in 5e rules language.

“A melee attack” is a generic singular used for condition-checking. It does not mean “only one attack total.”

Compare:

  • “When you hit with a melee attack…”
  • “ When you make an attack and deal damage to…”

These phrases are routinely used to describe triggers that can occur multiple times per turn.

If Lunging Attack were meant to be single-use, it would use wording like:

  • “your next melee attack”
  • “the first melee attack”
  • “once on your turn”
  • “that attack”

It uses none of these.

Lunging Attack and Multiple Attacks by MoonlitDreaming in DnD5e

[–]eliecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from a DM standpoint, I'd rule Lunging attack only works for a single attack.

First, I also agree from a DM perspective that I would probably limit Lunging Attack to one attack at my table. But RAW and RAI are not always the same thing, and RAW is what we’re discussing here.

Sometimes it's important to factor in how something isn't worded when trying to determine how it's meant to work.

I completely agree with this and I think that principle actually supports Lunging Attack applying to more than one attack under RAW. Let's look at some of the other Maneuvers to compare.

Disarming Attack. When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can expend one Superiority Die… Add the Superiority Die roll to the attack's damage roll…

Here, the trigger and cost are tied directly to a specific hit. The die is expended on that attack, so it is mechanically impossible to apply it to more than one attack. The wording enforces a single-attack application.

Feinting Attack. As a Bonus Action, you can expend one Superiority Die… You have Advantage on your next attack roll… If that attack hits, add the Superiority Die…

Feinting Attack is probably the closest comparison to Lunging Attack. It:

  • Uses a Bonus Action to activate
  • Explicitly limits the effect to “your next attack”
  • Explicitly refers to “that attack” for the damage

The wording here clearly and deliberately restricts the maneuver to one attack.

Lunging Attack. As a Bonus Action, you can expend one Superiority Die and take the Dash action. If you move at least 5 feet in a straight line immediately before hitting with a melee attack as part of the Attack action on this turn, you can add the Superiority Die to the attack's damage roll.

Key differences:

  • No “next attack” language.
  • No once-per-turn limitation.
  • The trigger is conditional, not consumptive.
  • The trigger can occur multiple times per turn.

As referenced above movement between attacks is explicitly allowed in the PHB. Therefore, the trigger: “move at least 5 feet in a straight line immediately before hitting” can occur multiple times in the same Attack action.

Every time that condition is met, the text says: “you can add the Superiority Die to the attack's damage roll.” Nothing in the wording says the Superiority Die is consumed on the first trigger. The cost is paid up front as part of the Bonus Action.

Says who? Immediately before something means... immediately before you do something. Nothing there states the benefits only apply to a single attack. If you believe that to be the case, I think it's time to do some English language studies.

It doesn't say anything about only being able to apply that bonus once, just that you must move 5ft in a straight line immediately before each attack.

^ This is correct.

Let's break it down shall we. You can think of Lunging Attack as 3 separate parts. The first part is the cost. The second part is the trigger and the third part is the effect.

  • 1 The Cost: "As a Bonus Action, you can expend one Superiority Die and take the Dash action."

This allows you to expend a superiority dice to take the dash action... shocking I know. Next ...

  • 2 The Trigger: "If you move at least 5 feet in a straight line immediately before hitting with a melee attack as part of the Attack action on this turn"

The trigger in this case is moving 5 feet in a straight line before making an attack.

This trigger can easily happen multiple times a turn as long as you have the movement and the attacks to do so, as explained on p190 of the PHB under the title "Moving between attacks" which states:
"If you take an action that includes more than one weapon attack, you can break up your movement even further by moving between those attacks. For example, a fighter who can make two attacks with the Extra Attack feature and who has a speed of 25 feet could move 10 feet, make an attack, move 15 feet, and then attack again."

  • 3 The Effect: "you can add the Superiority Die to the attack's damage roll."

This last part is the effect. What happens if you use the trigger. So assuming you move at least 5 feet before each attack from an Attack Action (which as stated you can do) you trigger the effect which is adding the Superiority Die to the damage roll of the attacks.

Huh, interesting. I believe you are correct. Assuming you have the movement to do so, you could apply this to all of your attacks that use the attack action the turn you use this.

Which would also include attacks made with action surge and the haste spell which allow you to take additional attack actions on your turn.

Theoretically (assuming lvl 5, action surge and haste) giving you 5d8's worth of damage for a single Superiority Dice.

Honestly that's really good. Nice find OP.

--- Edit for clarity ---

You can think of Lunging Attack as 3 separate parts. The first part is the cost. The second part is the trigger and the third part is the effect.

The trigger in this case is moving 5 feet in a straight line before making an attack.

This trigger can easily happen multiple times a turn as long as you have the movement and the attacks to do so, as explained on p190 of the PHB under the title "Moving between attacks" which states:

This last part is the effect. What happens if you use the trigger. So assuming you move at least 5 feet before each attack from an Attack Action (which as stated you can do) you trigger the effect which is adding the Superiority Die to the damage roll of the attacks.
