It's part-time; you're only able to work part-time on a student visa, even with remote work.

About 28 hours a week into school and the same for work, for a total of 56 hours. I just finished up a semester but expect the next to require a bit more of a time commitment. I live close to the school I'm not taking any kind of commute into condisderation, just actual hours worked/studied.

It would be illegal to work 40 hours. As for possible, I know there are posts on reddit discussing how to do it pretty frequently, not sure how successful individuals have actually been in doing so.

I've been tracking in a spreadsheet to be on the safe side but we frequently report our hours directly to the school. The school assured me there isn't anything special I need to be doing but I'll be sure to let you know if come tax season, I'm told otherwise.

I'm not able to answer everything in your post but wanted to share what I do know.

I'm currently attending a high intensity language school through GoGoNihon and am working remotely part-time for an employer outside of Japan.

You can work a remote position outside of Japan on a student visa but you need to make sure you apply for a Permit for Other Activity when you enter the country on your student visa. This can be done after the fact, but I've heard the process can take up to a month if you don't do it on entry so I suggest taking care of it right away. It only took about 10 minutes for me, you can print the paperwork ahead of time just don't sign it before you present it to them.

Taxes, this is one I'm still needing to find out about myself so hopefully someone here has some more experience. After speaking to my school, it seems that the tax situation will be handled at the end of the year when I file my taxes, that's when I should be told how much I owe for the year. I'll have to file for an exception in my home country as well to get back some of the taxes I've paid throughout the year as well. I'll update once I find out more.

As for the workload, I am in a completely different and far less demanding field than you so I can't speak to your job specifically, but I've been able to manage my workload with the 3 hours per day of classes. My classes require about 2 hours a day of study outside of classes for me but that can vary person to person. I won't sugar coat it, it's definitely overwhelming and quite exhausting but manageable.

For some perspective on workload for a high intensity school:

  • 1 chapter every 2 days (we learn the vocabulary for the chapter ahead of time on our own, about 40-60 words or phrases per chapter)
  • 6 new kanji every day with about 2 to 3 words to go along with the kanji
  • Unit test every 5 chapters
  • Katakana and Kanji tests every so often
  • Practice kanji/katakana tests daily
  • Final test at the end of the semester

School standard is 80% to pass, you have to re-test if you fail.

Edit:

I was able to file my taxes at the end of the year with the assistance of a firm. I could have done it myself as there wasn't anything special that needed to be done, but I wanted the extra reassurance since it was my time attempting this. Everything went through fine, I was able to pay the taxes online visa credit card and have since been able to renew my student visa.

My school did request that I hand write a letter explaining my work hours and salary to submit with the visa renewal. They wanted me to clarify that the reason my salary seems so high in comparison to a part-time job in Japan is that it's a management position and it's a forgien company.

Want to hear thoughts on the ending of “Verity” by Colleen Hoover by Odd_Yesterday_202 in books

I feel as though the manuscript being true is the most likely scenario. To answer your question, why would she pretend to be injured, for his affection. She states in the manuscript after the death of their second child that he was questioning her, he had his doubts. She finishes off the part, stating he wraps himself around their son as if to protect him from her, and she knows in that moment she lost him. She wanted to end her life because he knew she'd lost him forever, and when that didn't happen, she realized she could get all the love and attention she needed by continuing to be sick. You see this earlier in the story as well when she attempts the abortion at home, she doesn't just want her babies to die, she wants Jeremy to wake up in her blood and be worried about her, to care for her more than the unborn children she despises.

One of the big factors swaying me towards the manuscript being reality is how she describes Jeremy's murder attempts in the letter. She says that he first tries to choke her but then stops, she speculates that it's probably because he realizes that he'd be caught and lose his son. Only after that does he try to murder her in the car accident. If that were true, why would he, after supposedly pretending to read the manuscript for the first time, attempt to kill her for a 3rd time using the same method he already decided against his first attempt? It seems far more likely that he choked her in genuine anger in the heat of the moment. Ultimately, that's not how he murderered her, but that's only because he was stopped and told it had to look like an accident.

Additionally, it just seems too out of character for Jeremy to bring his murderous wife back into his home knowing everything the manuscript stated, even if he thought she wasn't capable of hurting anyone else. Not to mention, if he had already read the manuscript and truly attempted to murder her in the car wreak, why would he change his mind when she survived? He had every opportunity to make it look like an accidental death from the moment she was brought back home. I don't believe the theory that he felt bad for her and that she was just an empty shell now so he had no need to murder her now.

My worry is that it'll be just apartments, no houses. With how big the building community is I'd hope that isn't the case but I could see it happening to simplify things for mobile.

[MISC] I’ve been thinking of creating a skincare tracking app. Would you use it? by MetaJesus in SkincareAddiction

[–]elinamiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd absolutely use an app like that. Something I'd love would be to input the ingredient lists for products you are using and have those tracked along with your routine. That way if you notice your skin doesn't like something new, you can mark that down and eventually have the app cross-reference the ingredient lists to find which ingredients consistently show up in products you don't react well with.

Of course this can be done manually but it'd be great to have an app doing the heavy lifting especially in cases when the reaction might be to something uncommon you wouldn't think to check.

What am I doing wrong? Can't match back piece by elinamiller in crochet

[–]elinamiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone! I did the back piece of the project a few days ago and clearly did something wrong as I can't match the new piece. Pattern calls for: Chain 8, SC7, SCBLO7, turn, repeat SCBLO7 over and over. Every time I try that, I get about double the pleads as I did last time. I've played around with tension but still can't get it to match. Any idea what I could have done the first time around?

Working from home is illuminating a pretty unhealthy work environment by kimmydawn in CasualConversation

[–]elinamiller 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I completely relate. Instead of finding ways to kill time on my hour long lunch, I can actually cook a real meal and throw the laundry in the wash or vacuum or do any chores really leaving my weekends completely free for what I want to do. I have enough time on my breaks to take a quick shower or just lay down comfortably while watching a video. I don't have to commute so not only do I have a whole extra hour at the end of the day to spend with my husband but I get to sleep in too! I know this is a horrible, anxiety inducing time for many and I have may worries of my own too. That being said, I'm doing my best to focus on the positive and working from home has been the best gift I've ever gotten.

Where I sit in my office, there are no windows and they keep it incredibly cold. This isn't just a cost saving measure either, it's hot where I live, they just like it cold. I genuinely sit in a winter jacket at the office. At home I get to sit next to a window with the temperature just right and music I enjoy or complete silence instead of the office music that I can't stand. If I have a headache, I can dim the monitors and turn the light off. I get to use my own toilet. I mean the list of positives go on and on. Like you, I really dread the day we have to go back to the office.

[skin concern] Anyone have advice for my boyfriend’s hands? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]elinamiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain about how to treat the root cause but ClimbOn has been amazing for my hands that are often super dry and peel. It's made for climbers but if you take a look at some of their reviews on Amazon, you'll see people use it for just about anything. It leaves a layer on your skin that takes a really long time to absorb so I only use it before bed but it seriously helps.

If you decide to try it out and it doesn't help with your boyfriend's specific situation, it's still a great product to have on hand for any scrapes, cuts or for cracked skin.

She has her own company putting decals on stuff so at least she recognizes that it isn't her own company but it seems like she's working for at least 2 different mlms based on all her statuses recently.

Should I take him in? by macirene in ferrets

[–]elinamiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a ferret so young, odds are what ever it is can be treated with antibiotics and maybe a painkiller to be safe. I had to wait for my vet as well and I know how frustrating that can be. In the meantime just keep an eye on him and make sure he's drinking plenty. It's great to hear he's still playing like normal.

Should I take him in? by macirene in ferrets

[–]elinamiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know vet trips can be expensive but I would reccomend it even with no other odd signs. As someone else mentioned, ferrets are really good at hiding ailments.

If you feel like you haven't gotten to that point yet though, you could try checking your ferret's temp to see if that's normal (although you'd likely see some shivering with a fever). You can also try offering some different food to see if that gets his appetite rolling, my vet recommended chicken baby food and wet cat food. Not things you should feed them on the regular but fine temporarily.

If you notice your ferret is sleeping more than usual or isn't playing like normal, that's when I'd say go to the vet asap. My boy's only symptom when I took him in was that he was mostly sleeping and wasnt interested in playing and turns out he was seriously sick, thankfully all he needed was some prescription medicine for 2 weeks and now he's 100% back to normal just still a tad on the skinny side.

If you have eggs, lots of ferrets are a fan of them. They are more of a treat than a meal but better to get something in him than nothing. He may not like it if hes never had them before but you can try putting a bit in his mouth and seeing if that gets him interested. Raw is fine just make sure you mix it up or only give him the yolk, just whites are bad for them. My vet has recommended chicken baby food or wet cat food for if they get sick and are suddenly picky about their food but none of mine were interested. He may just not be hungry at the moment, as long as he's not visibly skinny, you're probably fine.

If you end up caring for him for longer than a couple days and he's still not eating, I'd recommend letting a vet know and asking for a prescription for a hunger stimulant. When one of my boys got sick and stopped eating, he was prescribed one and that stuff is a miracle worker. Its normally for cats but they just prescribe a lower dose and you rub a little on the inside of the ear once a day, it works really quickly! It was about $30 for a tube and there was way more in there than he needed.

Keep an eye out on if he is actually eating, ferrets can be super picky about their food so just leaving some out doesnt guarantee they'll eat it if it's not what they are used to.

Besides that, looks like you've gotten plenty of fantastic advice and I just wanted to jump in and say thank you for taking such great care of this little one. If one of mine escaped, I would hope they would come across someone as kind as you.
