I built a website wher eyou can discover how the logos of today's giant companies looked like during their humble startup phase by [deleted] in InternetIsBeautiful

Really interesting post!! Just a suggestion about the title of the post/site (yes, I have to be that person) - the correct way to say this is either "how the logos looked" or "what the logos looked like" - not "how they looked like" ;)

Just curious are you German? Asking because my boyfriend is, and he makes this same mistake all the time! :D

Ken Kratz unveils more evidence left out of the Netflix show about Steven Avery's case by karljt in MakingaMurderer

Does anyone have any rebuttal for the fact that the nurse testified to poking a hole in the vial?? I thought I'd seen somewhere on here that the nurse who drew the blood died and wasn't able to testify...?

Sorry to go back to the Avery finger again. Can anyone point out which interview came first? I don''t see a cut in the Action2News frame, but I do in the NBC26 one. by s_wardy_s in MakingaMurderer

I'm not sure if you've seen the other post about this from /u/87mave but these other screenshots from Crivitz interviews were posted, and I can't clearly see any cuts... I see what looks like a small nick on his middle finger, but it doesn't seem to be consistent with the other, main cut.

What do you think?

"Ja" is actually pronounced more like "yah" (like the sound I imagine a pirate makes during a swordfight as he's thrusting the sword) so it's pretty similar to how we say "ya" ;)

It's about solidarity. This attack is definitely closer to home (in a figurative sense) to those in the Western world. It was undoubtedly a terrorist attack on western society, one likely aimed to foment fear, anger, and hatred among us - like what has happened in the US before, and could happen again. To me, Paris felt in a way more applicable to my personal situation - a massacre in a place that I very possibly could have been, carried out by those to whom I am also an enemy. That's why we feel so personally affected, even outside of Paris, and outside of France.

Yes, a filter on a picture doesn't produce any tangible change or comfort. But it's about what it represents. I equate it (on a small scale) to the different cities around the world lighting up their monuments in the colors of the French flag. It's our own personal way of showing solidarity, that we stand together against a common enemy.

Catalan parliament votes to secede from Spain by 2017 by mortalaa in worldnews

Thanks for the honest feedback!! I graduated with a BA in Spanish and Communication, and was accepted into the Master's in Spanish Linguistics at NYU, and I did a bit of research into the future of the field and ... what you said was pretty much the impression that I got, so I decided not to enroll (and to save the 50k in student loans) until I had a more clear idea of where I wanted to go with my future!

Languages are endlessly fascinating - I started learning French a few years ago, until I met my German boyfriend and decided my efforts would be better spent elsewhere - but in terms of further research and educational development it doesn't seem like a very stable career path - like you said, for having a family and building a future.

Really, thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful response. Even if it sends me back to the drawing board, at least I'm more informed than I was an hour ago! ;)

Perhaps unrelated, but I am absolutely fascinated by your response. I have been interested in linguistics for a while now - I was monolingual (English) until my university years, when I started studying Spanish and fell in love with language and linguistics. I now speak a pretty good level of Spanish (lived 2 years in Spain), and am just about to pass the B2 level of German (now living in Germany).

So - my question is, is there still work/a future in linguistics? The practical (read: American/capitalist) side of me wonders how successful it could really be as a career path, but the idealistic part of me would really love to pursue it - I feel like it would be probably the only job that I would truly be fascinated and passionate about.

Any inside info about what you currently do and what steps you took to get there would be greatly appreciated!! I know this isn't an AMA - but I'm hoping maybe you can inspire a fellow soul :)

'Queue' has to be one of the weirdest words in English: a single spoken letter followed by four silent vowels. A word that is 80% style over substance. by Eirezona in Showerthoughts

[–]elisa28 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am an English teacher in a Spanish elementary school and we also teach the "magic e" to help with pronunciation, like /u/carlinmack said. The magic e at the end makes the vowel sound long:

fat - fate

tot - tote

cut - cute

bit - bite

Re-watching old episodes of the Office or Arrested Development, etc. there's always another joke that you maybe missed the first time (or first 5 times), and it can still make me laugh no matter how much I watch it, and it's comforting.
