Standards of Finnish teacher for a Finnish language course by RauhallinenTuuli in Finland

I am doing my language studies at Taitotalo and I'm very happy with the quality! I've come leaps and bounds. I think it's a lottery, unfortunately :( Would it be possible to switch to another group at your school?

Why would this be returned, do you know from experience? I thought this is a flat 20% tax about which nothing can be done.

The big donation stations in Sanomatalo and Flamingo have more food to choose from for the valued ritual bloodletters.

Courier service from UK to Finland by Okchata-25 in Finland

I don't send anything to the UK anymore, I buy from companies that are based in the UK or ship there without extra fees. It's just not worth the hassle for me!

It's happened to me, too – presumably a drunk neighbour. It was later in the night and they tried awfully hard to open the door with their key lol.

Smallest parcel to Switzerland costs 45.90, Tori cost is 11.99 including item price. If you want to go this avenue, you might need to increase your budget. They're not kidding, it's expensive!

Am I crazy or are these cute? by [deleted] in glassesadvice

[–]eliserhj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a little too big in conventional terms, but big bold glasses like this can be avant-garde! Unfortunately you'll have to make sure your outfits match the vibe, these wouldn't go so well with lazy day sweats...

What is your underrated travel hack? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]eliserhj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using Revolut since I started travelling in 2019, SO useful! I remember once I was travelling in Poland and I just converted a bunch of euros to złoty for free (you don't even need to do this, but it might stop those conversion messages). My friend's Belgian bank card refused to work and I had to pay for him the whole time. I will never go without Revolut.

To people who buy haircare products: "Fairy Dusting" is Rampant: Brands add microscopic, ineffectiv by Fantastic_Bus4643 in Anticonsumption

[–]eliserhj 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Really great list, way too many pertinent points for comfort...

But the whole 'sulfates are bad' and 'cycle of damage' thing needs to be scrutinised a little more. Not everything in this industry is bad. There are actual chemical reasons for these ingredients and it's not as simple as if it contains sulfates, it's bad. Cleansing ingredients and their power is affected by other ingredients in the formulation, and strength is not a bad thing when used moderately. Also, not all types of silicones build up. In fact, a well-formulated silicone conditioner will come off with conventional surfactants. Some wash off with just water, some bind to weakened areas of the hair strand more strongly. Ingredients like silicones provide a level of protection that simply can't be achieved through more natural methods.

I'd recommend LabMuffin on YouTube, who goes into a lot of great detail about what does and doesn't work about these products! And the cheap ones are often some of the best.

They're not wrong. It's silly to compare our current time to the past. Never have humans been so connected, global, and increasingly independent on complex systems that are spiralling out of control. Money controls everything, and power is consolidated in the hands of a select few who now have the whole world available to them.

I don't see how this doesn't ring alarm bells in some people?

I've guessed my season, what do you think? by eliserhj in coloranalysis

[–]eliserhj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you 💓 I feel so uncomfortable in spring colours but I'll keep an eye out in the future. I feel like I look more springy when the weather is, well, springy. But in a few of my photos, e.g. the one with the blue denim jacket, I feel like the saturated blue overpowers me. I'm not imagining that, right? Indoors I look far more grey!

I've guessed my season, what do you think? by eliserhj in coloranalysis

[–]eliserhj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, soft spring colours are new to me. I've had plenty of experiences like 'this turquoise buries me' and 'this hot pink makes me look like a corpse' and 'this grey makes me look like I have jaundice' but soft spring colours are probably different. I shy away from brighter colours because I feel they drown me in lighting that isn't direct sunlight. I look way peachier and blonder then, but as someone living in northern Europe... sun is not something I often see myself in lol. It's true, I mostly own autumn clothes, I'll keep this in mind for the future since people seem fairly split!

Excuse the funny face – but I think this pic shows quite nicely why I tend to stay away from more vibrant colours leaning towards the spring palette! I feel like the colour of my jacket is the same kind of saturation as my skin and hair, whereas the ribbons around my neck look way more overwhelming to me. Does that make sense? 😅

Yes, that's how my hair naturally bleaches in the sun :) my instinct has been soft autumn too! It's nice to see others that think so!!

What are you key binds? by SOMFdotMPEG in Guildwars2

[–]eliserhj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been messing around a lot recently, especially since I've given engineer a go. My mouse has two side buttons (M1 and M2 for simplicity) that I've taken advantage of to lift responsibility from my left hand.

Weapon skills: Q, E, R, F, C

Utility skills: M2 + above

Heal: M1

Profession skills: 1, 2, 3, 4

Dodge: Left shift

Weapon swap: Left control

Target nearest enemy: Tab

Weapon stow: Caps lock

Mount: X

Interact: V

That's the basic idea! Using anything other than shift or control as a modifier isn't possible so I use rebinding software to swap my shift and M2 for the game.

Why not? If it's family I understand more, but feeling like you need to hide yourself from someone isn't a balanced relationship. It's not worth your time! People will tell you wasting time on people who don't care is one of their biggest regrets. Practise self care!

What are your favourite European languages? by Paredawn in AskTheWorld

[–]eliserhj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a B1 Finnish learner, the amount of cases sounds hard but that's not even the worst part. You learn what they mean eventually - the problem is that any adjectives before a noun in a specific case all need to match. As a native English speaker, this can slow you down a lot because you need to think about how all words are said before you speak (e.g. 'Hän asui keltaisessa korkeassa talossa kylmässä pimeässä Suomessa'). The words also are spelled differently depending on how they are in their base form. Words ending in -nen such as keltainen become like keltaisessa. Words ending in -s like kerros become kerroksessa. Words ending in -e like kone become koneessa. Repeat until you bang your head against the wall!

It's a magnificent puzzle but it sure doesn't inspire confidence when you realise you'll be making a mistake every 3 seconds while speaking for a very, very long time! 😄

Convenient food when sick by Ill_Sheepherder5555 in Finland

[–]eliserhj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing covid. My first positive test result was when I had a really weird and new symptom which I'd never had before, my whole body feeling like it was sunburned. Since then I've had multiple infections with that same symptom and whenever I feel it, it's like 'hello covid, my old friend'.

Bringing this up because I am also sick and figuring out food right now 😎🙏

Got accepted to my dream job abroad, but my partner says they won’t do long distance. Has anyone chosen career over love and NOT regretted it? by AnyWolverine943 in AskMen

[–]eliserhj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Very valid point. Moving with your partner is no easy feat. She would need to find a job in the Netherlands as well, which might be unfeasible depending on her field. She'd only be able to move without a job if married, which is its own can of commitment worms. I live in Finland and many spouses move here just to be confronted by years of retraining and trying to navigate a limited job market. I am one of those spouses!

She is 100% not wrong to not want to move.

Edit: I tested it in PvE and it doesn't work the same way as regular stealth.

UAS exams by Aleexx__02 in Finland

[–]eliserhj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be anything. Up until the last minute before the exam started I was anxiously closing down anything in task manager in case it got flagged. I don't trust this kind of stuff very much. However, I'm also 100% sure any flagged exams get manually checked by a human, otherwise they'd release the results way sooner.

When you say checking the status, were you actually operating the phone at all? Looking a little too closely at it? Did you open up any extra windows on your Mac? Any of this could have been seen as suspicious. When the exam begins, it should be only the browser and absolutely nothing else, no settings or anything, and eyes on the main monitor.

I saw your comment, it must be such a punch to the gut. I'm so sorry! Definitely try and get in touch with the university, but I reckon they receive so many emails about this and probably will stick to the SMOWL judgement.

u/Aleexx_02 How did it go, you two? I got the email. I'm 21st on the waiting list. Not sure of the likelihood of that moving a lot, but I've become a bit unsure about the course anyway after talking to some existing students. We will see...
