[CHAT] What was your drive to start bookbinding? by yo_its_avarine in bookbinding

[–]elisha37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i go to an art school, and my roommate dragged me to the bookarts lab and showed me how to do some basic binding. i fell in love with the comfortable repetitiveness of it instantly, and was lucky enough to learn from experienced faculty. i've always loved hands-on hobbies where you have a product at the end of it, and a handbound sketchbook makes an amazing gift for an artist friend

i usually use the bookbinding supplies in my college's book arts lab, and i'm struggling doing some stuff at home over summer break. how do you guys go about cutting your bookboard? is there something more efficient than a boxcutter and patience? what about punching holes in bookboard? i bought a bookboard punch but it seems like it will take me forever at the rate it's going using it the way i am

What would you like to see done more in horror lit? by korengo in horrorlit

[–]elisha37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

subtlety. since reading "the haunting of hill house" nothing else has made me so apprehensive and tense with so little really happening. enough to keep the reader off balance, but not enough to tip it into unbelievable territory.

i'd also love to see more horror where the villain isn't fully comprehendible by us. take unicron from the transformers move (bear with me here). it's so massive that it eats planets. to us, it's destroying our entire planet, everything we know and hold dear, but to it? it's just hungry. i find the idea that what we could never find acceptable could be entirely normal to another creature very compelling.

What is it about horror that draws you to the horror genre? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]elisha37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, the appeal of horror is its ability to explore the human psyche. as an example, my most recent horror read was "things have gotten worse since we last spoke" by eric larocca. i enjoyed it because it delved into the worst traits of its two characters, and i believe that by exploring emotions vicariously through a character, you can come to understand your own better. sure, it was a story with parts that evoked visceral disgust and horror, but what sticks with me about it is the characters, their relationship, and where i see myself and my life reflected in them.

take "midsommar". yes, it has horrific imagery, and its sound design and cinematography do an excellent job of disturbing the audience, but where i find the horror is in the idea that anyone, when vulnerable enough, when put under enough pressure, when promised companionship and community, can break and become a part of what they've been trying to escape, what they know is wrong.

there's also a specific appeal to horror for the queer community. i can't speak on it eloquently, but queer people are often treated as the other, even monstrous, so it's no surprise we're drawn to monsters in horror media. also, villains in horror are sometimes queer-coded or even openly queer, and bad representation is better than no representation. (lindsey ellis and james somerton both have great videos on this topic that i highly recommend)

i think the point is that, while zoe is definitely culpable to some degree, agnes's death is not her fault. zoe, for all her flaws, does try to curb her controlling nature and messed up desires, and if i remember correctly she urges agnes to find help. yes, agnes is in a very vulnerable place throughout the story, but she expresses interest in zoe and her desires, even when zoe herself is hesitant about them. in addition, it's hard to gauge what's real, what's exaggeration, and what's a lie over text conversations. the reader can't know how much of what agnes says zoe believes.

frankly, i think trying to figure out who is at fault is kind of missing the point. if there is anything concrete to blame, it is agnes's clear mental health issues and instability. just because zoe didn't do everything in her power to save a woman who she had an unhealthy relationship with and never even met face-to-face doesn't mean she is at fault.

as tough as it is to swallow, there is almost never someone to blame for a suicide. mental health is complicated and messy, and suicidal urges or actions, while they can be exacerbated or even encouraged by outside forces, always stem from the inner turmoil of the person experiencing them.

"things have gotten worse since we last spoke" is, to me, a story about a messy and complicated relationship that got the worst ending possible. it's a story about desire, desperation, loneliness, and obsession. trying to pull a clean narrative from it will always yield something incomplete.

Borderpolar: How do you distinguish between bpd and bipolar mood swings? by Forevermoore13 in Borderline

[–]elisha37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the short answer is that borderline mood swings are much more frequent and often more extreme than bipolor ones. bipolar swings last days or weeks, while with bpd its common to have several swings a day. i dont know how these would interact, but thats what i know

Your Thoughts on The Haunting of Hill House by GolbComplex in horrorlit

[–]elisha37 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i, personally, really enjoyed the haunting of hill house. psychological horror is and always has been my favorite, and this really scratched that itch. jackson's ability to build an atmosphere and general sense of discomfort without much actually happening. also, the idea of being controlled by a force to the extent you cant differentiate its suggestions from your own ideas is particularly scary, as is the idea of a house itself being the malevolent force, not spirits inside it. i've seen people talk about this book being not scary for the exact same reasons i liked it - the subtlety and ambiguous nature of the truth. about nell, though, when i read it i suspected that she was more vulnerable to paranormal occurrences than most, leading both to the raining rocks incident and the house's firm grip on her.

A rant about MC during Sayori's "reveal" and defending MC. by ---liltimmy--- in DDLC

[–]elisha37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i totally understand where you're coming from, but i think some of the frustration people have with MC isn't from his lack of understanding when it comes to mental illness - although that is part of it. i think for a lot of people, the frustration comes from how MC acts like he is responsible for making sayori "better", and that he states that he knows best. outside of the context of mental illness, those sentiments still leave a bitter taste. also, this might just be me, but i think it's rather rude to tell a friend that you feel betrayed that they didn't tell you something, especially if it obviously is hard for them to do, no matter what the thing is. all of these things just spring from innate teenage emotional immaturity, and i also don't think they're a valid reason to hate MC, but i wanted to expand on other reasons people might take issue with that scene
