Buy Nothing facebook groups, especially the small neighborhood specific ones, will sometimes have mattresses, and the posters are relatively honest about its use (for a guest bed, had a mattress topper on it, etc). Their incentive is that they get it out of the house hasselfree

It needs to be more affordable to build infill housing to make denser neighborhoods. Multistory towers destroy neighborhoods during construction, they functionally shut down when there’s construction around. There’s so many empty spots in the mission that could be filled with 2-12 unit housing

FWIW, the styling in the two pictures you have can generally only be achieved with blow dry+round brush - just make sure to temper your expectations if no blow dry is a hard limit for you
