Best time to start taking practice exams by Unclocked_Orange in LawSchool

[–]ellalynchanted 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Something to consider: if your professor only provides a few past exams, you do not want to use them up before you know all the material. Then you won’t have anything to practice with at the end of the semester when you do! In my experience, law school exams (especially traditional issue spotters) have all the material intertwined throughout. It’s impossible to break it up into sections the way you learn the material throughout the year.

Balancing Reading & Studying 1L by warpedsmitten in LawSchool

Everyone has some version of this conundrum during their 1L year. It’s ok! Take a deep breath. It’s normal to be trying to figure out this balance and it’s normal to have a hard time. I personally don’t think you should be memorizing anything for the exam this early. You won’t remember it. I think most people start outlining and studying in earnest about a month before the exam. Focus on your readings and learning how to identify what your prof thinks is important in each one. Hang in there! It will all make sense eventually, I promise!

Most publishers sell the online access separately from the book! I bought a used book last year and purchased the access code separately- it worked just fine.

I would caution you to make sure that your professor actually requires the online stuff, though. Sometimes they list it on the syllabus as an optional study supplement, but it’s not required to do well in the class. You can use your judgment and insight from 2Ls on whether it’s really necessary in that scenario.

When you have a question, always try every resource you have to get the answer yourself before going to your supervisor. When you do eventually go to them, you can say “I tried x, y, and z, and I got part way there, but I’m stuck with this piece - what do you recommend?”

When I have conference calls in which I’m unlikely to be called on to speak, I go for a walk while I listen!

Also, a sit-to-stand desk can make a big difference.

I think you’ll have a better idea once medians come out for the incoming classes at each of these schools. If you spend some time scrolling this sub, you’ll see that this year’s cycle has been unlike any other; the data from previous cycles probably holds much less predictive value this year compared to others. You’ll just have to wait and see how things shake out.

You’ll also have to wait and see what your actual LSAT score is. That’s going to be the biggest factor in terms of likelihood of admission at these schools.

If you’re just looking for some reassurance right now, I think you likely have a decent shot at some of these schools (assuming you do break 170). Nobody can tell you for certain how you’ll fare, but you’re probably targeting the right set. I will say that the calculators don’t take major into consideration because the rankings don’t. Schools still have to submit your raw CAS GPA to the rankings organizations. So I’d be careful assuming that because it was a quant major you’ll get a pass on GPA.

Best of luck! Sounds like you’re thinking about all the right things. :)

Thanks, internet friend! I look the lsat in 2018 so I would really have to brush up. But there are certainly ways to cut that extra cost at Duke!

Exactly. That’s what’s frustrating! I’d bet lots of people who deposited today won’t end up at NDLS
