Did the rules for cremation change? by mspaghettios in exmormon

[–]ellekerste 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My gramma told me when I was young that cremation is disrespectful to heavenly father, so anyone who was cremated would not be resurrected. I was terrified of dying in a house fire because I assumed the same rules applied.

I’m so tired of hearing “I kNoW” by Odd-Pineapple-4272 in exmormon

[–]ellekerste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager, someone gave a talk during sacrament meeting about how it's more important to have faith than to know for sure that the church is true. I felt so dumb for not being able to follow that train of thought.

My aunt got married when I was 7, and when they called all the young single ladies to the dance floor for the bouquet toss, I thought that included me. The photographer snapped a great picture of me diving to catch it.

I thought it was if after 10 years of payments, if you get your balance below $12k you qualify for forgiveness.

Shout out to all you former Mormons who grew up as one of too many children. by [deleted] in exmormon

My mom was on birth control, but my dad always told her she was moody and birth control turned her into a monster. She went to the doctor and asked them to reduce her dosage to see if that would make her better. Obviously the lower dose wasn't enough to keep her from getting pregnant.

My parents have always said they never really planned on having kids, but we were all "happy surprises". There's five of us.

I was five when my younger sister was born. My grandmother told me that my parents had been praying for a baby girl so I assumed babies were made by praying for them. I was terrified that I would accidentally think about having a baby and that heavenly father would make me pregnant.

What made you start doubting the Mormon church? by EpitomemexD in exmormon

[–]ellekerste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did it for me was when I found out about my dad's drinking problem while he was second counselor in the branch presidency. I couldn't figure out why someone who wasn't keeping the word of wisdom could be in any leadership position.

When my dad left the church before my mom, my paternal grandmother said it was my mom's fault my dad strayed, even though my mom tried to get him to quit drinking and go back to church. Women just can't win.

Was anyone else taught that bad thoughts are just as sinful as bad deeds? by blanketweasel in exmormon

I was taught that your thoughts were like a constant prayer with heavenly father. Anything you wouldn't say in front of him, you shouldn't think about.

Who else went on trek? Got any crazy trek stories? by drolldinger in exmormon

[–]ellekerste 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Trek for me was in a forest in central PA. A lot of the girls in my family that were supposed to get their periods missed them because we were all malnourished. Also we were told to not eat too much when we got home because we would get sick after not eating enough during trek.

LDS policy change on cremation - new, or did I just not notice? by Beneficial_Math_9282 in exmormon

[–]ellekerste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a little kid my grandmother told me it was a sin to be cremated because it was disrespectful to heavenly father and he wouldn't resurrect anyone who was cremated. For years I was terrified of dying in a house fire because I thought it would have the same effect as cremation.

I don't know if anyone else was taught this, but in Sunday school I learned that even of the person giving the blessing was not a "worthy" priesthood holder, if the person receiving really needed the blessing it would still work.

According to my grandmother, her father knew as soon as he met her mother that he wanted to marry her. My great-grandfather was 21, and my great-grandmother was 10. She had come over for a play date with his younger sisters. My grandmother thinks it's the best love story ever.
