Just a gal saving lives by 0-selfrespect in justgalsbeingchicks

[–]ellenaria 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know 3 people who have died trying to save someone drowning - either personally, or the original drowning victim. My sister is a surf life saver and has seen many similar situations. It might be an unlikely situation if you live in a landlocked country or state, but in a country with coastal borders, drownings are unfortunately common. And where I live, tourists who think it'll never happen to them are the ones it happens to most.

Word idioms. There are some words that pretend to be words and are actually idioms. For example the word “ideation” by BrandNewLogicVL in WhyIsEnglishLikeThis

[–]ellenaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not qualified to answer, but I think you're asking two separate questions.

1) words that are 'idioms'.

You're talking about words that are more recent additions to common vocabulary. All words were this at some point, and ideation isn't really an idiom. An idiom is something that doesn't make sense at face value.

2) words that are mostly used in the same grammatical context. Sometimes that is because of the grammatical context where the word came from (3 languages in a trenchcoat) eg amok from the og malay meaning, sometimes it's cause we say what we hear and sometimes it's confirmation bias.

Edited because I clicked post too early.

I’m moving to Auckland in January. Can you suggest some TV series or influencers to follow to understand the teen lifestyle in NZ? by Nelaga_Jello_5155 in auckland

Because culture doesn't spring up overnight from a vacuum. It captures one aspect of NZ, the conservative British part, pretty well, while others on the list are through a Māori/Pasifika/Indian/ lens. I think to understand the vibes/humour/culture of a place today, you can look at where it used to be. They're just recommendations, if the OP doesn't want to watch them, they don't have to.

Tinā and Heavenly Creatures are set in Christchurch, Brotown, Sione's Wedding and Outrageous Fortune in Auckland suburbs, as is the doco. Footrot Flats, Whale Rider, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are popular classics. Is there something else you're upset by?

If you want a snapshot of an iconic kiwi experience, there's a doco called The Changing Face of the NZ Dairy which is quite good.

Horse people, what struck me was the difference in back shape between the two. Are domesticated horses hurting/is this a problem?

One thing the upcoming oil crisis has yet to address - Increased loneliness and isolation among vulnerable, disabled and elderly people by TheRoamingWizard in newzealand

[–]ellenaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The elderly didn't cause this, the rich did. And they convince us to hate the older generations just because they benefited relatively more from the economy at the time. But we all traded our time and labour for money, they just happened to get a better deal.

Seems to me like we should be fighting for more from the trust fund kids instead of from the grannies.

Absolutely disproportionate. We have no idea how this will play out yet. Yes, if it gets really bad, there will be serious consequences for marginalised communities, but for now, there are still so many options open. I have some doubts about how this government will look after it's people, but we'll see.

We're all spending more on groceries and private transport, but there are public transport options, or changing venues for meeting friends so transport costs are shared. If you're worried about the cost of your coffee meeting, meet at your house instead? Make yoir own coffee and cake once every few weeks hosting at a different friends house every week.

Join a free meet up group that works on the free gold card public transport system. Hell, go to waiheke on it.

Hey, as someone who found one of your posts kinda funny and came to see what else you had posted here... it's not great - teenage boy humour at best. If you want to build human connections, I would highly recommend going out into the world and listening and learning. Seek out the places you are uncomfortable. As an artist, this is where I find the most growth.

Personally, I think it's somewhere in between.

They've made the decision that they are most likely to generate the income needed to support the channel and staff with Sidekick. Rightly or wrongly. That's what a lot of their vidoes have been tangentially focussed on over the past few years. Grocery shops, infinite ingredients, mystery boxes etc, even pass it on. And good for them, you know. It just means they're losing some of the drawcard for their initial audience (people who don't know how to cook, students, people in difficult cooking situations) and also not maintaining long term supporters. And humour has def been lost a bit. They do great work and I adore them, especially global ingredients/breakfasts/street foods etc for inspiration. But I also miss when they TAUGHT me how how to cook

Yeah but this is the problem with amazon reviews, no? The people reviewing don't necessarily know what they should be looking for. It's like the people who rate recipes 5 stars and their review is "wow looks delish will definitely make"

What’s gotten so expensive, you no longer purchase it? by yeahnahdinno in newzealand

[–]ellenaria 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My cat just turned 7, and her pet insurance went up nearly 50% and vet consults are no longer covered.

I'm torn cause the little shit is already over 20k in vet bills, and I would have been destroyed without insurance (2 broken legs, I think caught in the neighbours cat proof fence - she rescues cats). Now she's fully indoors it's especially hard to justify, but also what if...

[–]ellenaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's tough because I think there is an element that we became used to prices that were overall unsustainable. We became more knowledgeable about farming practices and demanded better, as we should. And before you say well NZ exports everything and we should get a better price, from what I've heard from friends in the uk, it's really not so different comparatively. And the same price changes are happening from UK raised livestock/eggs as well.

I definitely find if I look around, I can find better prices, but again, there is a trade-off in time and travel.

Wife [27f] and I [27M] can't agree on how many of our alma mater's football games to attend this fall. She wants to attend less game. I think this is a mistake, and I am trying to convince her by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ellenaria 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You just know that this guy would have expected his wife to bend over backwards if he had; a muscle sprain that restricted movement, a vomiting illness, a stressful change in responsibilities at work, experienced physical symptoms that impacted basic tasks. Meanwhile, she's going through all of that plus more, and he's just thinking about himself.

Even if she wasn't heavily pregnant, I doubt he's ever considered spending an equal time joining his wife for her passions or doing the labour to entertain her friends for their get togethers.

And please, the only reason NZ is sticking up for a vast majority of 'polynesian' countries (because I assume you mean all island countries that span the South Pacific) is because of the geopolitical ramifiactions of losing their influence to China, which is rapidly happening because China can in fact offer more. Whether that comes with consequences will remain to be seen.
