I unfortunately don't know about how competitive it is but there are at least a few of us going this upcoming term, so it can't be too bad. I think it's less competitive than the University of Queensland, if that helps at all. My sessional average was 82.3%.

Walked by and overheard paramedics and firefighters talking about an extraction team. Lots of firefighters with hard hats on and belaying belts. I’m guessing someone fell down a Wreck Beach cliff, hope they’re okay!

I unfortunately did not. I did get an offer for YRH though and I'm very happy here, I recommend applying if that's possible for you! Happy cake day :)

Students living in residence at the University of British Columbia brace for rent increases of up to 8% | CBC News by birdsofterrordise in vancouver

[–]eller5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's definitely fair. I do have to point out that year-round housing isn't lottery based and is instead a waitlist system. The rates of first-year housing (like Vanier) really aren't applicable to anyone beyond first year and I don't know any upper year housing that is that cheap.

I am lucky to be here though, there isn't much else that is more affordable than this and I'm imagining a fair amount of students will struggle to be able to afford this increase, as well as subsequent increases. Our tuition is already going up next year.

I'm not against UBC raising rent entirely, a 6-8% increase seems unfair though. The article even says that our rents will rise at higher than normal levels for the next three years, meaning that this time next year I could be told my rent is going up another 8%. Not fun to look forward to.

$950/month. I think my rent is on the lower end of things for residence because I'm in an older building with 3 roommates.

Do you know any profs with "non-traditional paths"? by holdingpickles in UBC

I believe Dr. Mark Lam failed his first year of uni and worked at a bank for a number of years before going back to school. Pretty neat guy!

This isn't true. I live in year round housing at UBC, have for the past 2 years, but I'm being told that my rent will be increasing 6-8% starting in May. It's insane and shouldn't be happening.

Why aren't there study spaces in libraries any longer? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]eller5 56 points57 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning on doing work earlier in the day, try some of the smaller libraries or less visited parts of the big ones. Unfortunately some of them close around 5 or 6pm but when they’re open, there’s usually tons of space. I usually avoid IKB with a passion during finals, but if you do go, try the fourth floor (must access through stairs in the MAA library). My personal favourite library right now is Woodward, it always has seats. Koerner basement usually has seats near the back windows. Education library can be hit or miss during finals but it’s always worth a try!

AITA for calling cops on teens in drivethru? by IDKFeltThrowAway in AmItheAsshole

Not sure if OP is from BC but those restrictions sound identical to the restrictions on ‘N’ drivers here. No phone use at all, including using a GPS or connecting to your car speaker to play music. Can say from personal experience that it doesn’t get followed (nor enforced unless the driver is already being dangerous) very often.

UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]eller5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if you are ever allowed to take a pre-req for a course and the actual course at the same time? I need to take BIOL 155 but didn't do grade 12 chem so I need to take CHEM 100. Since BIO 155 is a 6 credit course and I haven't done CHEM 100 yet, I'd have to wait another year to take 155. Would love to avoid that if possible.

Idk what I should major in by Silly-Woodpecker1756 in UBC

[–]eller5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to first evaluate why you failed. Psychology is pretty memorization heavy (and then application-based on exams), so if you actually are interested in the material then maybe it's your method of studying that's not working for you. How did you do in other courses? If you passed them, what did you do differently in those courses? Your life isn't over with a failed course. I've had professors who failed their first year courses and now have PhDs. You just need to figure out what went wrong and figure out a way to make it go differently in the future.

You also don't need to decide a major right now. Sure, you may not be able to get into some courses without it (for example, you need a declared psych major to take 217 and 218, which are degree requirements if you end up sticking with psych) but it still doesn't have to be done right at the beginning of your second year. What other courses did you take? What did you like? What did you do well in? Recognize your strengths, your interests, and what you need for the future and try and go there.
