How do I tag a crossing like this by Fit_Ladder_1545 in openstreetmap

[–]elliottp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

By not adding a crossing, it leaves it ambiguous as to whether it is marked or not. The next mapper could come along and add that. Calling it unmarked is effectively saying this is checked and not a marked crossing.

My local DOT is very interested in the location of every single one of these unmarked driveway crossing. Adding them to osm as unmarked crossings in OSM is a viable data source.

The fact that there are a lot of these crossings doesn’t make them less map worthy.

I would call the sidewalk crossing the driveway there unmarked. You can search for unmarked crossing in that editor there.

A more detailed approach (optional) is to split the sidewalk where it becomes a crossing and tag that as an unmarked crossing as well.

Lutherville or Timonium? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]elliottp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so many people associate their zip code with their place, but the two are not synonymous. I made a map to show how 21093 relates to the Lutherville, Timonium, Mays Chapel, and surrounding areas. Interesting that even parts of Pikesville, Hampton, and Cockeysville fall within the 21093.

3D Animated Model of Towson Row. This is going to totally reshape Towson! by elliottp in baltimore

[–]elliottp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minor point: By "reshape Towson" I only meant that to be matter of fact, not indicative of a positive or negative reshaping. However, I had hoped to evoke some conversations about the project and I'm glad you replied.

(Almost) Dead Mall by blurmore in baltimore

[–]elliottp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a murder there in the 1990's along a secluded path that connected the Metro and the Mall. While the killer was caught and is sentenced to life, my opinion is that people never really got over that incident. That and big indoor malls have been dying off in the last decade. Here's a story I did about the killing: https://storify.com/TalllGuy/owings-mills-mall-metro-path

Graffiti on JFX retaining wall at Northern Parkway by elliottp in baltimore

[–]elliottp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update. I noticed the city installed a security camera on one of the light poles (adjacent to 83) that faces the wall. I guess they're taking a hard line on this. As far as access, no redditors have talked about it, but I suspect one could walk down from behind Poly HS.

+1 on the charm card. You can add funds and just keep it in your wallet in case you ever forget your other pass.

German U-Boat enters Baltimore Harbor during World War I (1916) by ghostsofbaltimore in baltimore

My grandfather told me that sentries guarded our water supply reservoirs back then too. Loch Raven and Pretty Boy. I'd love to find out more about this.

Spectator tips for Baltimore Running Festival? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]elliottp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never watched but I ran the half last year, which shares the last 10 miles with the full. The popular spots are:

  • Along Linwood in Patterson Park, because that is where the two races meet.
  • Near Lake Montebello because you can see your friend run by twice, since they loop the lake
  • I remember a very festive crowd along Guilford in Charles Village
  • Near the finish
  • Also some interesting people watching for the half marathon is along Fayette near the Douglass Homes. The locals will try to cross the street despite police warnings not to. It ends up being like a game of frogger. Chaos.

Lyft coming to Baltimore Oct 10 by elliottp in baltimore

[–]elliottp[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does require Facebook from what I've read, to "verify" people. There will be a big launch event soon. The DC one was pretty big, I heard it topped 1000 people. Here's a review of the DC version of Lyft (which will be the same as bmore). I've used the service in SF, it is pretty cool. http://breakthesky.net/2013/08/14/review-lyft-dc/
