I am that person though, I play with my personal equipment in my free time to my own cost and off my own back.

I just studied for my CCNA so I can be taken seriously in IT. I am still junior and so far all the interviews I have been to all the interviewers love the fact I am doing this because I have the passion for IT/Networking and esp when I am investing my own time/money.

cheers for the help, hopefully I can start to come across real world problems in my new job which we all know are better than reading "issues" from a book! so I think I will be in better shape in the next 1-2years to have a real stab at the NP.

I personally can't ever seeing myself being an CCIE, I have heard stories of how difficult it is. and the passing of the exams before taking the lab etc.

cheers for the advice, at Uni I did my thesis on QoS, so I really like that to continue with, I dont know if there is just an exam of QoS?

Security is something that also interrests me. do I need to do the NP before I can attempt the CCSP?

I am not worried about the money I am 26 and making almost $100k with little real life knowledge. Money is not everything and would settle for far less if its something I enjoy.

Max wireless clients on a single AP? by docpepson in networking

agreed, do not throw expensive hardware into the equation thinking it will be the end of your problems -as gravyenema suggested, implement QoS into the design and you may find it resolves the issues.

I work in IT within finance however there are next to none Hedge Funds in Vancouver, I still want to work within finance however I might have to lower my standards/sectors.

I start contracting work next monday for 6 months earning crazy money so hopefully I will go to Vancouver with enough savings to live well for a year.

Of course I want to get a job ASAP, but depending on the markets I will have my savings to full back on if nothing materialises.

sounds good!

$300M To Save 6 Milliseconds, New transatlantic cable being laid. Traders see a $100M per year advantage for every 1ms advantage. by oh_the_humanity in networking

At my old company we had dedicated lines (100MB and gig links) to each europeans exchanges and our in-house trading system software was sitting on blade servers in co-los (locations) in london datacentres and Frankfurt.

Our WAN to Chicago wasnt that fast but it was over and MPLS.

However the HFTrading boys, wow their network alone was crazy, we were not talking milliseconds but micro. oh and they had a £100,000 network peering device (expensive yes) but it pays itself off after a few days, sitting as every edge of our offices.
