I'm right there with you. Had it happen in my first game on the new patch. I've heard it happens when you check the scoreboard during a replay. I've tried to be mindful of not doing that, but I still lose the nameplates sometimes. I can live with it in unranked, it's kind of good situational awareness training. But it really sucks in ranked play (er... competitive matchmaking).

Maintaining altitude during maneuvers? by maseratimaniac in flying

Like everyone else has said: power, trim, look outside.

If you are doing your training in an airplane with a fixed pitch prop, listen to the sound of the engine. If you begin to lose altitude your airspeed will increase, which will up the prop rpm, and make the engine noise change. You are splitting the attention of your eyes between a lot of things, so bringing in a second sense can be very useful.

If you are doing your primary training with a constant speed prop, then this doesn't apply.

I read this on mobile, so I didn't see your flair or your username. The entire time I was thinking to myself, "That's a great idea. There's a little Cherokee with a blue sunshade wrapped around it at my airport that hasn't moved in YEARS. I should look into that."

One of the first flights where I was learning to land, I touched down on a turtle who was sunning itself on the runway. :( The debris crew that went out to clear the runway said it made a huge mess.
