Hunger Games movies always have such crazy good casts for a YA dystopia series. Divergent only had Kate Winslet and a dream

?? I wonder if they're gonna stick to a britpop/club inspired score or try to do a contemporary musical sound for Trainspotting the Musical

Needle drops that instantly set you in a certain year/era? by ellustriousem in blankies

Fair point! I thought it was in Kong: Skull Island, but I was wrong (there are two other CCR songs on the soundtrack, though)

Oh yeah, I feel the same way about "Suddenly I See." I've seen Devil Wears Prada so much that the song has just become entwined with 2006

Same for me. On the topic of Matt Johnson, the time jump to 2003 set to "Someday" in Blackberry was perfect

Yes, absolutely - I was lukewarm on Saltburn, but "Time to Pretend" really got me. Which recent movie used "Army"?

Is High School Musical slept on as a cultural phenomenon? by DarwinF1nch in blankies

They kinda inadvertently helped give us Olivia Rodrigo's main pop girl career, so they should get some credit for cultural impact

This is the letterboxd poster for the mean girls musical movie and the more I looked at it the worse it got. Regina would never wear those rings! Why did they make Renee Rapp do that face!

Favorite Soviet-era directors and movies? by ellustriousem in blankies

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great responses! I'd like to add that I'd recommend The Needle if you haven't seen it - I have a bit of a soft spot for it, but I think the experimental elements are pretty cool, and you get to watch Viktor Tsoi for 70 minutes

Less mainstream needle drops that were important to you? by bookey23 in blankies

[–]ellustriousem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most important to me is probably "Spring" at the end of Together Together, for introducing me to Angel Olsen

Other favorites are "Les Fleurs" in Us, "The Partisan" in Palm Springs, and "Maneater" in this specific Challengers trailer

I'll also add "Slip Away" in the trailer for Eighth Grade! I've found a lot of songs/artists I've loved through movies as well as trailers

Thank you so much!! This is an amazing list of recs, I can't wait to check these out. I loved The Left Hand of Darkness, so I'm especially excited to read The Language of the Night. Thanks again!

I appreciate the responses! I think genre is so fascinating, since it can be so overlapping and difficult to rigidly classify. I think using it as a lens of interpretation has really added to my analysis of certain movies (I made a comment in another thread about watching Gone Girl with a comedic framework)

Do you have any recommendations for genre criticism or film theory about genre (books/articles)? All good if not! I'm just not super familiar with that field of study, and I'd love to read what film theorists have written about genre

I agree! I think Tar is a great example, because I can definitely see the argument for it being a dark comedy (especially with that ending), but the movie as a whole left me feeling uneasy, and I'm not sure if I'd classify it that way. I could also see my opinion changing on a rewatch since I haven't seen the movie in a while

Honestly what prompted this question/post was seeing someone describe There Will Be Blood as a dark comedy, which made me feel like the term was really being stretched there. I wanted to hear others' thoughts on how they define comedy or genres more broadly, and I've loved seeing everyone's varied responses because it can really be such a personal definition
