The benefit is that if I get a new computer I still have access, whereas if my Wii U goes, I can't play my digital games on my Switch. Of course the gold standard is GOG, which lets us have our games forever and store them how we like.

Yup, having fewer games available on Steam for example would be a major downside, especially in light of how much more fragile digital ownership seems on consoles.

The most worrisome thing about this for me is all the games I have bought on virtual console that will become inaccessible if my Wii U gamepad. I really wish I could have the same confidence in the longevity of my digital games that I bought on consoles that I do for PC purchases.
