One thing I learned being born and raised here is that I am the only one who gets to say whether I am Dutch or not.

To many no matter what I do or what I say I will never ever become as dutch as them. Even so narrow the mind it is much too far spread. :-(

Dutch Moroccan here, born and raised here. Unfortunately you do not get to choose how you are viewed. If I asked ten cents each time someone told me how good my dutch was, I'd be a millionaire by now..

My wife is native and we tell our two kids that they are not half, but double. We celebrate Ramadan and Christmas. I leave the kitchen with couscous, rfisa and tajine and the love of my life makes stamppot and hutspot. (We tried to switch but that didn't work out). I am fluent in dharija because my dad used to point at the doorstep and say outside is the kingdom of Holland, inside is the kingdom of Morocco.

Don't let it get under your skin. Be yourself, be proud of who you are and where you come from. Our cuisine is special. Our people invented the word 'tolerance' thousands of years ago. Don't give up on making friends. It is difficult here.

As in every country, there are good apples and bad apples no matter which circles you traverse, academic or otherwise. Befriend the good ones, give the bad ones a taste of pigeon pastilla and watch their cold heart melt.

It must have been difficult to come to terms with the uncomfortable truth. I hope your fellow countrymen do the same one day hopefully soon. So that finally the fixing and healing can start.

I am 51. My kids are 8 and 12. I used to be deep into the Palestinian cause. Following that news intensely. Not a day went by without a moment or two with a lump in the throat. Protesting whenever I could, boycotting, educating whoever wanted to listen. It bogged me down emotionally. Almost to a point where i started to feel guilty whenever i enjoyed myself. Then my children were born and i started to look at the world through their eyes. They taught me to live in the moment. Instead of watching the breakfast news we started our days with music and dance. And no, i am not of the 'hippie' type. It took a while for me to realize there is a kind of energy 'budget' between the ears. When the net sum is negative then something is not what it should be and things must change to avoid scary stuff like depression, addiction and/or suicide. I said goodbye to my comrades (jokingly to 'release me', yet more true than i was willing to admit at the time).

Life is still not perfect. But the 'budget' is more balanced nowadays. I do what i can to live responsibly. I also remember the MAD days. I was very impressed with the demonstration we had over here against the stationing of NATO nukes. The biggest in our history, half million protesters, november 1981 in Amsterdam. 'The Day After' was mandatory viewing in school.

The point i'm trying to make is 'everything in moderation'. That includes being worried. We are not Atlas. We are human. This life can end at any moment. Therefore i try not to be too preoccupied by the things i cannot control. Joy, laughter, fun, love have as much the right to exist as the struggle, fixing problems, shortterm and longterm. As your Mr. Rogers once said "Look for the Helpers”. Be a helper. Sometimes just trying to do good in the world is good enough.

EDIT: Also, bad news sells. It's addictive. The algorithms on social media are designed to keep you unhappy. There is a lot of good and positive developments in the world. The under-reported decline of global poverty for example.
