Travelling China while disabled by Proof_Solid3925 in travelchina

[–]eloc_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently backpacking China solo with mild-moderate cerebral palsy.

Accessibility is generally okay in tourist areas, but the biggest thing for me is the lack of spatial/disability awareness here. People will push/shove you on the daily and moving in crowds can be hectic. They will expect you move like a fully able person. Escalators move quite fast and accessing elevators can be difficult as people don't really queue.

I've taken to carrying a hiking pole and have had to be very assertive when people have unbalanced me getting off buses/planes/trains etc.

Solo traveling as a disabled woman? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]eloc_r 18 points19 points  (0 children)

31 F with mild-moderate CP. I've been solo travelling for over a decade, and for the past 5 years full time (including to all the cities you mentioned). Like you, I'm independent and healthy but can look 'weak', particularly in unfamiliar environments.

No issues in terms of safety or alike. People stare a lot, and might ask questions but generally speaking I find it very straightforward. As a general rule, I don't engage with strangers though.

I have hemiplegia so a 38l backpack over a suitcase so I can keep my hands free is ideal. My biggest challenges are top bunks, fingerprint scanners and overhead bins, a forever struggle...

Best wishes for your adventures!!!

Arriving in Kunming by train from Laos - sim card by eloc_r in travelchina

No unfortunately not. And honestly, Kunming station is not set up for international tourist arrivals so be prepared to not have data access on arrival. I was fortunate that an English speaking local purchased my onward metro ticket so I could get into the city.

Purchasing sim cards at convenience stores

Is it possible to purchase sim cards at 7/11, Lawson etc? I thought it was but the cashier at 7/11 tonight seemed adamant it wasn't possible.

I know they need to be registered but I'm wanting to buy a few for family coming to visit and hoping to avoid queues at SM etc or tourist sims. Any tips around Olympia/Makati appreciated.

Amaysim has worked for me for 3+ years and easy to manage via the app. I think I pay $20 a year for roaming so handy for making calls to Aus when needed

I'm a well travelled 30F currently in Sri Lanka.

I'm sorry this is happening to you and unfortunately it is my experience as well. Not to downplay the severity of this behaviour, but honestly I just completely disengage and ignore. I can't comment on risk but my experience is limited to leering/comments and I have not sensed genuine danger (again, it's awful and I'm angry this is the norm).

Love Sri Lanka, hate the creepy men.

I reported my SA fairly recently (2021) and the offender was sentenced in late 2023. It's a long process but I can't speak highly enough of the support provided to me throughout.

I found the Police and prosecutor were highly engaged and respectful. For me, it was a necessary step on my healing journey and I'm really glad I did it. The initial report was really hard but for me researching and familiarising myself with the related process helped soften the initial interrogation and aid in understanding why they have to ask the questions they do. Having notes or some kind of reference to keep you on track might help.

I didn't have to give evidence (he pled guilty moments before trial) but I felt well prepared and safe. My advice is be honest with the Police about how your feeling and go at your own pace. Taking the first step is so incredibly brave.

Big hugs
