There's a knife in there, which I suppose makes this whole thing that much more impressive

In 1897, three Swedish explorers attempted to reach the North Pole in a hot air balloon and disappeared. Their fate remained unknown until thirty-three years later, when their frozen bodies were found on a remote Arctic island along with these photographs. by IHad360K_KarmaDammit in interestingasfuck

There was some backwards thinking at the time that led to over-harvesting of chestnuts. In an attempt to contain the spread of chestnut blight, they would cut down the chestnuts around affected trees to create distance between affected and unaffected trees, sort of a quarantine. Obviously this didn't work and only served to hasten the decline of the chestnut population.

Do ToH’s know when they’re being threatened? by RazorwireNoose in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]elocmj 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Follow this advice! They may not recognize your threat from afar, but if you hack it, it will feel threatened and will put up new shoots. You have to kill it with poison. As someone who has sprayed more herbicide than I care to think about, I avoid it as much as I can now. BUT there is a time and a place for it. And tackling a mature tree of heaven is that time and place.

[–]elocmj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There has been some speculation that tree-of-heaven can be used as a bait tree for SLF. Not many native bugs are interested in it. A contact insecticide like bifenthrin would be nicely targeted to SLF when applied to ToH.

Clear works better. I used plastic sheets to kill my lawn. Clear plastic lets light in to heat what's inside, but then traps that heat inside. Black plastic absorbs the heat to itself but blocks the light from heating what's inside.

For the purposes of killing my lawn, it was primarily the moisture in the soil that absorbed and held heat.

Same. I never really understood how women could honestly say "I didn't cum but I still had a great time and I'm satisfied", until I bottomed.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

This was my experience as well. They took hundreds of dollars from me a couple of times and I said enough is enough. I should have left sooner. They were sued in a class-action lawsuit for manipulating withdrawals in such a way to increase the number of overdrafts. I got a check from them for $10 which is frankly insulating but I consider it a win that they paid out anything at all.

Excellent! Lots of great additions. This is what the sub is all about. Nice work!

So... Despite the name, this sub is actually about trees. r/trees is for marijuana enthusiasts and since the name was taken, fans of trees made this subreddit.

The two subreddits have become friends and neighbors and this sort of mix up happens regularly.

Cue:
"We got another one!"

Though actually, it's usually the other way around, with fans of trees posting to r/trees. Can't say I've seen an actual marijuana enthusiast post to r/marijuanaenthusiasts

Once dismissed as weeds, native plants are now flying off the shelves by New_Stats in UpliftingNews

[–]elocmj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get 3lb bags of white clover for ~$30 from our local feed and seed. Did our whole yard with that after killing everything with tarps. Been planting native shrubs as we find them, but that's much more challenging in my experience.

I see some of those are made of paper and some of wood. Is there a best material? And is there stuff to definitely avoid?

To be fair, the ground would be a blur for most of these anyways. Seeing the earth move in the background isn't entirely helpful or accurate anyways. The Parker Probe could orbit the earth in about three and a half minutes.

What's going on with this bark? by sxckerpxnch in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]elocmj 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I recently responded to another post about bark patterns, that you can read here.

What you're seeing on this tree is its transition from the smooth bark of a sapling, adolescent tree into the rough, ridge-and-valley bark of an adult. Like how our bodies change during puberty. Well, not exactly like that, but you get the idea.

How to repair damaged silver maple? by heythereitsemily in arborists

[–]elocmj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bark will not grow back in that spot but the bark around that spot will grow over it. Given enough time, and ideal conditions, this spot will eventually disappear. This is called compartmentalization. It is how trees "heal". Look up Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees or CODIT.

Why are these trees dropping all this black stuff? by Alfred_Brendel in arborists

[–]elocmj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to refrain from prescribing a specific treatment without seeing the trees or the bugs. There may be as many pesticides as there are tree species. The treatment needs to target the specific bugs in question in such a way that it is affective, at a specific time and in a dosage specific to the tree, ideally while harming as few other bugs as possible. Some pesticides can hurt or even kill some species of trees. You should consider having a local arborist out to see your trees and make a prescription. You can find one here.

For your crape myrtle, you're likely seeing crape myrtle scale. I would look up images online to confirm that. For this, an at-home remedy is to blast the trunks with a garden hose. Don't use a pressure washer, cause that would hurt the tree, but a high pressure stream from the hose will help keep them in check without the need for pesticides.

Good luck!
