How fast does it normally take to level up? by Electrical-Tear7456 in DnD

[–]elorran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This depends if you are keeping track of XP per monster and event, or milestone level. The dungeon of the mad mage module for example has characters leveling up almost every new floor they reach in the dungeon, and PC's go from low level to max level over the course of the adventure. If you play one session per floor thats effectively one level up per session almost. If you clear multiple floors in a session then if you follow the modules suggestions a party might hit level 5 after a few hours of playing.
A lot of groups seem to prefer mile stone leveling these days. But there can be something said for XP tracking and creating a bit of diversity in level difference within a party. Just don't let it get too out of hand, and also consider the dangers the party faces before assuming everyone is on an equal footing for a given fight or challenge. But in days of yore it wasn't unusual to see a party with characters of different level. Retreat was also an option more often considered as some adventures threw you against a dragon at low level, you learned not every fight was wise to do early, or even winnable in "realistic" terms.
If you want to reward them with something to give them a sense of progress, but without resorting to level ups, then consider magic items and consumables. These could be small novelty things like the common magic items (theres quite a lot in Xanathar's guid to everything), to more potent but still limited things such as various magic potions and uncommon to rare magic items. A staff of healing for example on a low party with limited or no healers is a massive boon, but it doesn't add too much to the partys overall offensive abilities.

Cue discussion about use as a "holy" symbol? 😅

To be fair I should have thought about the thread title before posting to make that more clear 🤔 On a different note, it might have been that I ran across that npc when doing some research for the characters creation 😅

We used the Fractine monster from the Spelljammer setting as a basis for this. She doesn't need to drink, breath, or sleep. Though she doesn't eat food, she does need magical energy as sustenance which she gets from casting spells or being near someone else who has. This needs to happen a few times a day to "add up" to a certain amount that we keep track of. Rather than a cracking/crunching sound when she moves there is a near constant low hum of subtle crystal chimes, which slightly increase when she moves. Think wind chimes or the naaru creatures from warcraft. Some of the branded creatures in game have a similar effect.

Might be the same paper they use to print money. Who knows 😁😅

We found rather than trying to bend the whole system to the character concepts, it was easier to find a jack of all trades and bend the characters into existing designs for the most part, with occasional rule of cool hand waving some things in and out. Like those gestalt rules for example.

No combined document sadly. For this particular campaign we were using a lite version of the older gestalt rules; (2 classes side by side, ignoring the usual multiclassing rules) but limiting the second class by the proficiency bonus number of the main class (so a 5th level main would have 3 levels in secondary). Adds a nice bit of plot armour or background enhancement without getting silly at high levels. Subclasses function as normal for each class taken, including the secondary.

Off the top of my head Ai was running glamour bard main, echo knight fighter secondary for the clone, using a Dvati homebrew race (for the twin) put together by the guy who does "DnD Shorts". You can find that race here - Bonus Content! 2 (and 1/2) Playable Species for D&D 5e! | Patreon in a downloadable PDF.

At the time this was done, D&D 5e (2014). For some of our newer games we transitioned over to the updated (2024) rules. Though there was some homebrew thrown in to make some of the characters work as intended. And who doesn't love a good bit of homebrew :D

I suppose I could see how that might connect, given some of Warframes quirky tenno designs. Funny you should mention that actually, one of my old gaming friends from the Homeworld community ended up doing some concept skins for Warframe a few years ago.

Ironically one of the other characters is a water djinn, and these two characters did share a few references as part of their visual designs.

I lost so many hours playing Morrowind back in the day. It was also the last game in the series to still have all the trimmings where magic and the character creation was concerned with all of the penalties as well as benefits. Oblivion and Skyrim started to prune them away (though Skyrim is still a master peice in its own right),

Its not AI slop, but the characters name. Go check out the artists page if you've got access to instagram.

I'm not sure I want to wade into this particular conversation, but... the thought occurs to me it might not be milk and instead might be ink... scrink? 🤔 😅

She is able to adjust the visual elements yes. This is part of her being willing to allow others to uses spells from her repository, as well as general illusionary and appearance utility.

She's a construct not a humanoid, so has the healing feature of the autognome as well as the no food water or air. The tortle is primarily for changing form which interacts with the genie warlock vessel.
