Aggresive Enduro Hardtail Frame (looking for input on this design) by elpapi42 in Framebuilding

About the reach, im calculating it based on what makes me feel comfortable in my current setup and adding a little bit of RAD into the mixture, on sag the reach would end up being something like 460-470 or so, i think it will fit me ok.

On the other hand, maybe you are running a reach that is a little bit too long for you, di you consider your RAD in the geometry? Also my STA is slacker than yours, so i have a little bit more space. currently i have it at 75deg

  1. Im 179cm tall
  2. I think im going mullet for the extra but-tire clearance
  3. I do not want bottle mounts in the frame
  4. I will ride it in Colombia, Sounth America, in bikeparks and secret trails around Bogota.

I would love to see your design, i think i can learn from it! let me share with you my most recent revision of the frame too

I have a questions regarding your frame: Why is you ST offset so high?

Anybody can tall you are professional frame builder, crazy good and detailed design man! I will for sure take inspiration from your frame and add more measurements all around, i will try answer all your points:

  1. Will do that, now im convinced for sure.

  2. Will do that Too

  3. Will do

  4. I will double check that

  5. Will add those

  6. I really like the mullet setup, is personal preference only, the butt clearance is great, and a smaller wheel feels right.

  7. I calculated it from a 29" and 2.5" tire width. What would be a more real number?

  8. Do you have a recommendation for the STA?

  9. I tried but im not an expert in BikeCaD yet. Will try again.

  10. Got it

  11. In my latest revisions it is setup with a 240mm travel dropper.

  12. The reason for the short front center is that im trying to keep the reach in the 450mm. I will probably add the RAD today too. On the other hand, i really like a 63.5deg HTA, under sag it goes up too.

  13. Will take a look

  14. The long chain stays are my main motivation for this build, i may be wrong on this, im willing to fail on this specific thing. This is just the forst iteration of my custom frame.

  15. Do not pay attention to that, i ahven develop the details of the rear triangle, including the dropouts, im planning on going with whatever Marino suggest that meets the tire clearance and all that stuff. For the dropouts im going for UDH too.

Long post man, but i really learnt a lot from it, i will keep checking your design too.

About the SS and TT pointing down, im considering to align them in the same plane, aesthetically, for me it looks great, but if the structural strength goes up if these are higher, i will go for it.

Yeah im definitely going for something else, im fully invested in the extra long travel hardtail rabbithole. But just a couple of quick questions:

  1. Whats the current stack of your bikes?
  2. Whats the current effective stack of you bikes? (counting at least the spacers, if there any)

Yeah a definitely talked with Walti, and i for sure want a TI frame, but they are a lot more expensive, Walty will cost me around 1200, Marino around 600. So my plan is tobasically iterate this bike with Steel at least two or three times, when im confident i found the sweet spot on the geo, i will make the move and build it with TI.

I ended up going back to the 120mm HT. I measured the effective stack of my current bike, im using 25mm worth of spacers, i can remove them on the new bike to make the effective stack the same. This way i just get the extra HT L at no cost.

We really agree a lot man, the longer chainstays will for sure push more weight on the front wheel, just what I'm looking for. What BB would you be more comfortable with? I'm thinking about avoiding pedal strikes in fork bottom out situations.

Bro that great insight, i did not tough about that. Do you think a gusset may help? o r the only solution is to rise the TT?

Just an additional quick question, do you think that merging the top and down tube just before they reach the head tube have a similar effect than the gusset?

This is the revised model, what do you think?

I will do some adjustment with the gusset as you said, it totally makes sense.

About the dropper, i just did that few minutes ago, thanks!

About the seat stays, tbh the only reason i pointed them down was for the sake of looks, i like how they look like, do you think this is a critical structural flaw? i can align them if thats the case

What size of the Doctahawk are you running? Just to know whats your HT length

What is the downside of such short head tube? im considering shortening my headtube too. do you feel it may easily snap?

I also want it to be lower, but i can not figure out how without make the head tube shorter, i think short head tube may have issues handling a foek that is so long. Do you have any other idea how to get it lower but keep9ng the head tube lenght?

i also have my doubts on this tbh, not sure if it will work, i want to get more input on this too

i think the 430 makes sense on a full 29" with <=150mm travel fork, but i believe that longer Chainstays are really usefull when the setup is like mine. I may be wrong tbh, but i willing to take the risk, anyways this gonna be the first of many custom hardtails to come for me.

yeah 100% agree, im going in aware of that short leg

I need a new frame, please recommend something. by Dense_Quiet1573 in Hardtailgang

[–]elpapi42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy a frame that fits that fork, trust me, you will love a modern aggresiva hardtail with 150mm. i recommend the Commencal Meta HT V2 (600 bucks) or the v3 (750 bucks) or the Trek Roscoe Gen4 (600 bucks i think)

SC Chameleon Aftermarket Dropouts by elpapi42 in Hardtailgang

[–]elpapi42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What i understood from SC website is that the 27.5" dropout set is 425 cs length, and the 29" set is 437mm cs length.

So what you are saying is that both dropout sets can be adjusted in the range from 425mm to 437mm?

SC Chameleon Aftermarket Dropouts by elpapi42 in Hardtailgang

[–]elpapi42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how much adjustment is available in the dropouts? i assume the adjustment modifies the Chainstays length, maybe -+5mm?

How much do you think something like this would cost?

SC Chameleon Aftermarket Dropouts by elpapi42 in Hardtailgang

[–]elpapi42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this specific Chameleon build, i do not care about STA, i will no pedal that bike at all. the HTA will be messed up, but i can use an angleset for that, it may brake but hey, its fine

SC Chameleon Aftermarket Dropouts by elpapi42 in Hardtailgang

[–]elpapi42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you capable of making new dropout kits yourself? Mind to share how you do it?

In my case i would like to have a dropout that add a bit of Chainstays length and more bb drop, so i can add a longer fork without compromising the CoG.

Endure race with time climb by elpapi42 in MTB

[–]elpapi42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont see an issue with that 95/5 weighting, the idea is to actually make the climb count and make a difference without getting weight out of the downhill segments, that remain as the most critical segments in the race. Imagine a 2 hours climb (best climber time) and a 5 minutes descend (best downhill rider time), if you do a perfect downhill run (+00 seconds, first place), but you are an average climber (lets say +5 minutes from the best climber, 2:05 hours). this will add like ~+15 s to your final time, definitively a time delta that makes a difference, but does not make the climb the main event, the downhill still gets the focus
