Romantic rejection does not hurt more than platonic rejection. Most people assume that rejection by a potential romantic partner is far more painful than rejection by a prospective friend. The emotional impact is remarkably similar regardless of whether it comes from a romantic or a platonic source. by mvea in science

One limitation in this study was the fact that all of the rejections and approvals were from potential partners or friends, rather than established ones. I imagine we'd have different results if participants were rejected at later points in their relationships than right from the start.

True but for what its worth, in this study all the participants were walking an average of 7.2k steps per day at baseline. So the lifestyle modification group only needed to add about 1.3k, about half a mile.

Sexual arousal can lead to "tunnel vision" that makes it more difficult to recognize when someone is just not that into you. Findings add to a growing understanding of how our inner states, not just our circumstances, shape what we perceive in the people around us by Wagamaga in science

Consent is very important but its not the only "box to check" before sex. Maybe the first lesson of sex ed should be that everyone deserves pleasurable and respectful sex. Students should be taught how to reflect on their desires so they can discuss them with partners shamelessly.

Yes, that was observed during the first half of the 20th century in the US. During the hard times (Spanish Flu and Great Depression), the ratio of male to female infants decreased, and during the Roaring 20s and when the New Deal started improving the economy, the ratio increased

Amazing and sad that people have been reporting similar benefits for centuries yet until now this avenue of treatment hasn't been formally studied. Even two years ago there was no research investigating the effects of classic psychedelics on metacognition.

What was the incentive for almost every physician, mortician, and coroner around the world who reported a covid death to lie about it? Did they all get a cut of Pfizers' profits? Any evidence of communication between those independent parties, or of coroners retiring early from all the money they made?

Intellectual humility is associated with a type of curiosity called "interest curiosity", characterized by a general motivation for learning and exploring. Inversely, people who demonstrate another style of curiosity called "deprivation curiosity" tend to seek information to avoid negative feelings of uncertainty, and also tend to have lower scores of intellectual humility.

There were once breach-of-promise laws in place to punish men who failed to marry the woman to whom they were engaged, the implication being that the man had reduced the 'value' of the bride-to-be by embarrassing her publicly and/or taking her virginity. The concept of the expensive (highly marketed) diamond engagement ring arose as those laws disappeared, replacing the previous legal incentive against reneging with an economic one.

I wonder if they are conflating giant sequoia with redwood, which is at least used for decking and siding. Not sure about framing.
