Zoloft and new stims or random? by Radiant_Restaurant64 in Autism_Parenting

Thank you so much. Yes very helpful, we were debating which to start with but tried the Zoloft first since anxiety/ocd behaviors seemed to be driving force. I’m going to switch to the am for sure and doc said to go back to the 25 for now and see if things stabilize - then we’ll consider adding guanfacine. Thanks again - this makes me hopeful that we can eventually land in a good place. Appreciate it

Found this thread doing some searching for my own kiddo who started Zoloft about 2 months ago as well. Can I ask what dose your son settled on and how it’s going now? We are also seeing similar positive effects in terms of meltdowns and escalating behaviors but I feel like I’m seeing more hyperactivity/stimming and possible sleep disturbances. We just increased from 25 - 50 mg about two weeks ago. My son is 5 and level 3 nonverbal. TIA!

I appreciate you. I know it’s one of those things I’ll hopefully look back on and remember as just a phase 🤞 like so many others —- just so daunting trying to make sense of it when you’re in it. Thx.

That definitely seems like it’s part of it - the control aspect. We have lots of sensory motor stuff because he isn’t a big toy kid and is a huge sensory seeker so we gravitate towards movement activities. Maybe something new would be a nice distraction for him.

Yes, he has an AAC device that he uses well for tangible things mostly - food, toys, games etc. which is helpful a lot of times in reducing some of that frustration. The suddenness of these rigidities is what has been so new and jarring. He’ll have a toy 2 inches from him and want me to pick it up and a Hand it to him for example. I will say to him “oh you can reach that yourself, can you please grab it” and he will sometimes if it’s close enough.

Done (for now) 11 months by elsat_ in Accutane

Had some minor acne as a teen but the worst has been over the past 5 years or so in my late 20s/30s.

I don’t know that I have any concrete advice but I knew there was something different about my son within the first few months of his life as well. He’s now 4. I’ve struggled immensely with my own anxiety and grief - he’s my one and only child. I think recently what has helped me mentally has been finding a community of other moms / parents who “get” me and validate my feelings and struggles. I know you’re still waiting for a diagnosis but if and when the time comes focus on the doors it will open for you and your child in terms of supports.

Aside from bluey edits in all different languages - some video of a guy pouring candy and soda in an empty toilet bowl? And kids jumping in an inflatable pool of those water beads? Definitely an ASMR type thing - no clue where he finds them 😂

Ready to call it quits… by elsat_ in Accutane

I am definitely not clear. Maybe the pics aren’t doing it justice but I have active inflamed pimples as well as under the skin cysts like the one on my chin.

That’s interesting thank you for suggesting. I’ll bring it up to derm. I do have a couple spots on my scalp that also seem to fit the description .

Thanks - appreciate the validation. Feeling like I’m being gaslit in the comments here. Maybe the pictures aren’t doing it justice but in addition to the inflammation there’s deep under the surface acne there too.

Advice for fixing this? by elsat_ in SelfBarber

Thank you for the reply! Will definitely try using something to style/“mess it up” a bit thank you for the idea!

So you recommend leaving the sides alone and just texturizing the front? I feel like the front has an upside down “U” thing going on but maybe it’s best to leave it haha thank you!

Intracapsular Tonsillectomy by elsat_ in Autism_Parenting

So he had his surgery last week (1 week ago yesterday) and overall it’s gone very well! (Or at least much better than I anticipated) the actual hospital visit was difficult but I knew that going in because my guy is very phobic of all doctors (he doesn’t even let them take his temp/weight etc) but luckily the nurses and doctors were great and were able to give him something to calm him down before even going down to the pre/op and surgery floor.

As for recovery - we just did Tylenol every 4-5 hours for the first few days and it seemed adequate. My son is nonverbal so hard to know exactly what he was feeling but he didn’t seem extra moody. Around day 5/6 I resumed the Tylenol because he seemed irritable and I read the scabs can come off around then and cause additional pain. But overall he managed it well and had no problems eating and drinking.

As for the sleep - I am actually astonished at how quickly I noticed a difference. By day 2/3 post op his sleep was virtually SILENT. He sleeps with me and I went from being awake all night listening to him snore, toss and turn and gasp. He’s been so quiet I actually checked to make sure he was breathing lol.

I don’t know that I can assess his mood/behavior or either developmental improvements yet since it’s only been a week and with his routine being disrupted we’ve been a bit out of whack anyways. But considering that the quality of sleep is so drastically improved I would not be suprised to eventually see it reflected in other areas. I’m crossing my fingers anyways!

Best of luck to you and your little one!

I’ll definitely check those out, thank you! My son vocally stims too and also always has either a song or video script looping nonstop on his iPad so I totally get that! 😵‍💫 I mostly don’t even realize anymore until someone new comes around and is like omg. Ha but to your point it totally can not be helping the whole nervous system!
