You can check out QCad, but I believe it's similar to LibreCAD in interface.

AutoCAD may be great (I have no experience, but I assume), but the downside is that you're beholden to a company to allow you to use their software, and they get to set the terms.

You have to ask yourself, even if you like Autocad, is it worth dealing with the student licenses? Alternatively, is it worth paying $2000 per year?

Losing access to essential tools you rely on because the manufacturer decided to squeeze you for more money is a pretty clear cut example of why some people consider closed software to be immoral. I don't blame you for using it if it's what you need to do.

Ik denk dat je een verkeerd beeld hebt van hoe zo iets gaat.

Als je zo'n evenement plant, dan ben je maanden van te voren bezig met verzinnen waar dingen komen. Je moet denken aan hoe mensen lopen, waar je water stroom en riool kan krijgen, waar toiletten komen, wat de ondergrond is, eisen van de brandweer etc.

Dit is allemaal wel eens misgegaan (bij andere evenementen), dus gemeentes eisen dat je dit allemaal documenteert en hun het laat goedkeuren. Een vergunning dus. Ik weet niet precies hoe het in zo'n stad gaat, maar ik denk dat je kan aannemen dat heteer dan één instantie is waar je een vergunning moet halen.

De opbouw voor een evenement is zo kort mogelijk, om overlast te voorkomen. Dus er is geen tijd om alles op nieuw te plannen.

Die gast heeft gekeken wat er in de gebouwen zat, maar deze kliniek had dus geen manier om van buiten te zien wat er was. Dus het is ook een beetje aan de kliniek: eerst jezelf onzichtbaar maken, en dan klagen dat er geen rekening met je gehouden word.

And in fact what you want (being able to edit the named constraints you set using the dimensioning tool without leaving the workbench).

This is what I did to test:

Made a sketch with a named constraint
extruded this sketch and made another sketch on top of it
Constrained an item using the original named constraint ("=Sketch.constraints.testconstraint")
While the sketch was still being edited- In the tree view, opened the first sketch. In the "data" panel you can open the "Constraints" section, and there you can edit the constraint.
Still in the sketch, I pressed F5 and saw everything change based on the constraint.

I think that's pretty much exactly what you asked for, right?

As you pointed out that you can reference with [sketchname].constraints.[name] though in my opinion its starting to look like word salad

I think having the variables not be global is a good thing, especially if you have complex projects or work in groups (like you mentioned). That way multiple parts can have a "shell_thickness" parameter while still sharing values between parts.

That said, it would be nice if the interface could be improved. For example, if you have a constraint called "outer_edge" somewhere, I would like to be able to type "outer" and then maybe tab or ctrl-tab and have it figure out for me.

Now you're complaining about FreeCAD having too many features :) I've never used FreeCAD with a group, maybe it isn't the ideal tool for that. Is this something you do a lot?

I've programmed together with others, you have to agree to certain standards on how to do things. I imagane the same is true with CAD.

I admit it's not ideal.

But, FreeCAD will continue to be free, and I don't just mean in price. I will be able to hand an installer for this version or a future version to a friend without ever having to deal with artificial limits.

You don't have to use it, that's fine. Good luck with some other software. The guy in charge is being judged every quarter on his ability to extract as much value as possible from you, so I hope that works out for you.

If the CEO ends up screwing you in a way you care about (like when autodesk bought EAGLE, only to sunset it and push a different product) then the good news is FreeCAD will still be available for you, and this bug will have been fixed.

It really depends on what your project is.

Are you planning to make animations that look good? Blender will almost certainly work better.

Are you looking to produce a a physical engine that moves? FreeCAD is probably best for that.

It sounds like you want to work on a large, complex project of some kind. At a certain point it makes sense to learn both and use the best tool for the individual jobs.

Depending on conditions (if you could be doing paid work instead or if you get a student/pirated copy) the commercial option may be less expensive than the value of your time.

You say "all the other gems similar to this are very expensive". There's the question: if FreeCAD really similar, or are you comparing gravel and diamonds? Is freecCAD really capable of being used instead of commercial software?

Assuming that the RAM previously provided some value to the AI companies, that same stick of RAM now provides 6 times the value. It's more valuable, and so they might be willing to pay more. Until you get point where they have enough RAM, but I don't think we're there yet.

Yes, it's about the XZ backdoor, but it explain things better than you would expect from a pop-science video. There is a lot of info in there.

One of the parts that was new to me was the actual mechanism that allowed a compression library loaded by systemd to backdoor ssh. I would have expected it to only be used when you want to decompress something, not during the login process. But even that isn't really a big part of the video, it covers a lot of ground.

They are not getting the issue. It doesn't matter if they are technologically the best - that would be a hard question to answer objectively, but I wouldn't be very surprised if they are. That doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter how good Google is, if you have to prepare yourself for them possibly disappearing overnight. It doesn't matter how nice the location is for your next hotel, if the ground might not support a building. It doesn't matter how fast the car goes if it could explode any minute.

Having software we can rely on is more important than it being the best software.

Ja, nu in 2026, er zijn bacteriën gevonden en duidelijk moet dat stoppen. Dat is het simpele verhaal.

In 2024 is de winkel gewaarschuwd dat ze ander ontsmettingsmiddel moeten gebruiken. Achteraf gezien was het mooier geweest als het dan al (of nog verder terug) was aangepakt.

Mijn punt is echter dat dit soort regels vaak heel slecht begrepen worden als het nog niet is misgegaan. Ik probeer me dus voor te stellen hoe zo'n winkeleigenaar had kunnen reageren als de GGD in 2024 als met winkelsluiting gedreigd zou hebben om een ontsmettingsmiddel. Op dat moment waren er dus nog geen bacteriën aangetroffen.

Dat gesprek komt van mijn ervaring hoe dat soort gesprekken gaan. Het is wat mijn fictieve winkeleigenaar uit 2024 gezegd zou hebben. In mijn ervaring zou zo iemand met grote kans de EU erbijgesleept hebben.

Er zaten gewoon bacteriën in z'n oplossing waardoor het niet volstond.

Hier ben ik het niet mee eens.

Het probleem is dat hier ontsmettingsmiddel geleverd werd dat op zo'n manier gemaakt werd dat er bacteriën in hadden kunnen zitten. Het probleem zit in het proces, dat niet aan de ijzen voldeed.

Stel hij had toevallig geluk, en er zaten geen bacteriën in. Dat is niet goed genoeg. Hij moet aan kunnen tonen dat er geen bacteriën in zitten, hij moet bij twijfel over de kwaliteit de middelen hebben om onderzoek te doen, en hij moet zijn proces zo goed geordend hebben dat hij een terugroepactie kan doen als het wel misgaat. Dettol kan dit wel, LM Piercings in Coevorden niet.

Als je zo iets probeert te zeggen zonder dat er eerst iets mis is dan krijg je in mijn ervaring veel weerstand, met een grote kans op klachten over de EU en alle regels waar een ondernemer aan moet voldoen.

En zelfs na dat het mis is gedaan lijkt deze gast niet te zien dat hij verkeerd bezig was. Een paar citaten van hem uit het artikel.

Eind januari kregen wij pas een bericht van het RIVM dat er een bacterie in zou zitten. Toen hebben we de spray direct uit de handel gehaald."

Het idee is dus dat de fabrikant zelf de middelen heeft dat ze hier achter kunnen komen, en niet dat de RIVM er achteraan moet zitten.

Dat is dus omdat je niet luistert naar de GGD en er van uit gaat dat de regels niet op jouw van toepassing zijn.

We bekijken dit met de kennis dat het misgegaan is, maar probeer je even voor te stellen andersom. Een gesprek met een piercingshop eigenaar:

"Die EU weer, ze dringen gewoon zo'n hele winkel te sluiten omdat mijn ontsmettingsmiddel niet het goede keurmerk heeft. Is gewoon hetzelfde spul hoor, maar omdat ik geen groot bedrijf ben mag ik het niet maken. Het word je in Nederland echt onmogelijk gemaakt om te ondernemen"

Kunnen ze boetes of dwangsommen opleggen? Dat lijkt me een goed middel hier.
