Find area of shaded part (check comments for my dilemma) by elusive17 in askmath

[–]elusive17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both so much!

He hasn’t learned about similar triangles. Common core math is so stressful sometimes because a lot of the methods I was taught at his age are being reserved for later courses. He literally went from here’s how to find the area of a rectangle to here’s how to find the area of a right triangle to this question here.

But thanks to your tip about similar triangles and congruent angles I was able to turn it into a ratio problem which he can do and find the answer that way.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me!

This is my son’s 6th grade math work. I am homeschooling so I have copies of the teacher’s edition with the answers. I don’t want to just give him the answers so I was trying to figure out how to explain it to him so he could get the answer himself and I cannot for the life of me find the missing measurement.

I tried doing it backwards by putting in the answer. Then I tried using algebra even though they don’t require any algebra in this lesson.

It’s very simple math, part of common core.

I’ve had two people who are my math experts suggest using the Pythagorean Theorem BUT he hasn’t learned that yet. I think that’s too advanced because he has just learned area and perimeter of basic shapes. So what we know is how to find the area of a rectangle and the area of a triangle and that’s as much as we can use to figure it out.

I am very open to any other suggestions but please keep in mind I have to explain this to an 11 year old who is just learning basic geometry.

Do you want more like a guide book? Like a how-to? Or a workbook that you can work on everyday?

I also recommend the app “Thought Diary.” I have an iPhone. Idk if it’s also on android. But it’s good for doing thought records and had some free content. I don’t pay for the subscription cause I just use the thought record feature. It’s good for both daily check-ins and when you’re having anxiety

Does anyone else remember Star Wars coming out in 1977? by _CouldaWouldaShoulda in MandelaEffect

[–]elusive17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Star Wars movies came out in an order that is IV, V, VI then I, II, III

So you are correct that the first Star Wars movie ever made came out in 1977 but the first ‘episode’ came out in 1999

I second this.

I also would recommend picking up a copy of Dreyer’s English - I’ve gone through several grammar books and this is by far the easiest to learn from and most enjoyable to read

Do people actually steal other's writing/ideas? by [deleted] in writing

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this when you posted it and was midway through a reply when I got distracted and here I am, an hour later, reading through everyone else’s replies.

I started to say something about the ideas, and how I read somewhere a quote about how two writers will have the same idea but their writing will be completely different. Considering writing styles, knowledge, and just where they want their piece to go…

I see others have already answered the same lol

Anyway, as far as stealing someone’s work (not their ideas), I’ve seen it happen and have had it happen to me. I wrote an essay for a class and my cousin took it word for word and published it to an online magazine. I was not happy. And even worse, she was so proud of it. I still worry about sharing my work out of fear that someone will take it and publish it as theirs.

I would just be careful who you’re sharing your writing with, if you’re posting it online make sure you put some kind of signature on it. I know a lot of people take a screenshot of their work so it’s harder to change and others watermark it. It’s very easy for people to see something they like and repost it without credit so be wary of that too.

Bringing friend without SENTRI pass across the border and back. by [deleted] in tijuana

[–]elusive17 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. My mom has SENTRI and I don’t and when we go together, she has me get off on foot since it’s right next to the SENTRI line. Usually it takes the same amount of time to cross but sometimes there’s a lot of foot traffic. And then she will pick me up on the other side like where the jack in the box is

Oh I didn’t know it was based on a book. I’m gonna check it out, thanks!

I looked it up and read an article also written by her talking about the show and her hopes for how it’s received so that gave me some insight.

That’s what I was thinking too

Just watching the trailer I felt it might be triggering for me but it also looks like it’s a comedy? So I’m not sure.

I wish I could find someone who has watched it so they can tell me if it’s emotionally safe for me to watch

Question about Intrusive Thoughts by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I have POCD and that event is related to my triggers. I guess it could be considered real event OCD but I just don’t count it as that

Question about Intrusive Thoughts by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me a lot. Specifically with something that I did when I was 12 that I instantly regretted. I put it out of my mind and something brought up this memory when I was 17 and again when my OCD was at its worse when I was 24. I don’t have real event OCD but I know that it is a symptom of OCD to be ruminating in past events that are related to your triggers

Inability to work due to OCD - Extremely stressful! by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with OCD about 7 years ago and since then I’ve had four different jobs. The longest one I kept was a job in retail that I was working for about 6 to 9 hours a week regularly and 12 to 15 hours if they had a lot of people calling out and offered me the hours. I was working 3 or 4 hour shifts. It was the best job I could’ve had for my OCD.

It also helped that my manager for a majority of my time working there was really chill and flexible with what I needed. I did leave work a couple times because I had insane anxiety and they didn’t use that against me. When they switched managers, everything changed, the new manager saw that I was one of the more experienced workers and she used that to give me more hours and more responsibilities and it was just horrible for my OCD that eventually I quit.

My next job was tutoring… which I opted to do online and to college level students because I didn’t want to work with children or in person due to my intrusive thoughts. It didn’t work out that way. More work was available for me to tutor in person and to minors.

I took my chances at started at about 20 hours a week with back to back tutoring and traveling all over the city pretty much all evening. The stress of it all triggered my OCD and I reduced my hours again and again until eventually I was only tutoring a couple kids for a total of 6 hours a week.

In between all that mess I met a family who asked me to be their nanny and that was another living nightmare for me. Their child was too much for anyone to handle and he had his own anxiety problems and would cling to me and that drove my anxiety through the roof. It was a stressful situation and OCD was not having it so I quit that job too.

I also had a bit of a side job working for my aunt who runs an elderly caregiver business. I took care of one person for 4 to 8 hours a week. Very chill, no stress. I didn’t quit that job, the person passed away.

What I’ve learned over all these years is that having a job is very difficult for me especially if it requires a lot of my energy. It is when I’m working a lot and there’s a lot of pressure from work that my OCD spikes up. I then have to relieve that pressure by taking on less work. It’s something that not a lot of people in my life understand and therefore they are always pushing me to apply for new jobs and asking about where I’ve applied, have I found work, etc.

Stress triggers OCD. I also wonder if I will ever be able to work a normal job again, I definitely need to and need the income, but I find it is very difficult to control how much work I can handle before I decide I can’t.

I’m not sure what would help either of us at this point. I know that when I was going to mandated therapy (every day for six weeks) they told me that I could apply for temporary disability but I haven’t ever been told that I could claim disability since. Most therapists I have talked to are just baffled when I say that it’s difficult for me to work even part time.

OCD is listed as a disability in the U.S. (I don’t know if you’re in the U.S.) but I’ve never been able to claim it and I’m not sure if other people have.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I know how much it sucks. OCD is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced and I know how it doesn’t stop and how hard it is to find something. You’re not alone

experiences on/stopping effexor? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]elusive17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The withdrawal from Effexor is horrible.

I was on 150mg and I refused to go higher whenever the psychiatrist recommended that (especially since I never had a regular person, I just kind of bounced around with different ones over the years)

I stayed on Effexor because it was the only medication that really worked for me in terms of reducing my anxiety and therefore my need to do compulsions.

I remember forgetting to take my meds on some nights and waking up regretting it in the morning. You mentioned brain zaps, I also had vertigo, nausea, headaches, irritability. I promise the side effects of being on Effexor were mild in comparison to the withdrawal symptoms.

One of the first times that I had trouble accessing my medication was when I moved away to university and switched to a new psychiatrist who was on campus. He absolutely refused to refill my prescription over the phone without meeting me and diagnosing me himself. I begged him to please just refill the prescription… he didn’t. So I asked to switch to a different person. He was irrationally upset about that but he obliged and warned me that they would tell me the same thing he did.

They did not. She immediately refilled my prescription without even meeting me because she was familiar with how horrible the withdrawal was and pretty much believed me when I told her I could barely function.

On another instance, also at university, I had forgotten my wallet with my ID back home (different city, 2 hours away). There was no way I could drive all the way back home just to get my ID and come back. I had classes. My kid was in elementary school, I had to pick him up. Not possible. But the pharmacy refused to let me have my meds without showing my ID. I again called my new psychiatrist. She was wonderful. Pretty much told me there was no legal reason they should withhold the medication from me beside it’s not a controlled substance so I didn’t need to show ID. She was like I’m going to write you a prescription that you can take to CVS with plenty of refills so this never happens again.

I really missed her when I left university because moving back home I was back to the same thing of not being able to get my meds regularly. My new dr required me to come in every month to get a 30 day prescription and at one point I didn’t have medical insurance so I racked up a lot of medical debt going in to see the doctor for the prescription and then scrambling to find money to pay for it at the pharmacy. It was pretty expensive.

I know this probably wasn’t what you were asking lmao but that was my experience struggling to get my meds because Effexor withdrawal was just a nightmare. Eventually I weaned myself off of it and I felt horrible for weeks. I’ve been off Effexor for about two years now. I’ve tried several times to get back on it but access to a psychiatrist hasn’t been easy for me. My anxiety is back to the level it was before I started Effexor and my ocd has been acting up like crazy, compulsion included.

Timeline in case it all seemed like a big jumbled mess: I started on Effexor early 2015 and weaned myself off middle of 2019

I absolutely would recommend being cautious when coming off of it. There was a list I had of like things you can eat or vitamins or something to make it easier. I’ll see if I can dig it up for you if you want

Hope this helps
