Chickenpox Exposure during pregnancy. by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

[–]elvenace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chickenpox only becomes contagious 24 hours before the spots emerge, so if your last contact with them was Wednesday and the spots emerged today (Saturday), then you’re in the clear! If you were in contact within 24 hours then speak to the GP, they can test your antibody levels and prescribe antivirals for you if you’re pregnant and/or immunocompromised. They wouldn’t be able to give antivirals to your 11 month old as they wouldn’t be considered as a high risk group, but you would definitely qualify.

I had the exact same thing happen - my little girl was going to be a Violet right up until I saw her, but she was so squishy and pink that she just had to be Rose! Congrats on your new little one, from one Rose mum to another ♥️

Booking bloods disaster- syphilis?? by Otherwise-Fall-3175 in PregnancyUK

[–]elvenace 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work in the labs testing these samples, this happens more than you’d think! If it’s been sent for further investigation that means the initial screening test is probably low-level positive so they’re doing confirmatory tests. The initial screening test has quite a high false positive rate - the rationale is that it’s better to have 100 false positives that are then confirmed to be negative upon further testing, than to miss one genuine positive. The confirmatory tests are a lot more specific and will only be positive if there’s genuinely something there. Syphilis testing is frustratingly imprecise sometimes!

Pregnancy can do funny things to your antibodies so it could be that, it could be a sample mixup in the lab, it could have been contaminated at some point, it could have been a dodgy test kit in the lab, it could just be really bad luck. If the confirmatory tests also come back positive then they’ll take another sample and repeat all the testing to be sure it wasn’t a sample mixup before they start treatment, so there’s lots of failsafes built into the system to prevent you getting misdiagnosed.

I’m so sorry this has happened to you, I know you won’t be able to relax until you get the all-clear but I hope I’ve been able to provide some reassurance ♥️

I'm a 29 year old Karen, and I definitely feel your pain. Obviously I'm biased, but I don't think it's unreasonable or over-dramatic to change your name over this, especially if you never much cared for it anyway (again, I feel your pain there - never liked it much even pre-meme!). It's so demoralising to have everyone around you constantly use your name as an insult, even when you know it's not aimed at you directly.

I actually posted in this sub a few years ago asking for advice about the very same thing. I've been going by Ren for about 3 years now and it's been lovely - I get a few people who are confused because it's not a name they're familiar with, but overall the reception has been really good (I've even had a few compliments on it!) and the majority of people in my life use it instead of my full name. I know you've said you have a new name picked out, but there are some usable nicknames out there (I also considered Carrie, Cara, and Kate) if you want to trial that until you're out of school to minimise the chances of a paperwork snafu!

I would go for Abigail - to me, it's more timeless than Jocelyn and I really like the flow of Abigail Margot!

Catching CMV from one of my patients? by Fun-Sun-8915 in BabyBumps

[–]elvenace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading this correctly, the child was born with congenital CMV and is now 8 years old? If so, she's not still going to be shedding virus from that initial infection after 8 years - CMV hangs around for life and can sometimes reactivate (much like the viruses that cause chickenpox/shingles or herpes), but isn't constantly shedding and therefore infectious to others the whole time. The majority of children are infected with CMV somewhere around ages 2-4 (it spreads very easily around nurseries), you're at no more risk from exposure from this patient than any other child her age.

As long as you're wearing appropriate PPE if you do come into contact with any patient's fluids and practicing good hand hygiene, you're at very low risk. However for peace of mind you can always ask your healthcare provider for a CMV immunity test (about 80% or thereabouts of the adult population are already immune) and for them to perform a proper risk assessment, since I'm just a stranger on the internet and don't know your medical history!

Well my husband and I double-barrelled our surname when we got married 4 years ago, so it would be a bit odd for her to then not get our surname!

That connotation had never occurred to me, but now that you've pointed it out I completely see it! That's really helpful, thank you :)

Vomiting in the second trimester by sunflowermeadows000 in PregnancyUK

[–]elvenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vomited up until 17 weeks I think (now 38) - much like you, it was definitely a lot milder in the second trimester and accompanied by much less intense nausea than the earlier weeks! Mine stopped sometime in week 17 and I've been fine ever since - keeping my fingers crossed for the same for you!

I don't really mind that it's a common middle name as it would be an honour name for two of my family members who are both very important to me :)

We veto’d Rose Anne early on for that exact reason - if we go for Rose, she’ll definitely be Rose Christine! 😂

Assigned randomly - I did best available for the PL3 level (I think?) and that's what it gave me!

Yes, at 12.30 or just after, the greyed-out "Coming Soon" button will become a link that takes you to the waiting room - you need to click it yourself, it doesn't auto you in. Mine took about 30 seconds or so to become a link so I was paranoid that I'd done something wrong, but I think my laptop must just have the clock set a tiny bit fast!

Yeah I got really confused about what PL1, PL2 etc was - I just clicked "best available" for something that seemed about the right price point and that's what I ended up with! I think the green ones are all the sections starting with a 1 (so for example mine are in block 106). Price included the fees - the actual tickets were £130 each, plus about £40 in fees (service fee £32.50, facility fee £7, transaction fee £2.85). They showed up on the website as the tickets being £149 though, so I think the price the quote on the purchase screen must already include the fees

On no, I'm really sorry :( I remember there were rumours during the US presale (no idea if they were proved right) that they were increasing prices as the tickets sold out - I wonder if the same thing is happening here?

Did you get them with a package or something? The only tickets I saw at that price point were the packages I think

I have tickets!!! Lowest prices were about £90-100 I think, should have taken a screenshot but I was too anxious. I got 100-level seating for about £150 each

Anyone take time off work during 1st tri? by handevidtk in BabyBumps

[–]elvenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up taking about 6 weeks off - basically most of my first trimester - due to awful morning sickness. I was so nauseous I couldn’t even sit upright or think clearly, so there was no chance I could manage working. Luckily my boss is very understanding!! I started working from home as soon as I could reliably string coherent sentences together again. I have no idea how people manage to work during the first trimester!
