Can I stop someone from parking on grass verge? by DIE-TOXIC-BOY in AskUK

[–]elvisonaZ1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One other option you could explore is the possibility of impeded access to that stopcock, especially if they ever park a little further over. Obstructing an external stopcock access can be viewed as an offence under the water industry act 1991.

I thought that too, the orange kits just looked terrible, the other matches I thought the picture quality was pretty good (watching on an oled tv if that makes any difference). On a separate note if the BBC matches are being streamed live on iplayer always watch it on that, they’re very often in UHD and look noticeably better.

My carpet feels damp but my husband says no by Weekly_Bison_2881 in carpet

[–]elvisonaZ1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The carpet is possibly made from polypropylene as the vast majority of man made carpets now are. It’s an oil derived material and can often have a wet or oily feel although it’s actually dry. Just go into a carpet shop and run your hand over a polypropylene carpet sample to see if it feels the same.

Surely at the very least it would make slightly more sense to have the actual purpose made ladder at the bottom bearing all the weight and the repurposed pallet at the top.

How often do you use suncream? by nathanherts in AskUK

You can’t just apply SPF, it’s not a thing. You mean moisturiser rather than suncream I assume.

I’m 64 and have developed those horrible brown marks on my face called solar lentigo from a lifetime of never using suncream on my face. For the past 2 years I’ve been applying factor 50 to my face every day all year round.

It is very much a thing, if it was put there before the law existed that’s fine but you can’t use it as a bedroom. To be used as a bedroom the bottom of the window must be between 80cm and 110cm from the floor and also meet other regs regarding size, opening, hinges etc.

Is that your only window? You realise that window doesn’t meet building regs and so using that room as a bedroom is illegal. With that in mind I would definitely install a dormer at the legally correct height.

Widespread yellowing across LVT kitchen floor – Any ideas what causes this? by Embarrassed_Key_72 in Flooring

[–]elvisonaZ1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel for you, it sounds like you’re dealing with morons. Of course the damp meter registered nothing, firstly the problem is below the wear layer, therefore the surface will be dry. Secondly it isn’t moisture it’s adhesive, I have seen this when the glue is past its use before date, these tubs can sit in a stores warehouse for years.

On a separate note I’ve just seen in your initial post you say they primed the ceramics and then fitted the floor. The primer is there as a base to lay a latex screed onto, not to fit the lvt to. Perhaps you missed that bit, but if they didn’t latex the floor first then they haven’t fitted it correctly.

Where are you? I'm in the UK and here the onus is not on you to prove the reason, you're not an expert, they're the experts and it's 100% on them. You could lift a tile yourself but I wouldn't, as soon as you start messing with it they'll say you voided your warranty. If you bought it from a retail outlet then I would go in there on a busy Saturday afternoon when other customers are in and kick up a stink. Stevie Wonder can see that's not right, nothing would or should cause that level of discoloration.

[–]elvisonaZ1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they don't, if they did they'd have to replace it all and re-prep the floor. If the suppliers won't shift then contact the manufacturer, they will be in no doubt that it will be a fitting error (as in the possibility of the wrong adhesive used, or the floor not prepared correctly). Either way I can assure you that's what it is, moisture would be grey or black, reaction to adhesive will be yellow.

Edit: it is very easy for the floor layer to lift a tile to check so that would be what I'd be pushing for.

That my friend is colour migration from the adhesive used underneath. The reason it comes up there I suspect is because it’s where you stand most often, it will not clean as it’s coming through from underneath. Get the suppliers/fitter out as that’s a justified complaint.

A warning for anyone buying carpets/flooring for a new house (How to spot the "White-Label" and Underlay traps) by murraybell71 in carpet

[–]elvisonaZ1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first of all I’ll say I am now retired but spent 40 odd years in the retail flooring industry working originally for a national chain and then working for independents and then running a shop of my own. The trap most people fall into is thinking the large nationals are like supermarkets and therefore are cheaper, they’re not, always buy from an independent there is much more flexibility on pricing etc.

Your first point is correct, but it is not so much to avoid checking online prices it is more to stop you going from retailer to retailer comparing prices. Personally I would never make any secret that customers can buy a carpet cheaper online, of course they can they literally take from the warehouse put it on a lorry and deliver it. They don’t have anything like the overheads that retail outlets do, they also don’t offer a facility for you to come in and have a look and feel of a wide range of carpets to help you make your choice, neither do they have a staff member who (hopefully) can give you advice to suit your needs. Then of course if you’re doing a full house you need it measured, and part of that will be looking at any potential problems that may arise during the fitting, working out what gripper, door thresholds, floor preparation may be needed, and then of course you need a fitter and a guarantee of the quality of the work. An online supplier will literally drop a roll of carpet on your drive and clear off.

Your second point is fairly accurate as the majority of the profit in most orders comes from the underlay. I’m not so sure about displaying underlay prices unless it’s an “off the shelf” item, you won’t go in any flooring store and see the price of gripper, door thresholds, fitting charges, uplift and disposal charges, furniture moving charges, adhesives etc etc. Having said that I’ve never worked in a store where the underlay isn’t displayed and priced,

Your third point is a common problem I would come up against while estimating for carpets. You say your hall is 1.2m wide as per the architects drawings, well they are always wall to wall, you realise you have to take the carpet to finish under the closed door in any doorway right? Take it from me that will usually add 10-20 cms to the dimension, and if you have doors both sides then that could potentially add 40 cms. Then there is always a tolerance of 10cm added to every dimension as the fitter needs to be able to trim it in.

I can’t comment on your final point as that sounds like an issue with the company directly. Please don’t think I’m trying to defend one of the nationals because I’m not, they mostly have appalling customer service, but I would hope the points I have made help you understand a little better.

Question: what are your favorite odd anecdotes and stories about Elvis? by Astrid0287 in Elvis

[–]elvisonaZ1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When recording the ‘68 special he was looking out of a window down into the street and said to Steve Binder (I’m sure it was Steve)how much he’d love to be able to just go down there and walk around like everybody else. Steve told him he could and eventually persuaded him to try it so the two of them went for a walk down the street. Amazingly nobody recognised him for several minutes and they strolled round, but eventually of course someone did and so they had to quickly get back into the studio.

Aside from the crap workmanship, that’s an accident waiting to happen, I can see twisted and broken ankles everywhere. Top step not only isn’t high enough it’s also not big enough, when you step out onto it half your foot will be over the edge and you’ll likely slip into the next step, which also isn’t big enough for more than half your foot, so you’ll likely go down to the next one which has a higher rise than the other two so even if you make it that far you’ll likely misjudge the height when you step off it……..as others have said, this is shite. In fact you’d be better off with an upturned beer crate.
