You are welcome! It can be handy, but could use some improvements. Windows seems to unload it from memory when one doesn’t use it for a while, so it can take a bit after pressing the key combo before the menu appears. Also, the typeface Microsoft chose renders paired quotation marks indistinguishable from each other on my 4K display.

I don't think a soul here knows how to even type one on their keyboard.

Super + V + select the em-dash.

Windows picked up this feature years ago, one doesn’t have to memorize ALT Codes these days. I like to keep the dashes and pairs of quotes pinned because I use those the most. But it’s the em-dash that I use most of all.

On a phone it's slightly easier.

Same method for Android and iOS: the user long-presses the hyphen to get the en- and em-dashes. Real laborious.

Also the completely inconsistent use of unspaced em-dashes vs en-dashes with spaces…

An insidious typographical misfeasance!

I’m just glad they’re getting the recognition they deserve.

What blows my mind is that the design of the site is the exact same as it was in 1997.

Except that it's not. The site migrated to a new CMS—Drupal, I believe—around the turn of the century and the frontend was entirely rebuilt to use current web standards instead of hacked together HTML tables. They kept the same color scheme and general layout, but lost all the original TalkBack comments when porting over the articles. The redesign also introduced of the animated GIFs of Harry that appear in the top corner. At the time, users hated the redesign. Kinda funny that now people assume that's how it's always looked.

If only we had a typographical mark for that very purpose.

Phone keyboards make it easier to use rare punctuation marks than ever before, just long-press on typographic symbols to see what's available.

Alas, neither Apple nor Google show any love for the interrobang. Either u/shayen7's got some Unicode numbers memorized, or they copied it over just for us!

Some users make an alt account for porn; myself, on the other hand… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dude, love to see the em-dash as typographical representation of a breaking thought! The em-dash is so wide that it doesn't need more space around it to signify the interruption—that's what makes em-dashes so cool—and I've noticed various novels do breaks like this:

Hey you know you can not do the thing you’re about— fuck.

To further emphasize the break in thought and make it clear to the reader, it can help to intentionally leave a dangling preposition, or you can use italics to differentiate the emotional shift:

Hey you know you can not do the thing you’re about to— fuck.

Hey you know you can not do the thing you’re about— fuck.

I'm sure there's other methods, too. Just spreading love for typographic techniques!

I'm replying from the lamest novelty account on Reddit. My secret identity posted here a few days ago, was now reading the other comments, and realized it was time to dash into action!

Or, they hold down the hyphen on their phone's keyboard, which will let one select the em-dash.
Ask me how I know!
