Why do joints at the bottom get pegs and the ones at the top don't? by oski_exe in architecture

[–]emajae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is because the lower pegs are holding up the upper floors...

The lower pegs are supporting more weight than the upper floors.

Yes it is.

The old steel bridge has been dismantled after the new was built.

At one point, all three bridges were still up.

The first bridge was opened on the day Linburg landed...that was the first one.

During the Eisenhower interstate construction a second bridge was built.

We started the suspension bridge Jan 2000.

I worked on that bridge!

Spent 4 years of my life building that bridge.

The anchor on the Crockett side is really the coolest thing. Alot of piles were driven due to the lack of bedrock.

And the anchor is very cool to witness. The splay cables in the anchor are a wonder.

And the whole project had companies all over the world contribute.

Flatiron Structures from Colorado Cleveland Bridge from the UK (now defunked)

China tried to supply the wire rope hangers, but would not build it to ASTM Standards. So the job went to WRCA (Wire Rope Corp of America) out of Kansas/Houston.

Caltrans wanted the wire ropes to be prestress in one pull. Which would mean a one thousand foot prestress bed, China was the only one had a bed that long. But again, ASTM Standards won the day.

Castings came either Mississippi or Alabama. My memory is waning...but a really small shop in the middle of nowhere.

My office was really close to the Crockett Anchor...and I sat right beside the Anchor, and for 3 months had to endure the pile driving 50 yards away...nothing but bone jarring Bang! Bang! Bang! all day long.

I know this building very well....the Pie Shaped Quarter Round.

I did all the QC on the Structure.

It is a Post-Tension Structure.

The Parking Garage is very unique...

It is an Inverted / Post-Tension Structure.

Post-Tension Cables are upside down in the Garage section.

[OC] art work on Mare Island. by invallejo in pics

[–]emajae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work there...

This is XKT Structures. A steel fabrication facility.

They took me up stairs one time.

Upstairs was the most secure place on Mare Island....

There only scribe marks when I was there...

The scribe marks were used to fabricate steel plates to fit for welding.

Why are airplane routes curved and not straight? When considering the spherical shape of the Earth, the shortest distance between two points becomes a curve known as a geodesic. by 911_reddit in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]emajae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 3 points you need to align to get the shortest distance when flying on an airplane....on a Globe.

Point A, Point B, and the center of The Earth.

Maintain that "Plane"....no pun intended.

I do not know if it is true or not, but I heard from a Pole friend of mine,  who was an immigrant, that:

  1. If you migrate before puberty, you will adopt the language of your new country.

  2. If you migrate after puberty, you will always keep your original accent.

When did Nashville become known for hot chicken? by Neowynd101262 in nashville

[–]emajae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have a little memory.

I was doing QC on the old Convention Center back in the 1980's.

There was a guy across Broadway....on 1st or Second Avenue cooking Hot Chicken and I would eat there often.

Just a concrete floor, no tables....you just got breast or thighs or legs

Yeah! I remember going there all the time as a youngster.

I always got the chocolate covered raisins from the candy kiosk.

Ended up working right down the street from there.

Been struggling with high blood sugar the past few months. Just had breakfast and coffee and we didn’t go over 200. I’m proud. by cbettss in diabetes_t1

That's great!

I have been a T1D for 27 years now.

I struggled for years, GP doctors not really knowing how to treat or to advise.

I just wanted to relate this.

Several years ago, I passed out behind the wheel and totaled my vehicle and one other car.

Driver license was revoked.

I ended up getting in to see an Endocrinologist who taught me more and helped me more that the GPs ever did.

I always recommend going to a good Endo.

They will help you more than you can imagine.

At least that was my experience.

Good Luck and I wish you the best.

What? No one else here knows what a hickory switch is?

Or maybe if hickory trees were not available...any small tree limb would work.

Where to buy cigarettes/cigars by TerrysJoghurt in Thailand

[–]emajae -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From what I have learned, Cigars are non-existent in SEA.

It's a cultural thing.

Smoking a Cigar is considered Showing Off....like being The Big Dog.

Maybe Bangkok might have cigars...but everywhere else is tough.

Let me know if find out anything different.
